I'd have to agree with Rick. I'm just not "enthralled" by it... I've still got tickets to see her at Wolf Trap, though. MCC always puts on a great show! If you get your hands on Patty Griffin's Impossible dream, Loretta Lynn's van lear rose and MCC.. you are all set.. She sets a tone that is not your Buddy Miller rockin country cd but rather a comtemplative and rather adult cd. the cd has some rockin moments..the writing is smart, lyrics and witty.. its classic chapin at her best.... I think this is the next step in her evolution ...her last 3 cds are a progression to a different space or place. so if you are expecting 80-90's country ...this isnt it..its an americana cd with steel petal and dobro and mandolin...but no DUKE.. CAn she write a country folk pop song, you bet... can she write more than that..I think she has she also writes from teh perspective of a 46 year old woman.. (remembering she is one of privledge and 5 grammys) you can listen to it at any of the cd listening stations at borders and B&N and try it yourself.. Matt Rollings co produced in nashville.... john jennings is in her band and on the cd.. Sometimes a change in producer presents a healthy change.. sometimes that change is good..and in this case..its not the same old, same old.. the sound is what you would expect from a 46 year old... its a cd with themes of travelling and with staying and finding your one true love in these troubled times...This cd is breath of fresh air... If you want to rock out.. Get Loretta Lynn with Jack WHITE... ITS A CD to drive wtih.... as a fan of dave carter and tracy grammer, chapin named the cd from one of the lines in a letter that Tracy wrote to fans upon dave's death... i think that this cd takes time and needs to be pulled apart layer by layer..the songwriting is supreme and harmonies sublime..the orchestration and production are A-one it was worth the three year wait... See her live.. its a rocking show... Kevin Barry and James Harrah play guitars...She will play your favorites but look to more quiet moments... and then she breaks out... This woman knows how to develop a setlist, show and command a band and she looks like she is having a hell of a time... Jim lauderdale is opening.. Jim is a long time friend of Buddy and Julie Miller and lived in their house with them for a while.. he is a songwriters songwriter and has hits through George JOnes, patty loveless, worked with Dr ralph stanley 2x, robert hunter of the dead... Jim lauderdale looks like gram parsons and dresses in glitter lilke GP.... its uncanny to see these glittery 2 piece suits... This show is worth your time and money.... the cd is too... sharon - -- yes sometimes you get there in spite of the route losing track of your life and what it's all about the road seems to know when to straighten right out the closer you get to elysium mary chapin carpenter ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 May 2004 10:24:05 -0400 From: Subject: Re: [lucy-list] the chapin cd I have to say that I think the Patty Griffin CD is a classic, right from the opening notes. Having said that, it is not a happy happy upbeat CD. Great music for accompanying "House of Sand and Fog" or "Sophie's Choice". But a classic CD for sure. I haven't bought the Loretta Lynn CD, but it's on my list. There's a Kim Richey retrospective that just came out which is a real keeper. I've only seen MCC once, but let me tell you about it. This was at Telluride about 3 years ago. It had just rained a bit as we waited for MCC, about 5 pm or so. The clouds parted, the sun came out and so did MCC and the band, singing these joyous songs, sung about adulthood and middle age by adults of middle age, and it was glorious. The mountains, the cool air, great music with some depth to it. Brought a tear to my eyes.
