A few months ago, I let the wonderful people on the Lucy-list know that I was expecting. Since my due date was about a week before Lucy will come to Ann Arbor, I figured I'd miss her and asked you all to submit as many concert reviews as possible. At that time, Benay asked that I keep you informed about the baby. I am happy to report that Hannah Rose Marsik arrived 16 days early (April 9th at 9:04pm). I went into labor about 2 hours after seeing the Nields play at the Ark on April 8th. Hannah weighed in at 7 pounds, 8 ounces and was 21 inches long. She had a full head of hair (which her dad kind of envies (grin)). I don't have a web page and don't want to clutter up the list with attachments, so you'll have to take my word that she's a cutie (no bias here...). Of course, now my dilemma is that I already bought 2 tickets to see Lucy in Ann Arbor, thinking that my husband would go with a friend or one of our parents. Now, since Hannah was so early, should I go to the concert? I'm at a loss. If I do, I'll likely be sleep deprived (and I don't want to fall asleep at the show). If I don't go, I'll miss seeing Lucy, and she usually only makes it to Ann Arbor once a year. Hmmm. Anyway, thanks for listening. Hope all is well, Theresa ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 23:18:26 -0400 From: Benay Bubar Subject: [lucy-list] and a review of the usual kind---Lucy at Joe's Pub 4/21 First of all, CONGRATULATIONS, THERESA! Hannah is no doubt gorgeous---without pictures, we'll just have to imagine (lovely name, too!). Best wishes to all of you, and thank you for letting us know. I must say I'm glad Hannah came WHEN she did, too, on a personal level...as it happens, a beloved teacher of mine died the day you went into labor, and I've been really sad about that. Of course, I know there are people dying and babies being born every day, and I haven't even met you...but it is somehow comforting to know that this particular new little life was coming into the world just as this incredible man who meant so much to me was leaving it. Anyway, here is my review, dedicated (assuming this is a compliment) to Hannah for her...um...twelve-days-old birthday (hope you've played her some Lucy music---you have a responsibility to make her Lucy's youngest fan, you know!). Tonight was Lucy's first of three nights at Joe's Pub, a venue she'd never played before. It's a dinner-and-drinks place, with tables in the front and a bar area in the back. No seat is really terrible, though the fact that there was a real piano on the stage might have blocked some people's view---the audience there ends up spreading around WAY to the right of the performer such that I think some people might have only seen Lucy's back. (I had an OK side view of Lucy---who, probably in deference to the heat, had ditched the fancy jacket for a sleeveless gray shirt---but got only brief glimpses of Duke Levine.) I ended up dragging my boss along with me, since he hadn't seen Lucy in a long time, and I was delighted to see Donna and Bruce and to have the lovely surprise of putting another Lucy-list name to a face by meeting Audrey and her husband Gary, who were seated right next to me (Audrey deserves a medal for the fact that she was pleasant and delightful company even AFTER I managed to drop a very heavy bag on her foot immediately upon sitting down!) Anyway, the worst thing about Joe's Pub is that they pack in two shows a night, and Lucy's was the earlier one. While that got everyone home at a sane time, it meant that Lucy's set was held strictly to JUST over an hour. She did maximum singing and minimum talking in that time, so she managed to pack in quite a bit. While Lucy kept asking for little adjustments to HER sound, the sound for the audience was nearly perfect. The set list: Written on the Back of His Hand I Had Something (which nearly got MUCH more exciting for me, because right about then _I_ had something---tortellini! I'd ordered it for dinner, it arrived with a flourish...and I soon realized how much of a mistake it is to order something swimming in tomato sauce that one has to stab at with a fork in a dark room while trying to attend to a Lucy performance---I managed to land a large drop of BOILING hot sauce on my wrist in the midst of I Had Something, and Lucy very nearly got a shriek as unexpected audience accompaniment!) No Place to Fall (with story of meeting Townes van Zandt) End of the Day (Mom's favorite song) Ten Year Night The Red Thread (Lucy talked about Molly just before singing this and, as usual, got a little emotional...and just after she started, my eye got irritated for some unknown reason. The pain then spread to the other eye...and suddenly both my eyes were tearing uncontrollably. I had my glasses off, I had my napkin over my face, the tears kept streaming down...and I was basically praying that no one at my table was looking at me, because I knew I looked for all the world like I was bawling over the song. And indeed, after the show, my boss said to me in wonderment, "You looked like you were REALLY touched by The Red Thread!" I had to admit that there had been other, less noble motivation for my little crying jag...and that, while I loved the song, if I got THAT emotional every time I heard it, I'd probably need to be institutionalized.) This Is Home Don't Mind Me Brooklyn Train (beautiful, beautiful, beautiful...) Line in the Sand I'm Looking Through You (I LOVE when Lucy and Duke rock out on this one!) Land of the Living (with the shortest intro ever---"this song takes place right here in this neighborhood"---that was all that needed to be said) By Way of Sorrow Encore: Guinevere I think my favorite moment of the night was when, just after The Red Thread, Lucy mentioned the NPR interview and said she had heard from just about everyone about it, including her high school chemistry teacher and her high school gym teacher! She sounded especially surprised to have heard from the gym teacher, since, she said, she had NOT been good at gym---she had gotten the Most Improved Student award for sinking a few free throws in basketball! And gosh, you know, if I hadn't loved Lucy before, I would have loved her after she said THAT! Lucy's music touches on so many of the bonds between people---parents and children, people in New York, people in the world---but I argue that she has missed a major undercurrent of human connection....the threads that connect people who were really bad at gym. These are my people...and it turns out Lucy is one of us too! I decided someone should really make an album for those of us whose memories of gym class involve endless repetitions of the following scenario: 1. The gym teacher gives the instructions for the day's activity. 2. We assume the gym teacher is kidding and is soon going to slap his/her knee, guffaw, and proceed to give us the REAL instructions, for something that would actually be comprehensible and perhaps feasible. 3. The gym teacher is not kidding. 4. Chaos. 5. Torture. Songs on this album---working title: "You Expect Me To Do WHAT???"---could include "I Want to Go So Far Outfield the Ball Will Never Find Me" (baseball/softball)..."It's Not My Vault" (floor exercises)..."Well, It Almost Went Over the Net That Time" (tennis/volleyball), and "Oh-God-No-Please-Don't-Make-Me-Dive" (swimming). And, well, I'll credit Lucy for the inspiration, but if someone else beats me to making this album, dibs on a share of the royalties! :-) Benay ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Apr 2004 23:54:48 -0400 From: "Doug Fuller" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] a review of a different kind.... - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Theresa Marsik" > > I am happy to report that Hannah Rose Marsik arrived 16 days early (April 9th at 9:04pm).
