Ha, it's not just springlike, Benay, it's (I know this is hard to believe after such a winter.) spring! I had a great time Thursday evening. To my surprise, I even enjoyed the drive to Owings Mills, a suburb to the northwest of Baltimore. DC Beltway traffic was barely moving so I abandoned it and took back roads angling north and east through Maryland farm country. After briefly getting lost at a large shopping mall, (The directions said, "stay in the middle lane" but there were only two!) I made it to the Gordon Center for the Performing Arts about ten minutes before show time. I especially enjoy Lucy's backup vocals so it was good to see her with Richard Shindell. Lucy and Richard were funny together--whispering to each other and getting pretty silly near the end of the show. Lucy told the story of agreeing to sing on Richard's first "album" before she knew him or his music. She says she commented after the recording that it actually sounded good. Richard remembers this differently--he says Lucy's comment was, "This actually doesn't suck." I'd been thinking Owings Mills was far enough off Lucy's beaten path that I'd be the only list reader there. So it was another pleasant surprise when I recognized Libby in the lobby after the show and Libby introduced me to Benay (who says she's "only" seen Lucy in six states) all the way from Brooklyn. I still haven't heard Libby sing and she didn't have any of her own CDs with her to sell. She did have one homemade disk with her and she nervously gave it to Lucy. Libby, I hope Lucy gives you good feedback (not like the kind from Richard's guitar) and that you'll post some of it to this list. Time to go. I look forward to reading about Harrisonburg and the conflicting concert with Susan Warner. Safe travel to all. What is it? (Hmm, I wonder if I can stump Sharon. I know if RockinRonD is around these parts he knows the answer.) The direct link to the article in the LI Press is .
