Perhaps this, from an article about NYC arrests of Bush protesters in last Friday's Washington Post, explains in part why the lucy-list has become so quiet: "Several dozen of those detained said that they had not taken part in protests. Police apparently swept up the CEO of a puppet theater as he and a friend walked out of the subway to celebrate his birthday. Two middle-age women who had been shopping at the Gap were handcuffed, and a young woman was arrested as she returned from her job at a New York publishing house." [excerpted from http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A57531-2004Sep2.html] Even if there's no Lucy news, I'm sure listers would be interested in posts by the New Yorkers on the list about their reactions to the convention last week. Did anyone see Lucy in Bridgeport on Saturday? Phil ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Sep 2004 11:43:05 -0400 From: Benay Bubar Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy in Bridgeport 9/4 Nope, it wasn't me who got arrested during the RNC...though I might've liked to claim it was. Much as I admired the protesters, as it happened I was among those who left town while my city was being taken over...returning just in time to join Kristen, Donna, and Bruce in seeing Lucy at the Acoustic Cafe in Bridgeport Saturday night. Set list: Lord, I Have Made You a Place in My Heart I Had Something More Than This End of the Day Ten Year Night Nothing Ventured, Nothing Gained (apparently from some years ago and NOT written by Lucy, and lovely...don't know much more about it) The Red Thread Love Song/New York Don't Mind Me What's So Funny About Peace, Love, and Understanding? (had never before seen Lucy attack the guitar quite so energetically as on this one...I wouldn't have been surprised had ALL the strings broken at once, but luckily none did) Brooklyn Train (on keyboard) Ballad of Mary Magdalene (by request) Line in the Sand Ring of Fire This Is Home Written on the Back of His Hand (Lucy was tired enough by this point that she actually forgot the first line, but Kristen and Donna and I fed it to her in chorus) The Heart (by request---she hadn't sung it in ages and was thrilled that she remembered the whole thing, as were we since we couldn't necessarily have helped much---I'd never heard it live before) Guinevere Encore: The Tide Encore: My Name Joe Lucy sang much more than she talked in this show, but she did mention a couple of Molly milestones, both apparently reached that day: Molly told someone her name for the first time, and she said to her doll, "Wake up!" (Another tidbit...Molly apparently loved the helicopters over the city during the convention and is going to be disappointed that there will no longer be such a profusion of them!) Overall, an excellent show at an always enjoyable venue...a good way to finish out the summer, and way more fun than getting arrested... Mark's a superb songwriter. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Sep 2004 11:32:44 -0700 From: "Gina" Subject: [lucy-list] Finding Lucy for yourself. I tried to turn my best friends (married to each other) on to Lucy by playing a few CDs and chatting them up a bit. They thought it was nice and that was about it. These are indeed people who enjoy the folk and singer/'songwriter genre. I even brought Richard Shindell with me on a Halloween visit and explained how his girlfriend took everything including the candy for the Trick or Treaters and how he had to hide in a dark house... Still, the response was lukewarm at best. Then one day I was talking to one of these friends who said, "I heard the most beautiful song on NPR and I think it was that Lucy person. " She proceeded to describe the song and I realized that it was "I Had Something." She went on and on about how she liked everything about the song, including the harmonies... I had a Lucy concert coming up and got "The Red Thread," had Lucy sign it and mailed it to them. They were just going to listen to just that one song, but couldn't resist sitting and listening intently to the entire album. This is significant because they are insanely busy with working full time, 5 kids and one of them going to law school on top of working full time. They loved the album and new Lucy fans were born. They have birthdays very close to each other, so I sent them the rest of Lucy's CDs with a Cry3 thrown in for good measure. They LOVED it. What I find interesting about this is that the discovery had to be made kind of independently of my own enthusiasm. I have noticed this when trying to share music or anything in the arts with others. It's almost as if people look at the same thing more critically when you present it to them than when they discover for themselves. So, the question is, has anyone else noticed this sort of trend or is it just me? She said she hadn't done it in 25 years or so and she said the name of the person who wrote it but I didn't catch it. It was amazing and I hope she keeps doing it. I think my jaw was on the floor the entire time and when she finished Benay and I just looked at each other with big grins :) I tried searching for it but have had no luck. The chorus was something (sorta kinda) like this. (something about dreams) and it'll probably break Open your heart and it aches Open the window it'll probably rain Nothing ventured nothing gained And in the first chorus there was some mention of a gray goose :) Now how's that for descriptive...ok class assignment is to figure out what the hell that song is. You may work in groups. So, the question is, has anyone else noticed this > sort of trend or is it just me? It's just you. ;-) Kidding of course, and I've noticed the same thing myself both as a presenter and a recipient. I think a lot of it has to do with the context and the setting in order to get hooked. Arts have an emotional appeal and if things aren't in order it may not work out. - -- Cheers, Doug Fuller Boston ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Sep 2004 16:18:31 -0400 From: Lisa Kling Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Lucy in Bridgeport 9/4 Uh, I think I know the answer...is there a prize involved??? :-) Deidre McCalla recorded a song called "Nothing Ventured" and recorded it on a audio tape called /*Don't Doubt it*/ . I can't find the release date--i can't find my copy and I don't see it on her web site. As such, I can't pin-point time or authorship, but it is my gut feeling that Deidre did write the song as it would fit into the body of her other work. I know I bought my copy of the tape in 1989 and it wasn't her most current release. It was her second release and to my knowledge neither of the first two were ever were transferred to CD. The lyrics below aren't my exact memory but so close that I am 98% sure it's the song. She used to joke about how all her lyrics were so depressing and she really was an upbeat person. And to merge the threads here, if you follow this link, you can hear a mp3 from her newest release called Playing for Keeps. The song is called "If God only Knew." So go and listen and then tell my whether you like her! http://www.deidremccalla.com/deidremccallaifg.html Lisa Kling Kristen Myshrall wrote: > Nope, it wasn't that song it was an old one.
