Re: [lucy-list] Lucy on WFUV - MONDAY AFTERNOON ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 17 Apr 2004 10:41:51 +0100 From: "Donald Anderson" Subject: [lucy-list] UK Review - The Red Thread This is the first review I've seen so far in the UK music press from the free HMV Choice magazine - under the "Country" section , but hey at least they reviewed it My jaw almost dropped when I thought Lucy was on the front cover , but alas it was newcomer Katie Melua "These are rich times for connoisseurs of American female songwriting rivalling the early 70's heyday of Joni Mitchell and Carole King. In recent years we've enjoyed the remarkable renaissance of Emmylou Harris , the potent maturing of Lucinda Williams and the welcome arrival of Gillian Welch. Now we can add Lucy Kaplansky to that list. Not that she's exactly a newcomer - The Red Thread is her fifth album for the Minnesota based Red Hose label. If she's previously evaded your radar , now is the time to tune in , because Kaplansky has never sounded better. I Had Some Thing is haunting , modern bluegrass that Alison Krauss would be proud to call her own . Line In The Sand is a powerful commentary on the futility of war , whether in Baghdad or on the West Bank. Land Of The Living is full of tender longing , while This Is Home is an anthem to the joy of belonging. The Red Thread weaves it's way through a bruised bunch of heartfelt songs , embroidered with love , sung with needlepoint conviction " HMV Choice March/April 2004 - Issue 23 Donald ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Apr 2004 09:54:47 -0400 From: Benay Bubar Subject: [lucy-list] UK review; NPR interview > The Red Thread weaves it's way through a bruised bunch of heartfelt > songs , > embroidered with love , sung with needlepoint conviction " Lovely review overall---thanks for sharing it, Donald---but my favorite part by far is "needlepoint conviction." Not sure I've heard anybody use exactly those two words together before. Of course, I assume that it means "conviction that is as well-defined and focused as the point of a needle," rather than "the level of conviction one feels when one is doing needlepoint work" (the latter, for me, would be more properly referred to as "needlepoint confusion"). At any rate, I think I will strive to throw that into a sentence at least once a day... Incidentally, I DID manage to hear the Red Thread interview yesterday in its entirety---I knew I could've just listened online later, but still I forced (no, really, I swear----just politely asked!) one of the aforementioned video game maven freelancers to agree to handle anything attention-grabbing that happened in the office between 5:50 and 6:00 p.m....and that worked! It was a lovely little interview, and I think they ended up playing almost the whole song The Red Thread, albeit in pieces. It wasn't a hugely long segment, and it wasn't that there was anything earthshatteringly new in the conversation that people who have heard Lucy's music and been to a show or two wouldn't have some idea of already. But it was quite moving nonetheless, and I was also thinking about all the people who might NOT be familiar with, but might really like, Lucy and her music and who might just happen to tune into NPR and hear it...and the piece was so well crafted that I couldn't help thinking it would draw them in. (And while of course one has to take these things with a VERY LARGE grain of salt, The Red Thread was #11 on Amazon this morning...not sure where it was beforehand, so there's no real comparison to be made, but I think that's good.) Heading to the post office now, with needlepoint conviction, before it closes... Got this in an email from an aunt who knows that _I_ like Lucy and has heard me mention her, but is in no way particularly familiar with Lucy herself...and I had not talked to this aunt in several weeks, and I had certainly NOT mentioned Lucy on NPR to her: > I was driving home from work yesterday, listening to NPR. I was > aware of some nice music, and an interview going on. When the musician > mentioned a daughter from China, I began really paying attention and - > YES! > It was Lucy Kaplansky! She sounds very nice, and I was thrilled that > she > was on national radio. Her CD should start flying off the shelves. So there it is, an actual report from someone who was not actively TRYING to listen for that interview, but heard it and liked it...and OK, I can hardly say my aunt was totally unbiased because she'd certainly heard OF Lucy enough to realize whom she was listening to. Still, it makes me happy to think she just stumbled across that interview...and to think that there have got to be so many other people like my aunt out there who did the same...
