No more Lucy shows on which to report, but I did see Richard Thompson on Friday night for the first time. He is an incredible guitarist and has a band that has never seen an instrument it can't play with virtuosity. He only did one song that I recognized: Wall of Death. But it was a really fantastic show even without knowing the music beforehand. And along the way I learned something that was utterly shocking to me: Richard Thompson is NOT from Texas. Now, please understand that I had NEVER knowingly heard Richard Thompson before, or his music except as sung by Lucy (When I Get to the Border, Don't Renege on Our Love). And I'd never investigated Richard Thompson's history...I'd heard murmurings of "Sandy Denny" and "Fairport Convention," but as my exposure to the entire musical world started, barely, in 1992, I didn't (and still don't) have much understanding of their practical meanings. And somehow along the way I became absolutely, completely convinced Richard Thompson was from Texas. But I've decided that's not totally my fault. No, for engendering my drastic misconception of Richard Thompson, I blame... Lucy. Combined with the fact that she has also covered a lot of Steve Earle (who IS from Texas---I checked!) and the subliminal effect of the fact that When I Get to the Border comes RIGHT before Texas Blues on The Tide (and hey, the song is When I Get to the BORDER, after all, and that seems Texas- like---and sure people can write about Texas without BEING from Texas, but not everyone does)...I mean, it all seemed like pretty incontrovertible circumstantial evidence that Richard Thompson was from Texas, at least to someone who had never thought to actually find out for sure. Anyway, in practicality it shouldn't have mattered where Richard Thompson was from, except that when I saw him live and he opened his mouth to speak and instead of a Texas drawl, this ENTIRELY different accent came pouring out...well, my jaw dropped and never came all the way back up, and I'm not even sure I fully heard all the music in my lingering shock. So, as a public service to anyone else who's had the wool pulled over their eyes by Lucy on this matter, I will announce that Richard Thompson is...drumroll, please...BRITISH! I've been a fan of Richard's music for about 10 years now. And..... I get to see him in concert for the first time this weekend! There's a great complilation called "Beat the Retreat: Songs by Richard Thompson" that features performances by Shawn Colvin, REM, Bonnie Raitt, and others. There's also a FANTASTIC interview with him on NPR's site at the following location: http://discover.npr.org/features/feature.jhtml?wfId=1152176 Richard Thompson sings Britney Spears... Oh my. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 May 2003 11:16:06 -0500 From: "Timothy Bruce" Subject: [lucy-list] The "In Your Dreams" Folk Festival for 2003 IF this game is going to be revived for one more year, now is the time to do it! It seems that the Dar List has been listing their "Tp Ten" CD's for the past week or so. I felt we could pick this thread up once again (for a fourth year). Actually the FRFF line-up is pretty "dreamy" this year. I expect we will see a lot of those confirmed acts on these lists in coming days. My own list will follow. (By The Way, anyone can read the postings from the Dar List or the Lucy List without actually having your computer registered to post to these lists. Just go to: http://grassyhill.org/stax/lucy-list/index or http://grassyhill.org/stax/dar-list/index (Now, here is how I introduced the game back in 2000) "I just heard of this really cool folk gathering that's gonna happen this summer in Brigadoon, a tiny village in the Highlands of Scotland....It's so small, it's not even on the map!! No...no...there it is! Ooops! Where did it go just now? "The line-up is stellar, with a balance of both my favorite male and female "folk" singer-songwriters....about a dozen in all and all of whom have played summer folk fests in the recent past, but never all together!! (TIMOTHY'S LIST FROM THE 2000 VERSION OF THIS GAME....) 1) Lucy Kaplansky with Jon Herrington and Nina Gerber 2) Dar Williams with a back-up band 3) The Nields (do they count as ONE or TWO?) 4) Karen Savoca 5) Cheryl Wheeler below.) 7) Richard Shindell solo 8) Greg Brown 9) Ellis Paul 10) Peter Mulvey with Goody Goodrich 11) John Gorka (to sing with Lucy) 12) Steve Earle So you understand the rules of this game? A) Actual recent folk festival performers likely available this summer. B) Limit performers to a dozen or less. Limit it roughly to "folk". C) Keep it balanced. Try for roughly half male, half female. (It's a challenge!) D) Money is no object (we have hundreds and hundreds of $ to pay them!) "In the past, some folks have ignored one of the rules--an important one--that rule being to choose their dream performers from those who actually have been known to perform lately (hey, I'd like Joni Mitchell to be there, too! How about Jerry Garcia with Dave Grisman?) This was not meant to be a popularity contest (in which departed greats can be present), but rather an excercise to discover who among us are most excited about which performers out there actually performing right now, because of; A) their charm, B) the quality of their live shows or C) the strength of a new CD they have out. "If I go to a multi-stage festival this summer and see one of the new names from this exercise on the program, I'd be very inclined to stroll over to that stage and check them out." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 May 2003 15:21:10 EDT From: BrainCC@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] The revered Richard T You could easily have been confused by the fact that the blessed St Richard has been living over your side of the great water for some time (and I think he's still there, despite a recent UK tour). Definitely born and raised in London, first appearance on vinyl in '68 (I think) on the Fairports' first LP. So, 35 years on and still a genius! Enjoy his sounds Brian ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 May 2003 15:34:57 -0400 From: "benruth@earthlink.net" Subject: RE: [lucy-list] The In Your Dreams Folk Festival for 2003 Hmmmmm...not necessarily in order of individual preference (except, well, the obvious)... 1. Lucy, half with Duke Levine and half solo (but with both guitar and piano, used liberally) and singing with others below when possible 2. Dar Williams...um...solo, I think, though band's good too 3. Susan Werner 4. Nerissa and Katryna Nields 5. Patty Larkin 6. Richard Shindell 7. John Gorka 8. Kris Delmhorst 9. Cheryl Wheeler 10. Buddy and Julie Miller 11. Nanci Griffith 12. Emmylou Harris 13. Patty Griffin 14. Tracy Grammer 15. Ellis Paul By Timothy's rules I'm over the limit and light on male performers, I'm afraid, but can't figure out how to fix either problem...so be it for now...
