That sort of thoughtfulness about a specific Lucy song is something we don't see much on the Lucy-list (I don't tend to do it because it doesn't occur to me often, and when it does, it doesn't always inspire me to post), but it's very welcome. Your comments certainly add to my appreciation of Love Song/New York, which was already one of my favorites on The Red Thread. It's funny how I kind of have a hard time distinguishing my FAVORITE Lucy songs (at this point, probably If You Could See, Written on the Back of His Hand, and Turn the Lights Back On) from the "perfect" Lucy song (Love Song/New York may indeed be a "perfect" cover, for all the reasons you mentioned...and Ten Year Night is perhaps the most "perfect" of the Lucy-authored songs in my mind, though I can't articulate a good reason for that except that it's so utterly believable. That's one of the qualities of Lucy's music that I treasure in general, the fact that there's some quality in her voice which makes me believe what she's singing, such that I never end up feeling like she's just pouring out notes and words---I mean, of course, she's human and I imagine there are songs she gets sick of and times when she does that, but it's not apparent). Hardly the most intelligent post here...but I have to go get ready for work! A bit of news, though---Lucy's most recently recorded Mountain Stage appearance, from some weeks back, is now scheduled for broadcast the week after 4/9. There's a playlist, too: http://www.mountainstage.org/html/radio/RADIO.html Benay ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Mar 2004 13:11:04 -0500 From: "Donna Myers" Subject: [lucy-list] Re: The perfect Lucy song Aren't they all perfect? I totally agree with you Robert. "Love Song/New York" is a perfect song. I can't believe Lucy almost didn't record it! Lucy does a wonderful job with all of her covers. She makes them her own!! I wish she would record "More Than This"! I also love Jonatha Brooke's vocals on "Love Song/NY". "Let the years roll away, let the seasons disappear" grabs me too!!! The background vocals on Lucy's cds are always beautiful. They really seem to shine on this cd..especially her own. Her background vocals on the song "The Red Thread" are stunning. They add so much to the song!!!! Donna Benay..they make you work on your birthday? Have a great one!! ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V6 #61 ****************************** This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
