Ok, well if Sarah McLachlan is not to everyone's taste... May I introduce you to a great singer-songwriter from England.....Thea Gilmore. She's only 23, but has already made a number of albums...but 2 that you may be able to access... "Rules for Jokers " and her latest " Avalanche". I went to see her 2 weeks ago in London at a small venue called La Scala.. She mostly did new stuff from Avalanche. She had a great band with her ( bass, drums, keyboards,guitar)...and she plays guitar herself. I only mention this....( I know this is Lucy's domain)...but we do have a bit of an hiatus at the moment. So you might like to give Thea a listen. All the Best, John. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2003 11:33:34 -0800 (PST) From: Helen Mitchell Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Further Recommendation.. I'm in my second year as a college math instructor, and was a HS teacher for a year before that (and before that, an actuary for 25 years). On Monday, the principal at the HS where I taught was attacked on school grounds by some current or former students. He became principal after I left the school, so I don't know him personally. Nonetheless, I still feel as if I'm part of the school "family" and was affected by the event. As you read this, be thankful to teachers not just for what they do in teaching children, but all the obstacles, both physical and emotional they face in their jobs. Steve, what very sad news. I am a sixth grade teacher, on the list for a long time but not vocal lately. I love our music and I love helping kids learn, but it is getting incredibly hard. This year has been really tough. I volunteered to cluster a group of English language learners in one of my blocks this year and it has become a nightmare due to lack of support. I have other high needs kids that I am having trouble finding enough hours in the day to serve properly... Now G. Bush tells me I am not "highly qualified"... never mind the teaching certificate, masters degree and 10 years experience. Thank goodness I have Lucy to sing to me on my way to and from work every day... Love from part of your school family, Sarah ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Nov 2003 02:30:17 -0500 From: Benay Bubar Subject: [lucy-list] teachers and singers Hmmmm...even when we are off our "official" topic, I like the topics here... Steve, I am very sorry to hear about what happened at your former school. But the posts about teachers have made me think about the teachers I have had who have affected my life...and there have been a number of them, some of whom I appreciated at the time and some of whom I remembered fondly in retrospect. Lately I've been thinking of my elementary school music teacher and of how, even though I was just in ordinary classes where he'd play the piano and everyone would sing along, a huge part of my core musical background came from those few years. I still find myself humming random songs that I never would have come across if not for that man...I have no idea where he is now, 20-something years later (I think I heard he left my elementary school not long after I did), but I do owe a debt to him. Of course, he didn't COMPLETELY educate me musically...later, in seventh grade, another music teacher started teaching us about composition by saying: "If I were writing 'The Rose'..." and I misheard her as claiming she HAD written The Rose (which I actually hadn't heard before that point, and therefore didn't realize was already a famous song). I thought my music teacher was absolutely brilliant to have composed such a good song...it was a few weeks, I think, before someone set me straight! I thought of that last weekend when I sang The Rose at the karaoke bar... I'm enjoying hearing what artists other people are recommending, both well known and not so well known. Among my personal favorites in the lesser-known category (are Chris and Meredith Thompson, whom I saw tonight at the Postcrypt Coffeehouse at Columbia University. They're twins who play guitar, drums, and flute and sing gorgeous harmonies...they've been at Falcon Ridge several times, although they weren't official performers there this past year. They have a special place in my heart as the first performers I truly enjoy that I discovered all by myself---not through a friend or through another artist, but because I happened to be at South Street Seaport when they were playing there several years ago and I was transfixed. Not everyone is as wowed by them as I am, but I've seen them a number of times now and own all their CDs and I really enjoy them. Hey, one Lucy-related note...though I'm not from Boston, it's worth pointing out that Lucy's #14 on this year's WUMB top 100 list---this year I think the theme was songs you love to listen to when you get the blues (Lucy sure works for that!). Anyway, she was #7 last year, but it's been longer now since her last album...and #14 is VERY respectable, especially since Boston's such a big music town and Lucy doesn't even play there live all that often! Off to bed before I go over the posting limit...if I haven't already. Benay who was surrounded on the subway this morning by THREE people with iPods...and who wants one very much and thinks that maybe this was some kind of sign...but that finding several hundred dollars on the subway with which to PURCHASE an iPod would be an even better sign (alas, not yet)... ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V5 #225 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
