Last Saturday night, July 10th, was Lucy's performance with John Gorka at the Bridgeport Zoo. Elaine and Gerry and I spent a delightful afternoon and marveling at the wonders of small-town Connecticut from wild raspberries (which we ate) to wild turkeys (which we did not) before heading to the zoo. The evening was gorgeous, and we wandered the perimeter of the concert area and amused ourselves amidst the stone animal statues along the pathways, managing to prove that you cannot live in bronze or stone, but you CAN get thoroughly scraped by a stone bear when trying to sit on its back for pictures! The Peacock Pavilion, the stage where the concert was held, once again lived up to its name---the peacocks were out in full force, often breaking into a cry that sounded something like that of a very disgruntled cat and punctuated the evening periodically throughout the show. The peacocks would also occasionally flutter to the roof of the pavilion, and between sets one held us spellbound with preparations to fly from there to a nearby tree, milking the audience's suspense for all it was worth before completing the journey! It was a beautiful evening (marred only by the fact that Kristen was unable to join us and we missed her). There were more than 300 people in attendance, seated at picnic tables in the back and sprawled on surprisingly comfortable bales of hay (as we were) at the front. Maria Sangiolo opened, followed by a most enjoyable set from Christopher Williams. Finally, it was time for John and Lucy...except their introducer had to go on and on because they didn't appear quite on schedule. At last, they made their entrance. For the next hour and a half, Lucy and John held us spellbound as they alternated songs, harmonizing on almost everything...it was simply gorgeous. The set list---whose legibility so that I can type it here can be entirely credited to a pen light provided by the ever-thoughtful Gerry---was as follows: Good Noise Written on the Back of His Hand Stranger With Your Hair (gosh, almost typed "Stranger IN Your Hair"...guess that would be a different song entirely!) Ten Year Night Blue Chalk The Red Thread Let Them In Line in the Sand Branching Out If You Could See A Saint's Complaint Don't Mind Me I'm From New Jersey This Is Home Trouble & Care By Way of Sorrow Love is Our Cross to Bear (Lucy actually clapped when John started playing this one, clearly happy they'd be singing it!) Return of the Grievous Angel Encore: People Get Ready Early on, John managed to jokingly introduce Lucy as being known as the "dominatrix of folk" and wouldn't let it drop...he kept on and on, and Lucy was embarrassed but laughing, reminding him repeatedly that this was a family show! Very funny...and it all went over the kids' heads, presumably. Also, they discussed Lucy's fear that bugs (of which there were many) would fly in her mouth while she was singing, and John discussed getting bees in his mouth while bicycling, which did not seem to comfort Lucy at all! I mentioned the kids...there were lots of kids there, including at least four little adopted Chinese girls (with at least three different families) I could see just from my vantage point----they all looked to be having a great time. Later we saw two of them being introduced to Lucy by their mom---the younger one was about Molly's age, had been adopted at about the same time as Molly from a different part of China, and was named Molly too! Absolutely adorable. Before we departed, Gerry and Elaine and I managed a brief hello to Lucy...at the sight of Elaine's wound from her tangles with the stone bear earlier, Lucy said, "You should put some Bacitracin on that!" and with flawless timing, John Gorka interjected, "She knows---she's a DOCTOR!" Well...not THAT kind of doctor...but Lucy sure helped fill the prescription for one happy evening! (And this time around, nobody came close to dropping a rock on her foot during the signing---this was the same venue where that nearly happened two years ago. Still, I couldn't help but notice that unlike the last time, Lucy and John were behind a table for the signing...perhaps just in case!). There have been some unbelievable sights -- the kind you see on the Weather Channel and think happen in other parts of the country. It's pretty dramatic and my best goes to all of them, as well.
