The Donnas---Donna Myers and her friend Donna (not to be confused with her OTHER friend Donna) were my companions for the journey, and we ventured forth nice and early...which was lucky, because all of New Jersey seemed to be swamped with massive rainstorms. As we drove toward Wayne, it rained harder...and harder...and harder, until it was difficult to see anything on the road. Of course, I was wearing my leather jacket, with no hood, and even an umbrella was not entirely helpful in this kind of rain. (I wonder why I have so MANY memories of bad weather before Lucy shows. Probably because of the law of nature that says that no matter how presentable I try to make myself before a concert, if there is any possible way for circumstances to conspire to cause me to end up looking disheveled and ridiculous by the time I actually see Lucy---like getting drenched in a rainstorm before the show, for instance---that is how it will be.) The auditorium at William Paterson was a nice one, and we found ourselves with first-row seats...luckily, this was actually the second row, as they wisely did not seat anyone in the VERY first row of seats, which would have put anyone sitting there close enough to the stage to allow more thorough inspection of the artists' pores than anyone would have enjoyed! Anyway, as with the other Women in Folk shows, Susan Werner performed first...but this time, with Patty Larkin subsituted for Toshi Reagon, Lucy came on second, before the intermission, with Patty afterward. Susan did her usual good selection of songs---including standards like Time Between Trains, Barbed Wire Boys, and Big Car, plus a riveting song called Some Other Town that I hadn't heard before although knowing Susan it's probably not new, just unrecorded---and ended her set with what she said was the most "diva"-like song she could think of, La Vie en Rose. Patty Larkin played guitar mesmerizingly and was completely sold out of CDs by the end of the show. As for Lucy, her set was as follows: Cowboy Singer Written on the Back of His Hand Ten Year Night The Thread Scorpion End of the Day This Is Home Land of the Living By Way of Sorrow Pretty much like her other Women in Folk sets...except, astute readers will notice, for that title listed between Ten Year Night and Scorpion. No, it's not some obscure cover. The Thread---that's what she thinks is the title---is a NEW Lucy song. Not-finished-yet, lyrics-up-on-the-microphone-stand new. Having only heard it once, I'm reluctant to comment on it too extensively, let alone try to quote many lyrics---one can't focus on memorizing lyrics on first listen to a song, one just has to get one's bearings and experience it first. But overall, it seems to be about connections with an aging parent and the love and longings and losses therein..."the thread" being symbolic of that connection, though the thread idea was someone mutedly embedded in the lyrics. The chorus went something like "When your heart is empty, I'll fill it for you/I'm the girl who learned to love by watching you." Anyway, I think The Thread may be my favorite of the new songs to date...not to mention providing one intriguing title possibility for the next CD...and hopefully she will continue performing it so we can get to know it better. The end of the concert featured the return of Lucy, Patty, and Susan to the stage together to do another knock-'em-dead rendition of Angel of the Morning---Patty, of course, hadn't been involved in the other performances of this song, but Lucy and Susan apparently got her into it and she even added one of her great guitar solos to the mix. After wild applause, the three of them followed up with Take Me to the River, which got such an uproarious standing ovation that after they left the stage they were compelled to come back again just to bow again together (which I guess meant they didn't have another song prepared---they would have certainly had the audience enthusiasm for one or two more group numbers). Another fine evening was had by all (well, ME...and I presume others too!). Abbreviated as the group billing has made Lucy's sets, I think I will miss the Women in Folk shows...I hope there will be more like them in the future. I have since learned that she has been playing this tune (and a few others by her dad) for some time now. My question for the group is this: is this song commercially available somewhere? If not, does anyone know where I might obtain a copy of Lucy performing it in concert? Thanks, Ken P.S. When I saw her, she performed the tune a cappella. Does Lucy ever perform it with guitar or piano accompaniment? _________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 Mar 2003 00:22:12 +0200 From: Dierk Schlie Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Song About Pi Hi Ken, just put the version [with important intro and outro explanations by Lucy] from Club Passim last May on the web, it's at http://www.yellow-tigerduck.de/downloads/lucy.html I think it's not available, but the other list members will know that for sure ... The song was just as good as I remembered it! You have a very cool site. Maybe someday you could post "Dad's Alphabet Song," which sounds interesting too! Please let me know if I can ever return the favor. If you're interested, I have several Deb Talan shows (as well as some of her out-of-print studio stuff) that I would be happy to copy for you.
