I found it interesting that she did NOT play The Thread because her mother was in the audience - she played at her other California gigs where mom was not present. Great review as usual - thanks Benay. susan in alameda ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Oct 2003 15:51:14 -0700 (PDT) From: Steve Gilmore Subject: [lucy-list] I'm confused! Yes, Lucy will sign CDs. Yes, Lucy ALWAYS signs CDs. Her only point last night was that she no longer will sign absolutely ANYTHING a fan wishes to present to her. She will still sign a wide variety of items aside from CDs---she has signed rocks, bananas, you name it---it's just that she can't say "I'll sign ANYTHING!!!" anymore, ever since she had to sign a dog, because she does not want to be presented with any more live animals to sign! The story was actually quite funny as she told it, much more so than in my generalized retelling. Lucy was actually very funny all evening---she thanked us for coming to see her instead of the Yankees/Red Sox game and inquired about the score---after which we got periodic updates on the score from someone who had access to it somehow---and then finally admitted she was a Chicago Cubs fan if anything! (Hey, me too---I was born in Illinois and though I didn't live there that long, they were the first sports team of any kind of which I was conscious.) She also talked about recording her new album and told us how, due to his travel constraints, she had only had two hours to record with Richard Shindell, who was singing on I Had Something...so they found a church basement on a Saturday morning in a small town where they could set up a computer and a microphone...then, as they were about to start, the boiler went on LOUDLY...and just afterthey finally figured out how to shut it off, a little old lady showed up saying she had to set up communion RIGHT THERE, RIGHT THEN...and they kicked her out! Hence was the song recorded... Anyway, sorry I was confusing, Steve. That's what happens when one tries to write clearly at one in the morning... Whew! Benay had a beautiful black shirt with red stripes. Lucy's jacket looked like it came from Trash & Vaudeville. The 10.09 show was simply amazing. I had to skip Montclair, NJ, and the this show more than made up for the cancelled Peekskill, NY show. It was also nice Lucy in a small venue again. She hadn't performed here since 2000. I have not seen Lucy since 05.24.2002 in Tarrytown. I knew she would be playing a lot of new songs, and they were all amazing. "This Is Home" struck a deep chord with the crowd. "Ring Of Fire" made my wife grin, and the sing a long was fun too. As others have mentioned, Lucy was very emotional about Molly. It was also nice hear "The Tide" so early in the set. "Turn The Lights Back On" was the most vicious version I've heard Lucy play. Overall, a fun night. Nice to see old friends who thought I just disappeared over the last year. Did I see Batgirl? I'm not sure.
