That's a 6 hour drive from Omaha, but I've convinced the family that a trip to Mall of America will make it worthwhile. The kids are going to stay at the hotel while my wife (a Lucy virgin) and I see the show. (This illustrates the advantage of having a 19 year old son to go with your younger kids--built-in babysitting. Until you calculate how long you'll be paying college tuition.) Unfortunately, a bad cold/sinus infection is sweeping through the family. Let me tell you, having a three year old and a six year old climb in bed with you (a queen size bed, at that) and cough and kick and occasionally yell "NO" when his brother kicks him, while you yourself aren't feeling that great, hanging on just barely to the edge of the bed, well, that's not a good night. So we pray that we will regain our health by Friday. Anyway, looking forward to a great show Saturday. The Nassau show was a unique experience , without going into too much detail as Benay has already provided an excellent account of the gig , with musicians and performers that couldn't have been more diverse - from an ageing Jazz band to "modern" poetry ( which means you know get to talk explicitly about sex and swear a lot - Poetry wasn't like that when I went to school ! , and let's not mention the professor who thought he could sing and has a cd out - scary , believe me. At the soundcheck , which we invited ourselves into , Lucy actually recognised her Scottish visitors which I was really pleased about - Our lady has a brilliant memory as we hadn't seen her for about 18 months. It was great to hear Brooklyn Train live for the first time - one of my favourite songs from the new album - The other two songs from The Red Thread (This Is Home & I Had Something) we had heard back in Oct 02 when they were still at an early stage of development. And then there was Peekskill ....... We arrived early , around 2.00 pm thinking there would be plenty to see and do , but .... there wasn't (Apologies to any Peekskill residents , who may wish to stop reading right now :) ) quite why there is such a lovely theatre in the middle of nowhere is anybody's guess , but on our several rounds of the local streets started to see some strange Lucy & Richard connections , such as the hairdresser called Lucy's (and by the way I've never seen so many hairdressing shops in such a small place , and they were still open at midnight!) , and The Richard Gallery - - so maybe our musical hero's have local business connections ?! We trailed the streets and came upon this store which had a sign pinned to the door which read " Shoplifters will cheerfully be beaten to a pulp regardless of race , creed or national origin" so what sort of place was this ? We decided it was time to eat so went round , the few , local restaurants which were all fully booked and ended up in a diner which resembled a railway carriage , but hey they had meatloaf so I was happy , Liz wasn't as they didn't sell wine - Ha Ha ! Anyway onto the show - Lucy opened with a Townes Van Zandt cover , which I hadn't heard her sing previously and told us about the time when she had opened for Townes that he had got down onto one knee and asked Lucy to marry him (She politely declined apparently) - Those of you (like me) who were fortunate enough to see Townes live will appreciate that he had a very deep sense of humour , and often told pretty unfunny jokes onstage. Seeing Lucy perform in front of a 1,000 capacity sold out show was a great experience , and I thought quite different to the more intimate shows that I've attended in the past. We were to be treated to most of The Red Thread , and the first song out was to be Love Song / New York which Lucy introduced as written by her friend Bill Morrissey , then couldn't remember the opening lyrics .... She asked (pleaded) with the audience for someone , anyone to remind her of the opening words , but no joy .... then she asked if anyone had the new album with them (and she told us she wasn't kidding) , and as nobody made a move I made a suggestion to Liz that almost threatened my marriage - Hey you've got my copy in your bag - go and help Lucy out , and so she did and Lucy recognised this Scottish lass with the broad accent and told Peekskill that "This woman's from Scotland , which is awesome" , Lucy was out of a fix and we were delighted to be able to help and Liz returned to her seat (totally embarrassed) with a round of applause from the audience. The CD was with us as I wanted to get it signed to commemorate our seeing Lucy in NY, never thought it would be required as it was. I need to mention the great Duke Levine who accompanied Lucy in the most brilliantly understated way which really enhanced Lucy's sound - hopefully one day we'll get a chance to see her tour with a full band , that would be something. Two , very different , but great shows - Loved them both And by the way I'm not claiming to be the furthest travelled to see Lucy play as I can't .... as we had already booked our trip well before these two shows were announced - so I think Deriek (sorry if I spelled it wrong) has that honour as if I remember correctly he travelled specifically from Germany (the place where Lucy never plays) to the US to see Lucy a year or so ago Oh and by the way the CD travelled nearly 8,000 miles , and I still didn't get it signed .... as we had to leave to catch our train before Lucy came out after the show ! - so maybe I could mail it to one of you and get Lucy to sign for me , oop's... I mean us ! Thanks to all who said hello - What a great bunch of people !!
