"His death followed a long illness." This may not get quite as much press nationally as it did in the Bay Area, and I thought the people here would like to know. Anyone who ever saw Lucy and her Dad perform together, like they always did when she played Berkeley, will have a special feeling of loss. Here's a link to a rather lengthy article by The Chronicle's science editor: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/07/02/BAGD5JO39U1.DTL&h w=kaplansky&sn=001&sc=1000 ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Jul 2006 10:42:50 -0700 From: "Susan Krauss" Subject: RE: [lucy-list] Irving Kaplansky, 1917-2006 Lucy sent a note to her web site subscribers that Irving died last Sunday and I was surprised that there were no articles/obituaries until now. The Chronicle article is nice - and shows his sweetness. If the link below doesn't work (as it's broken over two lines and requires two cut & pastes, go to http://www.sfgate.com and search on Kaplansky or go to: http://shorl.com/stat.php?id=geligufrenoky&pwd=dafryvebragaprote May his memory be for a blessing. susan - -----Original Message----- From: owner-lucy-list@smoe.org [mailto:owner-lucy-list@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Robert Phelps Sent: Sunday, July 02, 2006 9:11 AM According to today's San Francisco Chronicle: "Irving 'Kap' Kaplansky, one of the nation's most distinguished and beloved mathematicians, who for many years ran a kind of Mount Olympus for mathematicians in the Berkeley Hills, died June 25 in Sherman Oaks at age 89.
