Well, I always DID want the Lucy-list to be active, but this was not exactly what I meant. I have an aunt whose opinions in the realm of politics are the absolute opposite of mine (we won't get into who's on which side, but those of you who know me can guess). Anyway, this aunt of mine will turn a conversation to politics whenever she gets the opportunity, even if it's in a subtle way. I think she's totally wrong, and sometimes I try to gently say so. Other times, I just have to keep my mouth shut, even if that means literally biting my tongue. But her opinions are always right out there in front of me. The other thing about my aunt, though, is that she is incredibly good at things I've never considered myself good at doing---cooking, baking, knitting, etc. She always has some delicious creation in the oven and a complex project on her knitting needles. When I visit, she serves up delicious food for every meal, and sometimes at Christmas she'll give me a gorgeous knitted sweater. By some of the logic that has been used on this list lately, I should refuse to eat my aunt's food or wear the sweaters she made me. After all, that would be supporting someone with whom I disagree vehemently----and people might think I agree with her if I allow her influence in my life! But the thing is...I'm hungry when I visit my aunt, and the food is there and it's delicious. And it's cold in my apartment now---they haven't turned the heat on yet---and the only sweater that goes with what I'm wearing is one that my aunt made me. If I won't accept the things my aunt offers me, there will always be someone else who will eat the food and wear the sweaters...so it won't matter that much to my aunt. But me? If I don't eat the food or wear the sweaters,I'm not going to be changing my aunt's political opinions or convincing her not to tell them to me. I'm just going to be hungry and cold.
