I've never seen Rosanne live, although I've been an ardent admirer for years. She doesn't tour much, so I'm travelling from Omaha to see her. Yeah, she's getting closer to here than that, but seeing Dar open for her is a huge plus. Can't wait. My 32nd Lucy show, but first in almost a year! It was nice meeting up with the other Lucy-list folks there. I'm sure Benay has a wonderful review coming up soon. Some pictures I took, http://www.neatness.com/cgi-bin/gallery/gallery.cgi?Category=100286 Mike ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 May 2003 23:54:49 -0400 From: "Benay Bubar" Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy in Brooklyn-5/25 Well, today was a historic day. Lucy played for the first time ever in the magnificent borough of Brooklyn, New York. More importantly, she played for the first time in a location I could reach via a leisurely stroll from my apartment. (It was a 15-minute walk, and there was a bus I could have taken that passed me on the way that would have gotten me there faster, but I refused to get on...I was going to walk to this show no matter what!). Sharon and Dave and Elaine and Chris and I, the official Brooklyn/Bronx contingent of Lucy fandom, got to the Botanic Garden a couple of hours early (we met up with Mike later---it was good to see you, Mike!) and were able to wander around and enjoy the new version of spring with which nature has provided New York this year (wet...cold...wet...cold...later, when Lucy said onstage how lovely the garden was, someone told her she should come back in the spring, since this was clearly not it). Due to the periodically inclement weather, the show was moved from the outdoor cherry esplanade to the indoor auditorium at the garden. Preceded by a Cajun band, the Lost Bayou Ramblers, Lucy came on at 4:30. She was accompanied by guitarist Jon Herrington, a familiar face not seen with her (at least around here) in some time. The set list was as follows: Cowboy Singer Written on the Back of His Hand End of the Day The Thread Promised Land Ten Year Night I Had Something I'm Looking Through You (rockin'-est song this time, easily) This Is Home Willie (on keyboard) Land of the Living Don't Mind Me Turn the Lights Back On (pretty rockin' too) By Way of Sorrow Encore: The Kid Lucy sounded great and was dead-on with all the lyrics. The only negative aspect to the show was the fact that there were numerous very small children whom the venue had suggested could sit in front on either side of the stage. They were cute, which Lucy remarked upon, and some of them danced wildly, which Lucy also remarked upon and seemed to enjoy ("my first mosh pit!"), but Lucy is not a children's performer and her songs don't necessarily hold very small children enthralled. There was much chattering and intermittent shrieking and running; what might initially have been cute turned frustrating when some parents waited far longer than they should have to take the children outside. Lucy was the consummate professional through it all, never seeming to lose her concentration even when a shriek came mid-song, but sitting in the audience, even at a "free" show, it was too bad to have to contend with that level of noise, especially when it was clear that certain of the children would far rather have been elsewhere. Anyway, a fun way to spend an afternoon. And a delight to have it so close to home! Pondering my next Lucy travels (which won't be for some time, so it seems), Benay ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V5 #117 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
