However, love it though I do, I have one major problem with the album so far. There is ONE respect in which The Red Thread is, in fact, TERRIBLE, probably the worst thing Lucy's ever done. I've tried to get around it, or just not think about it, but the ugly fact keeps staring me in the face: However high the album may climb in the Amazon rankings, it is stuck with a dismally low PPF. What I am speaking of is, of course, the Parody Potential Factor. Anyone who knows me or who has been on this list for a while knows that there are few things I enjoy more than turning one of somebody's (particularly, Lucy's) painstakingly crafted songs on its head and creating an alternate version about something totally different and usually extremely shallow, like bugs or rocks or hair highlights. (I would refer any interested souls to the searchable list archives except that they don't seem to be working lately, so you'll just have to take my word for it.) While I've been on hiatus from parodies for quite a while, I was looking forward to fresh source material with the new album. Imagine my dismay, then, when I realized The Red Thread has little to offer in this regard. I mean, Land of the Living is untouchable for obvious reasons...Brooklyn Train, too (at least for a New Yorker and a Brooklynite---I can't touch that one). I can't really see The Red Thread (the song) going anywhere, parody-wise...or Line in the Sand, either. And I have nothing on I Had Something. All in all, I have been pitifully reduced to the faint hope that when I go to Alaska in a few months (yes, this is true...and no, it's NOT for a Lucy show, though I won't say I don't wish it were!), I will be inspired to write, say, This Is Nome. It's a sad, sad state of affairs, I tell you... This cd has hit an emotional chord with me. It's the same feeling I get after I've seen a great movie or read a wonderful book. I think about the cd long after I've listened to it. The Red Thread is very powerful! Lucy and Rick have managed to write these compelling and personal songs that touch me so deeply. I can't listen to the title track without crying and thinking of the wonderful relationship I have with my mother. All the songs on this cd strike me emotionally..it is The Perfect Red Thread!!! I must comment on the beautiful harmonies. Richard, John, Jonatha and Eliza's voices are terrific additions to these songs. It's only fitting that Lucy adds her own gorgeous harmonies as well. BRAVO!!!!! Donna ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Feb 2004 13:01:21 -0500 From: "Kristen Myshrall" Subject: [lucy-list] Half the Sky update HI everyone! As of right this minute I'm so excited to tell you that we just reached our initial goal of $300 in donations to Half the Sky! This means that we have enough now to support one child for an entire year. We'll get a picture, name and address of this child...which we'll send the original to Lucy but will keep a copy of the information in case we want to send presents or letters to this child. But....there's still almost 2 weeks to get your donation in!!! With any extra money we can do any of the following.... $25 - infant nurture or preschool education for a child for one month. $50 - care of a HTS Nanny for one month. $75 - private tutors for a HTS Big Sister. $100 - a month's worth of art supplies for a HTS preschool. $150 - costs of documentation for an entire HTS preschool classroom for one month. Plus with any extra money...i was thinking (and let me know what you think of this idea) we could put together a box of toys, books, etc. and send it to the Chongqing Child Welfare Center for the kids. So on top of money donations....if you woudl prefer to buy a present and send it to this orphanage ... you can send anything along to me and I'll package it up and we'll let Lucy know about this as well! Or if you prefer I can direct you to the mailing label for this orphange. Also...we're putting together a big card with messages to Lucy...I've already gotten some from people but if you would still like your message to go in this card just send me what you would like written. Try to keep it under 2 paragraphs so that there's room for everyone! Thanks guys...I know Lucy will love this present and we can't wait to give it to her in a few weeks! One again...my address for any donations is... Also, flash sites are not cool if you have regular dial-up internet access. I'm a bit of a neo-ludite (no high speed for me!) & prefer html sites. Pictures & access to sound files is always good, but I'm afraid Lucy has gotten some bad council on this one. Way to long to load pages & the content doesn't warrant the "bleeding edge" flash treatment. At least offer us a choice. Indeed. It's not cool to require everybody to use your favorite plugin, or configure their browser the way you like yours, just to see your website. For enhancement, sure, go for it. But any special requirement on a web site just acts as a limiter (even if it only turns away a few percent of us). oh well. mm ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 18 Feb 2004 18:58:05 -0500 From: "Kristen Myshrall" Subject: [lucy-list] Re: Lucy's new site is up! I have to say the new site looks awesome...and i'm assuming it's not completely done as the photo gallery only has 6 pictures in it. It's nice with the music in the background. I especially loved that I when i was flipping through the pictures, "This Is Mine" was playing...it was really beautiful...and yes I'm a sap :) I'm sure if you send a message to either Lucy or the design people (the contact form is http://www.apt5a.com/sec_05.php) and enough people want it they can set up a simple text page. However, if you can get to a computer with a decent speed that is flash capable, you shoudl definitely check this out because it's gorgeous! - -K >From: "Mark E. Thanks for the info Kristen...how do you KNOW all this stuff? I would still prefer a regular old html site with graphic elements, not just a simple text page. Flash sites fall into the "just because you can, doesn't necessarily mean you should" category of web based communication. Personally I would rather see Lucy spend her hard earned money on upgrading some of her live performances with back-up musicians. Not all the time, probably just at the larger venues. Her music, lyrics, and live performance's deserve the best. No, I'm not talking about a Yanni style orchestra! But I did see her perform with Susan Werner, and Susan had a stand-up bass player accompany her. You know, that string instrument that's bigger than most human beings. Well, it was a nice compliment to Susan's guitar & piano. Just my twenty-two cents. It's well gone 1am here in the UK but | thought I ought to check the site out, based on the feedback so far. I would guess that a month ago, when I had slow dial-up access, it would have been a real pain...but now, with 1mb broadband, the whole thing is instantaneous. There's not a lot there, but what there is is fine and I'm sure it'll improve. Suggestions for a 'dual site' would cover us all, so I'd vote for it even though it wouldn't change what I see. The 'sweet' comment finds an echo here, though I'd use the word 'gorgeous". Just hate to look at the advance dates and see nothing for us Brits. Boo-hoo! I could listen to just that one line "I guess I'll get along, how hard can it be?" pretty much endlessly...it's so gorgeous that it just GETS me every time. (In fact, I just had to cue the song up on the computer to play right now...ahhhh, delight...except the line about "I sit watching the bugs as they bounce off the light" is currently seeming a bit TOO relevant considering the large random fly I am currently tracking around my living room and deciding whether I have the energy to make a lunge at...but that's another story...)
