I just got home from a Richard Shindell concert. The set list was similar, but not exactly the same. He did "Bleeker Street" and obviously some more songs of his because he was flying solo. The show was wonderful. Afterwards we hung out with Richard for a few minutes. The conversation turned to Cry3. He said that they probably won't be able to be a trio anymore because their lives and schedules are so busy... I said, "But Lucy did tell the story about running into you at the airport." He said, "But did she tell you that she had a bagel in her mouth when I saw her?" He said she had a cell phone in one hand, I think he said a cup of coffee or something in the other, and a bagel in her mouth. He saw her and thought, "That's the Lucy I know." Nerissa and Katryna nields.. asked Lucy to join them on the C3 version of I know what kind of love this is... i know that i have seen dar sing with them many times.. and i think the ONLY other time i saw this was at Falcon Ridge needless to say.. it was spectacular to have those three voices in all those different ranges.. Lucy added so much to this song... Lucy played Willie again in symphony space.. and it was an impeccible version of the song... the highlight was to see Nerissa in the wings.. watching lucy with amazement.. Katryna was visible was pointed out the young adults who were sitting in front of me.. clearly there for the Nields and they pointed out every Katryna sighting.. so to see Nerissa watching Lucy was fun.. THe encore was Lovely Rita with John Wesley harding, the nields and Lucy and it was fun to see them all involved in a different song.. Deni Bonet played Violin and Duke levine had a guitar solo.. there you go.. off the beaten path... Benay will be up soon.. she had a late party after the show.. and i am sure.. cant see the print of her TIMES yet... sharon ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 18 May 2003 19:12:43 -0400 From: "Benay Bubar" Subject: [lucy-list] more on Symphony Space 5/17 Yes, I'm here...at last. A word to the wise: Should you ever find yourself bolting from a show the moment Lucy finishes singing in order to attend a late-night beach-themed birthday party, then leaping into a cab and drastically overtipping the cab driver in relief at reaching your destination even though you are an hour later than you promised to be because the concert was four hours long...and should you finally arrive at the party exhausted and bewildered because you haven't eaten anything substantial in six hours...and should you not see much in the way of food or beverages until someone proffers a mai tai, a drink you've never tried but one that looks pretty and has fruit in it...do NOT drink the mai tai. It will significantly impede your ability to write a Lucy review, or do much of anything else, the next day. Anyway...Sharon touched on the major points of last night's show, so I will provide the set list. Because I like the Nields and I wrote their set list down, I'll give that one too: When I'm Here (not sure of this title; pretty sure it's NOT a Nields song) Haven't Got a Thing Jeremy Newborn Street I Know What Kind of Love This Is (They sang this with Lucy, after an explanation that Cry Cry Cry's version of the song was better than the original Nields version, which is true. And Sharon's right, Lucy added a great deal to the song. At some point, Nerissa broke a string on her guitar, and afterward Lucy brought Nerissa's guitar offstage and ran back onstage with her own guitar, which Nerissa proceeded to use for the rest of the set. Thus, this show was notable for the fact that Lucy's guitar did more time onstage than Lucy did!) Snowman Tailspin Mr. Right Now Easy People The Day I Let Glory Steer This Town Is Wrong This Happens Again & Again Gotta Get Over Greta Next came John Wesley Harding. I hadn't heard him before and his music didn't particularly appeal to me though he was funny, so he gets short shrift here, I'm afraid. Finally, Lucy: The Angels Rejoiced Written on the Back of His Hand End of the Day The Thread Promised Land (its NYC premiere...actually, I guess that was true for The Thread too) Ten Year Night I Had Something The Thief I'm Looking Through You This Is Home Willie (on piano...I couldn't see Nerissa watching from where I was, but I wish I had) Land of the Living (the first time in recent memory Lucy hadn't sung this one directly following This Is Home...which was good because hard as it must be to segue into the right frame of mind for Land of the Living, I've somehow never fully liked hearing those two songs right on top of each other) Encore: By Way of Sorrow Encore: Lovely Rita Metermaid (Lucy started the opening verse, then everyone else took turns...it was excellent) I will have more Lucy reviewing to do a week from today, when Lucy comes to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden---a show for which I am excited beyond belief because it is the first and probably only Lucy show EVER to which I, always so dependent on the whims of public transit and the kindness of friends with cars, am actually going to be able to WALK! To be able to take a 10-minute stroll on a Sunday afternoon and see Lucy live with the friends to whom I am already giving subtle, low-pressure hints ("you HAVE to COME!!!")...well, life just doesn't get much better than that. For now, back to nursing my still-receding headache from having gotten home at 4 in the morning.
