Those of us that were at "the fabled Scotland scotch concert" which was in the Bein Inn near Glenfarg in early December 2001 reviewed it for the list at the time. Check the archives. If I remember rightly it was actually Donald who requested the George Harrison song, as it was not that long after George died. Here Comes The Sun had been used for years as the theme tune to the BBC TV Holiday program so virtually the entire room knew the words to at least the chorus. A good, if very cold, night. BOB DYLAN ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2003 12:34:31 -0400 From: Todd Satogata Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy at FRFF: An FRFF newbie's perspective Heyos lucy-listers, crispy FRFF-survivors, and those who were with us in spirit through the weekend, My wife Jen and I returned from FRFF late last evening in an exhausted bliss, quite elated and quite dazed from having the four-day camping- since-Wednesday experience being our very first Falcon Ridge. Some Lucy-specific perspectives and tales, starting with Lucy's set on Sunday 'cuz I know Benay's dying to hear more details *grin*, and I'll try not to reproduce what sharon and Libby have reported. Firstly, I could swear that Lucy said that she has *completed* the studio recording for her next album! (As of very recently, I think.) She said that she prefers to record with the band performing behind her, another reason why her albums sound so intimate and "live". She told the tale of calling her folks every day and choked up early on main stage, but 8000 of us on the hill saying "Hi!" to her mom seemed to help. It was a grand family time even for the artists: Katryna's daughter Amelia was there, Dar's folks, Richard's daughter, and Patty Larkin and her beautiful new boy. Lucy's set was perhaps the quietest main stage set of the weekend, but she performed beautifully solo, and with Duke, John, Richard, and Tracy. A highlight for me was "By Way Of Sorrow" with Tracy's violin as the third haunting part of an otherwise "Cry Cry" harmony; I wonder if Lucy and Richard chose to do that song for Tracy. At several points in Richard's main stage set (before Lucy's) it rained heavily enough that it cleared a bit of the crowd, and Richard most definitely *did* summon the rain. (Off-topic: he obligingly rolled his eyes when I called him "rainmaker" at his signing session, and I got a pic of him with his absolutely darling daughter. Back-on-topic: I don't think Lucy had a signing session at FRFF this year.) Even with the rain, there were several people dancing in the aisles and at the stage sides, and I was particularly moved by the signer's interpretations of "Written On The Back of His Hand". With all the rain, Lucy was having a *particularly* good hair day. I have digital photos that are a little grainy (taken through a pair of binocs; e-me off-list if you want a peek) but Lucy was ravishing in jeans and a white short-sleeve scoop-neck. No leather jacket to be seen in that weather, though her lipstick looked fabulous! I have to confess that I was NOT taking notes at Lucy's set on Sunday because I was SURE that Benay was there taking notes. Not only was I so sure, I even saw someone with Benay's Giants hat and Benay's hair sitting in the third row center doing their best Benay impersonation, and I even took a photo to prove the point. So (a) all of this is from hazy memory, and (b) Benay has the case to make a bundle for identity theft, as some other adamant Lucy fan has finally taken to impersonating Benay to get into Lucy's good graces. Thankfully I think sharon has the full set list, though I will comment that Lucy *did* do "I'm Looking Through You" (off The Beatles's "Rubber Soul") on this stage as well as The Beatles gig at the Workshop Stage, and the lovely "I've Just Seen A Face" at the Workshop. I won't burden the list with the lyrics unless someone asks; I'll just send 'em to demented sharon off-list... Speaking of Sharon, we were lookin' for you at the FUV tent on Sunday morn (after lovely guidance from Benay), but other than Benay and pals Elaine and Chris (who may not be lucy-listers but whom we met at a Lucy/Richard show), we had the misfortune to miss other lucy-listers this year. Do we have the critical mass (and community interest) to set up a Camp Lucy? Try for a designated meet'n'greet time at the mess tent? Or perhaps we'll just join the teeming throngs around sharon and Benay at the next FRFF... only 362 days to go! One non-Lucy-performance story: On Sunday morn we packed camp and moved down to lower parking. Nearby was an FRFF info booth with "Psychiatric Help: 5c" and "The Doctor Is In" signs. Wishing Lucy had been nearby, I had to console myself by telling the lovely ladies that were working the booth all about Lucy and her practice and history and music and and and... Oh yes, and I got another pic of them in their best Lucy vanPelt poses at the booth, so I can at least paste on a pic of our Lucy. After I'd regaled them with Lucy tales and given them my nickel, one offered the helpful advice of "Go find a blockhead and offer to hold his football." So I climbed the hill and did exactly that. Falcon Ridge itself was wondrous and overwhelming, amazing and exhausting, inspiring and... sunburn-inducing. Rain, sun, stars, clouds, and well over ten thousand groovy laid-back folkies of all stripes, colors, ages, beliefs, genders, preferences, and even musicalities gathered together. The emerging artists showcase itself was worth the experience, and I wish I'd had the energy and initiative to go exploring the song circles amidst the night; the starlight on Friday evening was spectacular, and like Justin Roth sang, you could practically hear the new stars emerging from the circles of light... And finally, speaking of stars of our own galaxy, congrats to Libby on the Washington Post "Songs For The Road" placement of "The Wait-A-While Estates" -- can't wait for the CD later this summer! During her set, Lucy mentioned that she and Richard and John had all bumped into each other in a corridor at their hotel, and spent half an hour talking about and comparing... their computers! They voted Lucy's as "The Babe", with no mention of what Richard and John's were voted. So not only is Lucy a babe (well, we all *knew* that), but so is her computer! During this interlude someone from the near audience asked "Which hotel?" Lucy repeated this query and then replied something like "Yeah RIGHT". Sheesh, and all we were gonna do is go ogle her laptop... -Todd (who KNEW that his Beatles' song list wasn't right) PS: Richard Thompson's session, the first time I've seen him live, was absolutely astounding, and he played a grand mix of new and old. It is perhaps personally worrisome, though, that I was consciously waiting for him to play "Wall Of Death" so he'd play a song that Benay knows. Now if only he and Lucy would have done "Don't Renege On Our Love" together... - --------------+-------------------------+----------------+----------------- Todd Satogata | C-A Accelerator Physics | (631) 344-5826 | satogata@bnl.gov - --------------+-------------------------+----------------+----------------- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Jul 2003 16:42:51 -0400 From: Jeff Bernstein Subject: Re: [lucy-list] One more FRFF snippet Todd wrote: > During this interlude someone from the near audience asked "Which hotel?" VERY appropriate after a few days of camping! The merest mention of a hotel after all this camping obviously snapped a synapse, and I *completely* misheard this exchange -- no surprise since we were up near the sound booth on the hill.
