Lucy's performance was outstanding covering Joni. Lucy did go on earlier than scheduled because a couple of the performers (Stretto and Flanigan as I recall) scheduled to perform before Lucy did not show up on time. Some were saying it was the anti-war protest tying up the city but I couldn't confirm that. It was fun seeing Lucy there, even though it was short, after seeing her about 12 hours earlier in Rahway. Take care all. The pairing of three great women singer songwriters Susan Werner, Toshi Reagon, and Lucy Kaplansky is pure genius and a no brainer . Susan Werner opened both nights and explained on each the way the shows work is she. "Starts things off saying strange things then Toshi comes out and turns your world upside down the Lucy comes out to explain to you just what took place" Because of the format the length of each set is limited so each performer sort of did a hits melody which is just fine. Susan in her set included TIME BETWEEN TRAINS, SORRY ABOUT JESUS, ST.MARY'S OF REGRET, SHADE OF GREY and in keeping in her tradition of not allowing you to leave for the night without at least one piano song to tug at your heart MAYBE IF I SANG COLE PORTER. During the set she did mention that she almost was not able to make it out east because on Thursday night she was in her hometown of Chicago and went out to watch and give some moral support to the Anti War protesters and almost got arrested mainly for being in the wrong place at the wrong time but luckily she was allowed out of the area to go home. For Toshi each night produced a completely different set feel but because I am not familiar with the song titles of her work I am unable to list them here I can only say that both night were great. Friday's set was filled with a lot of funk and upbeat sing and sway along songs. And on Saturday it was more mellow and gospel sounding music Toshi also mentioned how the current word situation made everyone feel so uneasy and that there should be some common sense used within the security concern of our nation. Closing the show was Lucy what can you say about Lucy that has not already been said dozens of times already she is just so dynamic on stage and pretty too. On Both nights she opened with the late Dave Carter song COWBOY SINGER I'm sure Dave was looking down and smiling from ear to ear. Included in her set was WRITTEN ON THE BACK OF HIS HAND, The powerful and most poignant at this particular time in our history LAND OF THE LIVING, and DON'T MIND ME. The surprise and highlight on both nights was for the final song of the night all three women walked on stage together each to her own microphone holding a lyric sheet in there hand with Susan the only one with a guitar Susan then began playing cords stepped up to her microphone and began singing "There'll be no strings to bind your hands" Everyone in the house at that moment knew that was the opening line to Chip Taylor's ANGEL OF THE MORNING IT WAS incredible I never heard the song sound so good it earned then a standing ovation both nights and they tightened it up for the second night and sounded even better. Apparently what had happen was earlier in the day while backstage Toshi was singing the song to herself with Susan and Lucy nearby. Susan then dispatched one of her people to get on the internet using the computer at The Union County Arts Center to download the words. And the rest I guess is history because I overheard more than one person beside myself telling each of the girls "You three have to record that" I hope they do. I cannot wait for it to get airplay on FUV and think "Hey I was there when that song was born" "Truth like Beauty is in the eyes of the Beholder" (Elim Garak) ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V5 #68 ****************************** This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
