Well, in any case, it looks like Lucy's going to be on the radio today (2 p.m. here in NYC). Troubadour Thursday, July 03 2003 Musician and writer Scott Alarik has been writing about folk music in his new book, Deep Community: Adventures from the Modern Folk Underground, which examines the new incarnation of the American folk scene. He's joined by one such artist, the folk singer Lucy Kaplansky, who performs live in our studio. We also feature legendary songwriter Joe Ely, whose three-decade career has crossed the lines between rock, country and folk. It's found him on the road and on the stage with Bruce Springsteen, the Clash and his own group--The Flatlanders. Joe stops by with a handful of new songs and countless stories of a restless life. ========================================================= This e-mail message is intended only for the personal use of the recipient(s) named above. Thanks, Benay, for the heads-up. (I can picture your friend saying, "Isn't this about that singer you like.") I'll try to listen on WNYC's streaming audio. As long as I'm writing, good job reviewing Bridgeport! I can't vait to hear Lucy tell her short non-dirty ethnic joke. No deep revelations from anybody, only one live song, and probably nothing most of us on this list didn't already know...but a pleasant listen nonetheless. They probably archive the show too, but here are my notes for anybody who missed it and just wants to know what they said (sorry, no time to organize this into, say, complete sentences, but this was the general drift of it): discussion of the "underground" folk scene featuring Lucy and Scott Alarik, author of Deep Community: Adventures in the Modern Folk Underground Lucy: folk is "under the radar---completely separate from the pop music business...a thriving community that most people don't even know about" Alarik: music is "constantly breathing" older performers and newer generation--Ani DiFranco/Utah Phillips music as a conversation between musicians and fans quotes (from Utah Phillips, I think): "the only way to wind up with a million bucks in folk music is to start out with two [million]" "folk music is a living, not a killing" Lucy as an urban singer---folk music is more urban than anything else "you can call me 'Dr. Lucy' which I kind of like...I used to be a clinical psychologist...still am, I guess, just not practicing as one" (Alarik, in response: "critics are divided, Lucy!") Lucy: Folk music is looking for emotional truth...Land of the Living as a love song to New York Lucy performs Land of the Living...says her last time in the WNYC studios was Sept. 10, 2001 with something that never got aired after 9/11 songwriters' responses...birth of Land of the Living w/image of taxi drivers praying at airport, occurred to her in November...unplanned...just happened Alarik: pop mainstream misses the point about folk music's connection to instinct, the shared experience...the fans are the bosses, vs. mainstream music Lucy: in front of 200 people it's a conversation...intimacy and a shared experience you cannot have in a bigger environment musicians who have gone their own way---Gordon Bok (host plays part of a song of his addressed to a herring) Lucy: no, there's no more Cry Cry Cry...but a sense of community in folk..."some of my very good friends are singer/songwriters...genuine kind of friendliness and support that we offer each other" Alarik: audience is very much a part of that community..."fans like me who become the journalists, fans like Lucy who become the stars" success of O Brother Where Art Thou on a grassroots level; Alarik: Norah Jones coming from "the same kind of audience demand" but "[the mainstream music industry] wouldn't know how to mass-market somebody like Lucy or Gillian Welch" - ----- Happy 4th of July weekend, everyone... Thanks for the "notes" on the segment you heard. Sounds like it was a good exposure to those who don't know a thing about contemporary "urban" folk music. Scott's book "Deep Community: Adventures in the Modern Folk Underground" is outstanding. (Black Wolf Press) Check it out!
