Not only were the fans a bit older (of course, I was too) but I got a cushier volunteer job than working in the hyperactive concession stand. The Cedar is the only place in town Lucys ever played, in my memory and she commented that the place does have a special affinity for her. My tasks were helping with the set up portion of the show as well as tearing tickets. We packed-in as many chairs as possible, but they were not all needed. Of the 460 or so chairs that we put-up, Id say about twenty went unfilled. I dont know what Id rather have: a few seats left over or people turned away at the door, as has happened with her shows here before. (Boy, did I feel sorry for THEM!) She commented from the stage that she had been interviewed that morning on our spanking new non-commercial (and undeniably hip) radio station which was recently added to Minnesota Public Radios previous dual line-up of all-classical and all-news and information stations to make a really versatile power trio of stations that blanket our state and even drift across the border into neighboring states.but I digress! Lucy played aloneno warm-up act, no guest artists joining her. She was looking very good and sported a pale green short-sleeve shirt and blue jeans. She said that being the mother of a small child is her ticket to keeping trim. She also said that, silly as it may sound, all the clichis about motherhood are true. An interesting story about Molly was told. Apparently Molly really enjoys having music on around her at all timeseven while multitaskingand one particular album has a particularly prominent (read that annoying) place. The album that is played over and over and over again in the Litvin-Kaplansky home and car is The Red Thread. Lucy used to like The Red Thread she related, but after 7,000 playings, she has had enough of it. It could be worse, she continued. It could have been The Wiggles. One day, in a fit of desperation, Lucy told of how she tried to slip another of her albums, Ten Year Night into the CD player just for a break. It just didnt cut it and Molly burst into tears. When Lucy pleaded with her, But this IS mommy, Molly blurted out, DIFFERENT mommy!. Yah, kids say the darndest things! The playlist was as follows: FIRST SET 1) Oh Lord, Ive Made You a Place in My Heart (as it was the night before Easter!) 2) Written on the Back of His Hand 3) I Had Something 4) Love Story New York 5) Ten Year Night (I guess just a couple months back it was the TWENTIETH anniversary of that night 6) God Will (Lyle Lovett) This was great! A sorta He Thinks I Still Care vibe 7) The Red Tread (and the DIFFERENT mommy story) 8) Dont Mind Me 9) New Song (tentatively called Goodnight Moon) 10) A Wilco song (If Its Just Your Body Talking) (Lucy was tuned to that new, aforementioned Minnesota Public Radio station on the drive up through southern Minnesota that morning and heard Wilco. It inspired her to pull this one out of the airshe wasnt sure if shed ever performed it before.) 11) Brooklyn Train (again on piano) 12) Flesh and Bone SECOND SET 1) Scopion 2) Mary Magdelene 3) Line in the Sand 4) Ring of Fire 5) This is Home 6) Hot Burrito #2 (on piano) She said she really should record this someday and I agree! 7) A Song About Pi (there were two mathematicians in the audience, one a former student of her dad!) 8) Turn the Lights Back On 9) Whats So Funny Bout Peace, Love & Understanding 10) Broken Things Encore: Guinevere Encore: Song For Molly Long show. Two-and-a-half hours from start to finish. Shes becoming the Bruce Springsteen of folk. Pretty soon, fans will be chanting Loooose! Loooose! I spoke with Bob Feldman, president of Red House Records, who confirmed what we have been suspecting all along: That Lucy has been too pre-occupied with motherhood to be building up a repertoire of new songs. He DID mention, however, that Red House was planning on re-issuing The Tide in a couple of months, probably with a couple of additioanl songs on it. I figure that counts as news on this list. For those of you out there who don't already own "The Tide", hang on a couple of months. Thats all from the northland. Spring is springing in a big way today!
