It is a beautiful thing. AND of course this wouldn't be the Lucy-list if I didn't give the breakdown for Where Lucy Will Be. (Well, OK, it would probably still BE the Lucy-list if I didn't do that...but I'm going to do it anyway, so there): Friday, 5:00-6:20 (Workshop Stage): Study War No More workshop with Tom Paxton, Holly Near, Nerissa and Katryna Nields, Tracy Grammer, Richard Shindell, Diane Ponzio, Tim Mason Saturday 2:45-3:45 (Workshop Stage): Contemporary and/or Traditional Workshop with Richard Shindell, Tracy Grammer, Vance Gilbert, David Jacobs-Strain Saturday 5:00-6:20 (Workshop Stage): Fab Four Forever with the Kennedys, Tracy Grammer, Nerissa and Katryna Nields, Annie Wenz, Girlyman, We're About 9, Diane Ponzio, and EFO Sunday 3:05-3:50---Lucy's main stage set---and her set directly follows Richard Shindell's, which hopefully means both of them will be on stage most of the time from 2:10 to 3:50! And John Gorka's set is from 5:10 to 6, so if Lucy doesn't rush off, maybe she'll be back for that too... Benay ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2003 23:18:20 -0400 From: "Benay Bubar" Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy (in print) in my dreams Well, since my posting of Lucy's schedule for Falcon Ridge does not yet seem to have generated scads of excited discussion, I am going to post...well, something ELSE that won't generate discussion! But, see, I just happened to have The World's Most Pathetic Lucy-Related Dream the other night, and I've decided I have to share it because it is only here that anyone might even remotely feel my pain! Actually, contrary to all appearances, I rarely have dreams that have anything at all to do with Lucy...and Lucy herself, live, did not even APPEAR in this one. But The World's Most Pathetic Lucy-Related Dream went like this: It started off being a really good dream: I was in the library looking for books. I guess that's Pathetic Element #1 already, but the library is truly one of my favorite places to be. (My library-related evangelism is only slightly less fervent than my Lucy-related evangelism...I have dragged several acquaintances in to apply for library cards even though I'm more enthusiastic about it than they are!) Anyway, there I was in my dream, perusing the library shelves, when I saw it: a book about Lucy. And not just ANY book about Lucy---this wasn't Lipschtick, Gwen Macsai's book in which Lucy is discussed as her childhood friend (though in real life that's a good book, highly recommended). This was a huge, glossy, coffee-table-sized book all about Lucy. It was titled---and I guess I can't say I'm not making this up because this was my dream and clearly I DID make it up, but this was really the title in the dream---A Compendium of Previously Published, Authorized Photographs of and Interviews with Lucy Kaplansky. (OK, yes, Pathetic Element #2---heaven forbid I should come across UNpublished, UNauthorized Lucy-related material even in my subconscious, I guess!) Anyway, you'd think perhaps the whole "Previously Published, Authorized" thing would have made me lose interest, as that would probably mean I'd seen most of it before... but here was everything, an entire Lucy history, all in one place, and it was a very cool-looking book besides. I flipped through it quickly, scanned a few pages, and it looked wonderful; I couldn't wait to read it thoroughly! SO...well, you'd think I'd have sat right down and dug in, right? I mean, what better place to relax and enjoy a nonexistent encyclopedic book about one's favorite singer than in the (literal) library of one's dreams? But no. Here was where I had the sudden inkling, WITHIN the dream, that perhaps this WAS a dream...and I thought, oh, no, if this is a dream, I can start this great book, but I won't have time to FINISH it! The problem, my dream self decided, was that the dream book belonged to the dream library---and to surmount this, it wasn't enough just to borrow it, I had to have it in a form I could OWN! Somehow I hit upon the idea that if only I made a copy and held on tight to it, it would be mine for good and I could read it at my leisure! And yes, the dream library had a copier! Ah, dream logic... It was then that I spent a good LONG span of dream time---time that I could have used blissfully READING my fantasy Lucy book (if you're paying attention, this is Pathetic Element #3 in a major way)---on the boring task of making a complete, page-by-page (each page face down so I couldn't see it) color photocopy of the Compendium of Previously Published, Authorized Photographs of and Interviews with Lucy Kaplansky (and I must say, as you may have guessed from the oh-so-catchy title, it was a fairly long book). And I was just about to grab the large finished stack of photocopies off the machine with a sigh of satisfaction when...you guessed it. Awakening. With no Lucy book. And no color photocopies of the Lucy book either. Easy come, easy go. Sigh. But I must say (and this is doubtless Pathetic Element #4) I still really wish I'd gotten to read that darned book! I can only hope that should my subconscious ever treat me to a visit to the dream bookstore (which is hopefully just down the street from the dream library), I will manage to find a copy and, instead of waiting in line to buy it, sit down with a steaming cup of dream coffee to enjoy it while I can... The signal carries about a mile. So if you bring your boombox, Walkman or car radio, you can hear what's going on down at the Mainstage from up at your campsite while you're feeding the kids, taking a break or whatever. If you're volunteering, bring your radio and you don't have to miss Lucy or the other great mainstage acts. I need to get onsite and do a "signal survey" before I can announce what the FM frequency we use will be. It will definitely be posted on the Info Board when you get there, and the event staff will know ('cause they'll be listening!). See you there - the long term weather forecast is looking fantastic! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2003 21:32:14 -0700 From: "Susan Krauss" Subject: [lucy-list] Little Fox - Saratoga Lucy did another stellar show last night at the Little Fox in Redwood City. She had a bit of a crisis before the show - she locked her keys in the trunk of the car. She had her guitar but her show clothes - and more importantly - her lipstick was in the car. AAA came in about 1/2 hour and the tow truck driver - "he was like Russell Crowe in Gladiator - - he could do ANYTHING" opened the car in 10 seconds flat and so Lucy did not have to wear her mother's turquoise t-shirt on stage (and more importantly, as she noted, she's never not done a show without lipstick so we were spared that horror). I'll let Paul did the set list. She took a lot of requests (as she did Sunday night). I think I can remember the songs - just not in the correct order. She opened with Speaking with the Angels and then did Written on the Back of His Hand. She also did the new ones - The Thread, This is Home, Line in the Sand (Promised Land) and Every Living Thing. We did get Cowboy Singer (Dave Carter) and Grievous Angel (Gram Parsons) and Broken Things (Julie Miller) and 10 Year Night and a sizzling Scorpion. We got Don't Mind Me and This is Mine and Mary Magdalene (Richard Shindell) and When I Get to the Border (Richard Thompson) and Goodnight (Cliff Eberhardt). We got the Pi Song and a dad math story. She told the mom losing weight story. I got acknowledged from the stage which was nice. I talked to Lucy briefly on Sunday night (about the Rocky Mountain Folk Festival and Nanci Griffith's meltdown there a few years ago - Lucy was on stage singing harmony for part of that show). When we arrived last night she was pacing the sidewalk on her cell phone and when she was done she looked up and saw me and thanked me for coming to the show again. I asked if she was alright and she told me about the keys. While she was taking requests I yelled out "This Is Mine" (since I've never heard it live) and she said, "She was at the show Sunday night - she gets whatever she wants." It was pretty funny. She told a very funny show (the only clean joke from the recording of the new record - due February or March 2004) and I won't tell it here and spoil it for everyone but I've been telling everyone I know and everyone laughs. Let's see, back to Sunday (I posted the set list but was too tired to comment on the show). It was similar to last night's show - no set list though clearly she wanted to play all the new songs and 10 year night and had a few older songs in mind. There was a piano Sunday so we got Just You Tonight. And her two oldest friends in the world were at the show Sunday night (she's known them since they were 3 and one of them was maid of honor at her wedding) so that caused some interesting dynamics (like when one of them requested Jim Croce's "Roller Derby Queen" and Lucy said, "That's from 7th grade!." Oh, I told her last night that Sunday was a great show. Lucy said, "apparently my friends cried through the whole thing." I said, yes, I could see them from where I was sitting and they did cry a lot - they had a great time and were clearly very proud of their friend. Lucy also showed off her new muscles - in addition to losing weight she's been working out with weights and has very nice biceps. Did I miss anything Paul? Leanne? We get to see her again in September (yahoo). susan in alameda (hoping I lived up to Benay's high standards) ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V5 #147 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
