Can't wait to get the CD! I happen to be playing it at the moment. I picked it up at the show on Sunday...which segues nicely into the following concert review: Lucy at The Muse/Gray Goose (I'm a bit unclear on the name) in Londonderry, NH. It's an interesting venue that has 20 or so tables that seat 4-8 at each table. It wasn't quite full so I guess may about 125 people in attendance. One nice touch is the venue serves refreshments (desserts and beverages), which are complimentary but donations are accepted (talk about a guilt trip...). So Lucy gets introduced and makes her way to the stage and the place is absolutely silent. The first thing she says is, "My god, it's so quiet." I really don't like seeing music in a place where you have to sit, even if it's solo acoustic music and this is one reason why -- the crowd just sits there. No interaction, or any kind of action for that matter. I'd be interested to hear from other people as to what type of crowds you've seen at other shows. People on their feet moving around, singing along, or just keeping quiet? Anyway, she gets going and it seems evident she's phoning this one in. She didn't have a set list (not that one is required) and on several occasions said to herself (out loud), "Hmmm, what should I play next?" She even took requests. For all I know this is her typical MO but she seemed a bit distracted...and with good reason -- not surprisingly the common theme for the evening was Molly. I'm not complaining, mind you, but if I was to be harshly critical it did detract from the performance a bit. It wasn't because she was talking about Molly and the adoption so much (in all honesty I was happy to hear the stories) but Lucy wasn't totally present. It was the first time she'd been away from Molly and she (Lucy) even said she (Lucy) was a wreck. Molly, on the other hand, was taking it fine and was probably already asleep (laughs). Several of the stories were the same as the interview whose link was posted here a couple days ago. Even though that may have sounded a bit negative (and it really isn't -- just an observation) one thing for sure is my suspicions were confirmed -- Lucy is amazing. Her voice defies description, her guitar playing is superb and her songs take on a life of their own when performed live. I'd listened to a number of songs previously but never really paid much attention to the lyrics but when you're focusing on the live performance there's a whole different impact. So much so that my date was moved to tears (twice!) and, although I'll never admit to it being that I'm a rock guy and all, it may have happened to me at one point. Absolutely brutal. As I pulled myself together I'm thinking, "Now why would you go and abuse your audience like that?" (grin) Being that I'm only a recent fan I can't identify all the songs she performed but some of them were Cowboy Singer (good song), This Is Home (GREAT song, one of the tearjerkers), Land Of The Living, The Red Thread, Brooklyn Train, You're Still Standing There, Guilty As Sin, Ten Year Night (frickin' AWESOME song), Written On The Back Of His Hand, Song For Molly (which is about her grandmother who is her daughter's namesake, BTW), Goodnight (one of my favorite songs ever, particularly as performed by Lucy) and a bunch of others. She sang her diaper changing song (funny!) and what I believe was her dad's rendition of the "A you're adorable, B you're so beautiful" song that essentially is full of insults. Quite entertaining I must say. I think she said This Is Home was sort of a sequel to Ten Year Night and she told many other stories (most of which I forget). Next to Molly the biggest topic was her ultra-hip jacket which is prominently featured in photos in The Red Thread. The story goes that she say this jacket in a window for quite a while but was not pay full price for it. When it got marked down (and even then it's the most expensive thing she's ever bought) she went into the store only to find out that Annie Lennox just bought the last size small (and Deborah Messing bought a small also). Come to find out Lucy wears a petite and she made a point to mention that she wears a smaller jacket size than Annie and Deborah (laughs). Apparently Patty Loveless bought one also but no word on what size (even more laughs). She took a break halfway through the show and I grabbed her and requested she play Goodnight (she was soliciting requests, after all). She played a couple requests as the encore and when she was deciding what to play she muttered, "Now what songs aren't I sick of singing?" I'm guessing Goodnight is one of those songs but she was kind enough to sing it anyway. She mentioned the NPR story with Scott Simon which was prompted by the clip of Goodnight that was played several weeks before and NPR got literally hundreds of e-mails asking who it was (one was from me). I was hoping to say hi after the show but there was a fairly long line and I had a bit of drive to get home. She'll be back in my area in a few weeks and I hope to catch those shows also.
