[lucy-list] FRFF2004 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 28 Jul 2004 16:10:15 -0500 From: "Timothy Bruce" Subject: [lucy-list] Falcon Ridge Reflecting Pool.... Hmmph! My Falcon Ridge? I knew it would be kinda odd, but the deluge made it even odder. I must start by saying that my French wife's first camping experience ever was not ruined by the harsh weather conditions on the second day. I actually did a very good job of packing for this trip and so we had a large, new tent which did not go over in the storm and only leaked through a couple of seams. That water which entered was easily contained by sacrificing a flannel sheet and some dirty laundry and bailing-out the water with paper cups. Most all of our belongings were kept dry by piling them on the inflatable Coleman air bed which was in the middle of our jumbo tent. And we had tasty provisions inside the tent! When the storm had reduced from a deluge to a mere downpour, we ventured out in rain ponchos, umbrellas, and beach shoes to enjoy the weather a little and see how others had fared (not well at all!). Two of our umbrellas were immediately punched inside-out by the wind, which had suddenly shifted to the other direction. So we jumped back into the tent and waited for it to diminish further from a downpour to merely a steady soaking, then re-emerged with just our ponchos and beach shoes. We visited the various public tents (which were full of wet, shivering people!) and ended up at the kids tent, where Annie Wenz was scheduled to perform a workshop. Annie had been up at Camp Dar the night before, playing guitar and "drinking our wine". She flattered me by calling me up on the stage to accompany her on hand percussion (djembe), which I did so she could work the crowd. After that we went back to our tent, changed into clean, dry clothes, and jumped en-masse into dry sleeping bags on the air bed. We recovered nicely from the ordeal after that. One interesting side effect of the storm is that the June and Johnny tribute was moved from the workshop stage to the main stage, which was right outside our tent. This meant that we could listen to the whole show in clear stereo sound with a sightline and binoculars to view anything which sounded intrigueing. (This great location halfway up the hill on the right side is a time-honored Camp Dar perk!) By the time the Lucy/Greg/Eliza/Richard show rolled around, the weather had gotten much better and did not effect the show adversely at all (provided you had found something warm and dry to put on for the night). At this point, I must confess to have been a poor Lucy-lister as I wrote down nearly nothing the entire weekend. Thus, we must still rely on dear Benay to interpret her soggy notes. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed the show and was especially charmed by Eliza and her accompanists, whom I'd never seen before live. Saturday got warm and muggy right off. Still, I had to do my utmost to dry things out as best I could before bedtime because we were driving out the following morning and would be shipping the tent back by UPS the day after that. Didn't want to pay for and ship 30 pounds of water and end up five days later with 20 pounds of water and 10 pounds of mold and mildew! So I draped shirts, socks, ponchos and the flannel sheet all over my car and weighted them down with festival chairs and beach shoes. It was actually a pretty windy day, which helped alot. Still, the dew was SO HEAVY Saturday night that the tent was soaked all over again when it was time to pack it up Sunday morning! I stuffed the whole thing into the trunk and high-tailed it to our next destination--Atlantic City--where I bought a bag of clothespins and affixed the huge tent, rainfly, screen porch groundcloth and over-sized tarp to a chain link fence outside out hotel and with a couple of bottles of Heineken purchased down the street sat in the lot waiting for the four giant "flags" to dry. It was such a comical sight that I videotaped it! These four large flapping objects attached to a fence with the towering and gleaming Trump Casino and Hotel towers completely filling the background. Pretty funny, if you ask me. But I digress.... Lucy's Saturday set was awesome, not merely because of the songs she selected; not merely because the sun was shining; not merely because she was truly the thinnest and "foxiest" I'd seen her EVER; not merely because she had Duke Levine accompanying her on electric stringed instruments, BUT because of the guest vocalists she invited up. I counted three of them: Richard Shindell, John Gorka, and Eliza Gilkeson. Then, her set was immediately followed by Gorka's, in which she joined John on three seperate occasions. She did the same for Richard, during his set later on that day. Benay was right in saying that Lucy was all over the place this weekend. I photographed Lucy's mainstage set and managed to get a quick glimpse of little Molly watching in the wings. Lucy said this was her "first festival" and that she had taken an interest in eating mud and straw (which had been strewn over the muddy walkways after the rain) I must confess that I did not see Lucy at all of her workshop appearances. Family obligations determined my comings and goings more than I would have liked. But I saw all of her mainstage appearances, I did get briefly to the Dave Carter tribute at Camp Happytown and I did play songs at Camp Dar after hours on both Thursday and Saturday nights. (I performed Lucy's "I Had Something" and "One Good Reason" as well as Dave Carter's version of "Cowboy Singer".) So my festival was fulfilling enough, I guess, particularly because it occurred on days 8, 9, 10 and 11 of a 13 day trip and I was sorta running on fumes by then. Now I can look forward to a couple of Lucy appearances this fall in small towns within driving distance of home. In many ways, these small town shows are best because Lucy is far more accessible after the show to go over matters with. Any other FRFF-2004 stories out there? It was my fifth in a row and surely was memorable! Timothy (now back) in south Minneapolis >>>Hi All, First of all I would like to say how sorry I was to hear that you had such a rough time at Falcon Ridge Benay! I was there too<<< ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Jul 2004 22:04:25 -0700 (PDT) From: Deb Woodell Subject: [lucy-list] FRFF2004 Because it was my partner Fran's first FRFF and she has a bad foot, my participation was limited, compared with previous outings. We stayed at a B&B in South Egremont, Mass., but did set up a small "respite tent" in case she needed it in the handicapped-camping area (right next to the corral and all those odors, ugh! People with disabilities deserve better than that!) We stayed away Friday, because of the rain. Thanks to the Berkshire Eagle for informing me that John Gorka was at the Guthrie Center Friday night, so yay! for seeing that. It was a terrific show! I also thought Lucy was terrific, both solo and in her guest appearances. We stuck with mostly mainstage, in the handicapped seating area, because of Fran's foot. So we didn't see the workshops. Many, many other highlights, but I think in its own way, because I didn't know him much, I thought Mark Erelli was wonderful!
