That is a heckuva deal. Will they be serving hotdish and bars nearby? Surely you are jesting, Matt. But "The Minnesota State Fair" has for over a century served as one of those cultural icons around here where many of our most charming cultural idiosyncracies get brought out of the closet and shamelessly paraded around for public view for ten days in the very final days of our summer. You can just wander around for hours and hours checking out the prizewinning domesticated animals (from pigs to rabbits to ducks) or baked goods, or quilts, or jams and jellies. You can meet those politicians running for statewide or federal office, eat deep-fried walleye on a stick, or talk "Minnesotan" unabashedly. It seems to be getting more and more challenging to transmit cherished elements of our culture to succeeding generations in this country because: a) we seem to move so far and so often and, b) everyone seems drawn to specialized media that cater to the tastes of particular sub-groups. The professional singer-songwriters (of which Lucy is one) seem genuinely committed to transmitting at least some small piece of "their historical roots" at every show. Witness Lucy opening shows with traditional gospel bluegrass numbers...or covering country western classics. They sincerely try to build bridges between genres and generations. It'll be interesting to see how many younger fans the Judy C. tour draws (younger fans who came of their own accord...and are not being dragged along by a parent!). It'll also be interesting to see how many songs Lucy gets to play when the show starts at 8:00 and she is just one of THREE warm-up acts for Judy. Still, it's my birthday and a rather festive atmosphere so it's still worth checking-out. Of course Falcon Ridge comes first! Whooeee!
