I'm pretty surprised Lucy played "The Border." I haven't seen that on too many lists. I just love it, though. It was one of my first Lucy songs as it is available on-line (I think as a clip to an NPR interview). The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. We had a beautiful, beautiful spring day & Lucy's first nice sunny day in Eugene ever which she commented on a few times! Lucy got to walk around Eugene with her husband and see the town on our lovely day. I got to meet Professor Litvin (Lucy's husband, Rick), finally. What a pleasure! It was wonderful chatting with him and my friends at my table & around the Cafe here & there during the 7-plus hours I was there. "Mr. Lucy" was pleased, if not, shocked, at my & my friends' attention and interest in him & not just talking about our star. I knew he & my friend Margaret would be able to chat about Ireland (Prof. Litvin taught in Ireland last year for several months) & Philly 2gether. My input was requested for the 2nd show & hence the "Grevious Angel" with Richard for the first time. Of particular interest to Lucy & the Professor is the brand new (she said) never-played-before-song "Promised Land." Feed back was requested from my friends & I afterwards. I think the standing ovation I and my friend Sara gave for "Promised Land" was a clue to our thoughts! It is a peace song, a political song, which resonated with us -- Sara is a pacifist, peace-activist. Professor Litvin wrote it originally in Ireland & the two are trying to finish it together. The "classic" suggestion here is "Shoot Out The Lights" by Richard and Linda Thompson, considered one of the great albums of the 1980's. It was also written at a time when their marriage was decaying into a serious shambles, and the tales of their concert chemistry, abuse, and antagonisms are legendary. I'm also fond of several songs on "Rumor and Sigh", many of which are well-represented on "Action Packed", which is sort of a best-of album from Thompson's years with Capitol records. That has more of a feel for who Richard Thompson *himself* is, as opposed to the piece of Richard/Linda history that is "Shoot Out The Lights". ObLucy bit: Lucy covered "Don't Renege On Our Love", a Richard/Linda song from "Shoot Out The Lights", on "Flesh and Bone". But I always thought it would be great to hear her cover "Did She Jump Or Was She Pushed". :-) -Todd - --------------+-------------------------+----------------+----------------- Todd Satogata | C-A Accelerator Physics | (631) 344-5826 | satogata@bnl.gov - --------------+-------------------------+----------------+----------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 May 2003 15:14:57 EDT From: Jsluckey@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] Review part 2 Dear Lucy-listers, So, the new album will be recorded this summer & should be released Feb./March, 2004. It will be called "The Thread" or "The Red Thread", debate between the two. Lucy wants Red, Rick, not. After the show, my remaining friends (this is like midnight or so), chatted outside the Cafe with Lucy, Professor Litvin & Richard Shindell. I did find out from Lucy that Amy Ray & Emily Saliers of Indigo Girls who met Lucy at Mountain Stage were hearing Lucy for the first time and they both came over & told Lucy they absolutely LOVED Lucy & her music and wanted her CDs. Amy Ray told Lucy that "This Is Home" made Amy weep! Those are some compliments coming from Indigo Girls! I got a snapshot of the "famous" Charleston, West Va. T-shirt she had to wear at Mountain Stage due to blizzard, lost luggage 2/16/03. I took several photos that night. Speaking of tears, The (Red) Thread song did it for me! Singing about learning to love from her 80-year old mother. I could not help but think of the loss of my mother when I was 10 (she was 44), and how I just do not know from/will never know that kind of relationship with my mother in my later years, but, I got over myself and had a good time anyhow. By-the-way my turning-79-Dad sure makes up for my loss as much as possible. Land of the Living still resonates solemly & sincerely. I can still picture the Statue of Liberty as my father, stepmother & I crossed the Verrazano Bridge in April. I figured out that Lucy transforms grief into comfort with her being while singing. I think Lucy was the last live outdoor music performance at the Twin Towers plaza. Somehow, this gives "Land of the Living" special meaning to me. Well, Benay, this is hard work isn't it? I will write more if I think of anything else, but I just about covered it all. Ooops, what Lucy wore: faded blue jeans, no leather, a nice shirt that was made of ?, looked soft up close, looked like a jean shirt/jacket on stage. Her hair was magnificant. She says she always has a good hair day in Eugene. She is thin, allright, but, healthy & smiling & happy with Rick and Mr. Shindell. By-the-way, the Homer, Anchorage, Fairbanks shows were spoken of highly by the Professor : warm crowds. Lucy complained about Alaska being cold. They both enjoyed Alaska and our warm, beautiful lush Eugene. Enjoy 2nite Sarah! Driving two hrs. to Portland as compared to walking just wo blocks to Cafe Paradiso will probably keep me at home 2nite. Much love to you all. Peace & Music. But I have read all the wonderful posts and I am so ready for a thrilling night. I have never actually never MET Lucy. I have always been with someone who kept me from that on a concert night... BUT tonight might be the night! Every time I share my excitement with friends, about going to a concert... well, its... WHO??? I guess I need to be pushier. But you are my friends now and can be happy for me. A few of my students remember when we shared Lucy in September and share my joy. (thank you Mitch!) Thanks for the excellent setlists and report on the shows. I am very envious that you heard Lucy do When I Get to the Border...I have yet to hear that one live from either her OR the non-Texan Richard Thompson. (And for the record, occasionally I do actually go and see artists whom Lucy has NOT covered. But I admit I've learned a lot through Lucy...which could be good or bad: The other day I was in the grocery store and the Bryan Ferry version of More Than This came on, and my split-second thought was that it was a cover of a Lucy song before I remembered that it was the reverse!) Hope you have a wonderful time tonight, Sarah And don't worry about the friends who refer to Lucy as "WHO?" They may never come to Lucy shows with you, but eventually, if you nurture them carefully, they will progress the way MY non-music friends have and will begin referring to Lucy as Your Singer and/or That Singer You Like. First they will ask, "So have you seen Your Singer lately?" Eventually, some will sidle up to you gleefully days or hours before Lucy is playing locally---a show to which you've had a ticket for weeks or months---and say in the tone of someone who is sharing a stupendously amazing secret: "Hey, I think I saw something about That Singer You Like---I think she was maybe playing somewhere around here sometime soon! Did you KNOW that?" They will look slightly crestfallen when you indicate that yes, you HAD actually managed to ferret out that information already and wild horses couldn't keep you away from the show they have mentioned. And then you will have to reassure them, quite truthfully, that it was still really, REALLY sweet of them to let you know. Anyway, we will look forward to the Portland report! I guess the big news is that Tracy Grammer played with Richard and Lucy... and it was phenomenal!! It sounded so good! I took notes, but that will have to wait. I did finally MEET Lucy and get a cd signed. I said hi from everyone, especially Benay and Joyce, and Lucy said to say hi to all of you. so feel warm and lucy-loved! now off to bed and my notes are waiting for transcription... zzzzzzzzzzzzzz Sarah ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V5 #107 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
