It describes a show in Cleveland on Saturday night, February 5. To put it in time context, it was the weekend after the election in Iraq, and the evening before the Super Bowl. I wrote most of this on February 6, then started a new work project the following day (complete with trip to Paducah(!!)) and didn't get to finish 'til now. Phil - -------- Saw Lucy at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland on February 5--she performed solo for over two hours! There was no introduction--Lucy just walked on stage, said "Okay", and started playing. Lucy said she was happy to be "back in this cold place." Nevertheless, she was wearing a sleeveless top and blue jeans with a (naturally occurring, she told her audience of 150) hole over her knee. I don't remember all the songs Lucy performed, or in what order. "More Than This" was first; followed by two other sad (Lucy's term) songs. She invited requests really early--there were lots and she played as many as she could. She also did "God Will" by Lyle Lovett (which I don't think I'd heard before) and "Ring of Fire" by June Carter Cash. Has Lucy ever invited the audience to sing along--she did on this song. After checking that the crowd didn't have much interest in the Superbowl, (Have the Browns ever been in the Superbowl?) Lucy admitted to being interested for two reasons: (1) Rick is originally from Philadelphia and his family was all excited; and (2) Lucy was looking forward to Paul McCartney's halftime show. There was also the new song with the working title, "Goodnight Moon." It's about the moon being Molly's new friend and how when the moon isn't over Molly's half of the sky it's over the other half, where Molly is from. There was the Daisann McLane song, "Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained" complete with story (even in Cleveland!) about Benay, the "intrepid" fan from Brooklyn who found Daisann in the phone book. Although Lucy kept expressing doubt that the crowd would be interested in Molly stories, she told two--that at a Greenwich Village playground Dr. Ruth Westheimer told Lucy her daughter is adorable; and that the actor, Benjamin Bratt, (Lucy said the women would really appreciate this.) complimented Molly at the pediatrician's office. There was no "A Song About Pi" nor "Land of the Living". But there was a fresh and new (to my ear) version of "The Tide". The encore songs were "Guinevere" and "By Way of Sorrow", inspired by the success of the Iraq election. Lucy said that despite what she thinks about the administration in Washington (on which she did not elaborate) it was encouraging that so many Iraqis came out to vote. Last year Lucy and Rick traveled with Molly by car to Cleveland. Lucy said it's harder to travel with a two-year-old. She had traveled by herself and was looking forward to an early flight home the next morning. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Feb 2005 18:57:24 -0500 From: Paul Rafanello Subject: RE: [lucy-list] Cleveland Great review Phil!
