Condolences to Red Sox rooters. Again. (That included me, despite my Bronx heritage.) Now, do you think the Marlins and Yankees will be tied after six games? Because if they are, Game Seven of the World Series will be at Yankee Stadium the same Sunday night as the big Richard Shindell and Lucy show at the 92nd Street Y. Let's root for the Marlins to win in four. Phil ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2003 18:57:50 -0500 From: "Richard Hill" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Game Seven of the World Series? The Marlins will dump the Yankees in 4 straight. I heard a woman on WGN this afternoon suggest that the Cubs and Red Sox go ahead and play the ideal series anyway. Just ignore that "other series". The ratings would be through the roof. Yes, I know. It ain't gonna happen. But, what a great idea! ~R. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Oct 2003 20:23:26 -0400 From: "Michael Guarnaccio" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] OFF SUBJECT OF LUCY - Game Seven of the World Series? Richard, I would guess you said the same about the Red Sox dumping the Yanks. - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Hill" To: Sent: Friday, October 17, 2003 7:57 PM Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Game Seven of the World Series? > The Marlins will dump the Yankees in 4 straight. > > I heard a woman on WGN this afternoon suggest that the Cubs and Red Sox go > ahead and play the ideal series anyway. Hey, it's not impossible. Numerous times in the past, the underdog has won over an overwhelming favorite in 4 games, to wit: 1990 - Reds over Oakland 1966 - Baltimore over the Dodgers 1963 - Dodgers (w/Koufax and Drysdale) over the Yankees 1954 - Giants over the Indians (who won a record 111 regular season games) and there have been some 5 game series where the underdog won over an overwhelming favorite: 1988 - the Dodgers over Oakland 1969 - the Amazin' Mets over Baltimore Anything can happen, regardless of past records or the odds. After all, that's why they play the games to begin with! Regardless of who wins, it will be hard for the Series to top the Playoffs in excitement. Play Ball! The Yankees have the most incredible history in all of baseball. The fact that they're in the series again is no surprise. That's why the rest of the world "can't stand 'em". The young upstart Marlins pulled off an amazing comeback, and deserve to be in the series. I have absolutely nothing against the Yankees or the Marlins. They both ooze quality / deserve respect. It's just this: How sweet would it have been to have a Fenway Park/Wrigley Field "World Series"? It didn't happen, but it almost happened. The two most unlikely. The longest and second longest roles as underdogs/doormats of the major leagues. Both with beautiful old neighborhood ballparks, jammed with the best of fans. The scenario was simply a classic. Almost. Growing up a Southsider, Lucy was probably a White Sox fan(?). But, I gotta think that she was probably pullin' for the northside's Cubbies, anyway. (all speculation on my part) You're right. The whole topic is off-subject. I didn't bring it up. Lots-o-folks are hurting in Chicago and Boston. Soooooo close. Almost. Congrats to the Yanks and the Marlins. Almost. ~R.
