But in my defense, I have really not been home and at the computer very much...I was too busy with the shows, and then with work, to actually WRITE about the shows. And, in all honesty, a weekend like this one was, of seeing Lucy along with other people, is a lot harder to review than a single Lucy show. I can't exactly do separate reviews of the Women in Folk shows in Rahway, Long Branch, and Stony Brook...in all cases, Lucy wore the same thing (new brown jacket), came on at the same point in the show (after Susan Werner's and Toshi Reagon's sets, and an intermission) and sang very close to the same things. Her set list from Rahway, the first night, was: Cowboy Singer Written on the Back of His Hand I Had Something Ten Year Night Don't Mind Me This Is Home Land of the Living By Way of Sorrow The other two nights Lucy's set list was exactly the same, except that Scorpion and End of the Day were added into the middle. The most notable thing about Lucy's set specifically was that she had COMPLETELY rewritten I Had Something...the lyrics were the same, for those who have heard it, but the music was totally different. It's hard to describe the change---the song is surely still not a rocker, but it did get revved up some. It sounds more like a Lucy song than it did before, which to me is a good thing...I like the new music better. The most notable part of the shows overall was the end, when Lucy and Susan and Toshi pulled together their surprise rendition of Angel of the Morning. It was not a song I ever would have expected to hear from any of them, but it was absolutely gorgeous all three times that they did it, such that I wished I had broken the rules and sneaked in a tape recorder. The last night, in Stony Brook, they also all sang The Water Is Wide, and that was lovely too. On Saturday morning, Sharon and Elaine and I also saw Lucy's Symphony Space performance in the Joni Mitchell tribute. Yes, she did come on a good hour earlier than planned; luckily, thanks to my having showed up at 9:15 panicked about being late (there were five people in line at that point for the 10:30 opening!), we were well into our tenth-row seats already by the time Lucy came on. She seemed to have some problems with HER sound in the monitors, as evidenced by a little barely visible emphatic gesturing (the trouble with a show done live on the radio is that they can't hang around adjusting these things, or actually talk about what the problems are---it all just has to go on). Still, from the audience her performance sounded fantastic. I am now in love with both Carey and Willie as songs, and---thanks to Sharon and Elaine---I'm stocked up on Joni Mitchell music at long last! Thanks to an immensely kind Lucy-lister, I was able to acquire an official Lucy Kaplansky Ten Year Night T-shirt last week...only a few years after it was a hot (well... purchasable!) item. I layered it over other outfits for the entire weekend, figuring it was fitting to do so since when ELSE was I going to see Lucy four times in one weekend? (And OK, I was just psyched to finally HAVE a shirt!) But sometime before saying hi to Lucy for the third night in a row, I got to thinking that probably there's a page in the folk singers' handbook, in the When a Fan Becomes a Stalker chapter, that says "When they start wearing the shirt ALL the time, watch out!" Lucy didn't look particularly alarmed to see me, WITH the Lucy shirt, three nights in a row...and even more to her credit, she didn't look totally SICK of seeing me, either. Still, I probably ought to give the shirt a rest when I see her again...um...this Saturday. No Rick, on any of the three nights. He was much missed. He ought to know we tristate area folks EXPECT to see him! I guess he's allowed a life, though. Not a thorough review, I know...but nonetheless, I must wind this up...and so we have reached the acknowledgements section, which must include great thanks to the concert companions who made these three nights (and one morning) of Lucy performances so enjoyable, not to mention providing food and transportation and a night's rest at key points in the odyssey! Sharon, Elaine, Chris, Donna (and her cohorts the Soccer Moms), Renee (and aunt Carolyn), and Todd and Jen (among the finest of dinner companions, and Lucy virgins no more!). Apologies to anyone not included here who should have been; I am still not fully caught up on sleep! Ever since I first heard Lucy sing this song last year, a part of the melody reminded me of a song by someone else but I could never figure out the song or the singer. It's been percolating in my head all this time, and now, just as Benay tells us Lucy has changed the music, I realize it reminded me of Nanci Griffith's Gulf Coast Highway.
