A discount bookstore in Middletown, NY is blowing out CD's a $1 a pop, and guess what I found? A clean copy of the Songwriters Exchange! The best part about it is the photo on the front cover. A young LK during her Jurassic days in the early 80's, plus a scruffy Cliff Eberhardt, a few others, including Laura Hogan (who?????) Listening to Lucy sing "Rooms" gave me a clandestine feeling due to the death of my father the week before. I felt older after listening to the song, and my thoughts/mind are clear now. Of course, we know LK will never sing Rooms again. But, we can dream......... I believe it's in row F. If anyone would like to come out and welcome Lucy at her Filene Center debut, contact me off line. Price is very negotiable. As in, I don't really care about the money but would like Lucy to get a lot of applause. Let me just say that the universe has a strange sense of humor. It is possible that some of you who do not live in New York City have thought that it must be a pretty cool thing to be an ardent Lucy fan and live in New York City. After all, LUCY lives in New York, and you might think that if you, too, lived in New York, then you might sometime, during the course of the day, stand a chance of randomly running into her. But in reality, there are millions of people in New York City, and Lucy is only here when she isn't on tour anyway...so the whole running-randomly-into-Lucy thing? Doesn't happen. Well, OK, I can't say that as an absolute blanket statement---at SOME point, Lucy fans in New York have probably seen Lucy here---but as a general rule, when you are a Lucy fan who lives in New York, it doesn't happen. And you rapidly get used to its not happening...and you realize, sensibly, that overall it is probably much better for both Lucy and her New York fans for it not to happen. You are serene. And frankly, even if you lived in New York and had never run into Lucy here but heard that somebody else you knew DID run into Lucy randomly and had a chat with her without your having been present, you'd be perfectly OK with that. I mean, as long as it wasn't, say, your parents or your boss. And your parents live somewhere Lucy never goes, and they wouldn't know her if they saw her anyway. And your boss running into Lucy...well, what's the likelihood of that? There are millions of people in New York City. Well, um, that last part...if you live in New York City, that last part IS...um...possible. If your boss is a casual Lucy fan and that's mostly your fault, then it may come to pass that one day your boss will tell you that he happened to randomly run into Lucy and went right up and introduced himself as your boss and they had a considerable chat. And, logically, you will know that your boss is basically a nice person despite being your boss, and Lucy is basically a nice person as far as you are aware, and you will figure that neither of them really thinks ill of you and even if either of them did, probably neither of them would SPEAK ill of you to the other, and you will not be not so totally self-centered as to think they spoke that extensively about you in the first place. You will be basically grateful and relieved that your boss seems to have been polite and respectful to Lucy and that Lucy seems to have been very gracious to your boss. Still, you will hear of the encounter and you will think the following: "Lucy... Chatting with... My BOSS. [Cringe.] My BOSS... Chatting with... Lucy. [Cringe.] Lucy... And my BOSS... Chatting." [Cringe.] You will reflect that you like them both, Lucy and your boss---it's not that you don't. But you also like both pizza and strawberries, and that doesn't mean you want them both in the same place at the same time. You like them both, and it sounds as if the encounter was perfectly pleasant from both sides (though of course you don't actually know Lucy's side)...still, you will have that vaguely sick feeling of worlds colliding...the emotional equivalent of nails on a blackboard. You will contemplate going to work on a fishing boat somewhere off the Alaskan coast...you wouldn't stand a chance of EVER running into Lucy there, of course, but at least your boss wouldn't either... Ah, yes, the universe has a strange sense of humor...
