Tracey and Joan and Lucy and Richard.. for those of us in the greater NY areas.. Lucy and Richard are in LAWNG ISLAND together and Joan isnt any closer than Stamford CT on 3/30...but the Tracey and Richard show at the Knitting Factory.. Slams right up against Lucy and Susan and PATTY Larkin in Wayne NJ... on 3/29. i only report this as Jess posted those dates to the LUCY list and in fairness to the artist.. her show in NJ that competes with the richard/tracey show in town needs to be mentioned as a viable option that night... sharon who doesnt know where she will be that night... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Mar 2003 08:01:43 -0500 From: "Benay Bubar" Subject: [lucy-list] concert clashes, and TV date Sharon wrote: > the > Tracey and Richard show at the Knitting Factory.. Yeah...sigh...one of the all-time biggest Concert Clashes, right up there with having had to miss the Nields and EFO in Peekskill and Cheryl Wheeler in Mamaroneck to see Lucy in West Creek on 2/1...and then there was the time in 2001 when Lucy and Dar almost had competing area dates until Lucy's got switched. Still no question of where I'm going to be on 3/29 though (for me, Lucy always wins). By the way, I am still under the impression that IF my hair highlighting escapade is to appear on the small screen, it will be this Thursday morning (3/13) on Good Morning America (between 7 and 9 a.m. EST). I make no promises that it will even be on or that it will be anything much if it IS on, but that's as much info as I have. Dave, You cannot overlook the obvious facts that 1) this is in many respects a "reunion of past favorites" FRFF, as they have previously stated was their intention for their 15th year anniversary; 2) CRY CRY CRY may have died in January, 2000 as you say but wasn't the lone reunion show July of 2000, with a full hour set at FRFF 2000? Finally, 3) FRFF added an entire DAY to their schedule this year....so there should be plenty of room in the schedule for all three to get a solo set and still have some time left to work with. Of course none of this means that they WILL agree ahead of time to a set as a trio, but it strongly points to the possibility! Timothy in south Minneapolis (P.S. Unfortunately, Kay and I will be missing FRFF this time around ... a little matter of a wedding and a honeymoon are conspiring to rob us of vacation time and excess finances! However, I will be glad to receive Minnesota's finest export (whatever that may be) at our next encounter! Does this remind anybody of a certain scene in "Singin' In The Rain" where the voice track gets out of synch with the movie? Minnesota's finest export right now is probably Garrison's Keillor's weekly variety show. I'll try to fit it in a bottle. (Just a final note: I don't think ANY of us should turn into whining fans about this matter in our meet-and-greets with these three in the coming months. (I, for instance, get to see all three of them in the space of six weeks this Spring). For us to hear their decision and then whine about it in front of them would be VERY unbecoming the great fans we all strive to be! Agreed?) When Lucy and John Gorka are in the same vicinity, Lucy MUST sing with John and John MUST sing with Lucy. It is required. No argument, no discussion...it just has to be. I thought the Kuumbwa show was fabulous (and I can't believe that I didn't see you John! I was sitting with Sue.) Anyway, lots of covers (but not Northern Cross) - By Way of Sorrow, Broken Things, Cowboy Singer, What's So Funny 'Bout Peace Love & Understanding (with killer guitar by Nina Gerber), Willie (on piano), Someday Soon....more will come to me. I've been having email problems since the show and have to slog through a ton of email before I lose access again so I don't know if anyone posted a set list (Paul?). I didn't think Lucy looked sick or gaunt - definately thinner (even thinner than she was in December (or was that November) when I saw her in Berkeley). Her voice was a little different but I loved it - and felt like she was very present in her emotions for each song. She talked about doing the Joni Mitchell tribute in a couple of weeks and the influence Joni & Judy Collins had on her life. I did talk to her briefly after the show - someone mentioned a Fast Folk show in Boston and I told her that I attended all the Fast Folk shows in NYC - she was surprised and said there were some amazing shows - I agreed. I also told her that I too listened to Judy Collins a lot when I was 15-16-17 and that must explain why I liked Lucy the first time I heard her (sometime in 1982 or 1983) - we had the same music sensibility. She thanked me for coming back to talk to her. Mom and Dad weren't there but that was nice for a change as while I like Dad a lot, it's a different show when he performs with Lucy (which we get at every Berkeley show). Anyway, one of the best Lucy shows I've ever seen. susan in alameda ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Mar 2003 21:51:20 -0500 From: "Benay Bubar" Subject: [lucy-list] horizons > Ya know, one thing to think about is that if you've seen a performer lots of > times, sometimes it's cool to occasinally take a pass and open the horizons > to other artists! Lucy's around NYC alot, and Tracy is hardly ever there. > She sure could use everyones support!! And I'm sure she puts on a great show > to boot. With Dave Carters's songs, how could it be anything else? Actually, my fellow NY music fans can attest that I do see and enjoy a number of other artists aside from Lucy (in the last few weeks, Dar Williams, Patty Larkin, and Shawn Colvin, with Susan Werner coming up this weekend). It's not as if Lucy is doing 365 shows a year in the area, so whatever happens when there's a conflict, there's still LOTS of room for "open horizons." I've seen Richard multiple times and was also a fan of Dave and Tracy, whom I saw together several times, and I certainly support Tracy still and would absolutely love to go to see her should she come back to NY on a different day. It just happens to be my preference to see Lucy wherever and whenever I am ABLE to see Lucy; each show is different to me even if the songs she performs are similar, and I always have a wonderful time. Other people may make different choices, and that's fine. By and large, I think the way all this started was just that it tends to be list etiquette (on all the lists I know of) not to heavily promote on a given list concerts that, temporally and geographically, might compete with those of the artist around whom the list is based. Probably this is not too big an issue for Wayne, NJ vs. NYC...likely it's fair to say I'm in the minority of New Yorkers who would likely plan to head all the way out to Wayne that night in ANY case...so whatever anyone says here, most of the NJ people will go to see Lucy and most of the NYC people will go to see Richard and Tracy. (Anyway, I am not too sure that the Lucy-list has that much power to influence ticket sales!) Still---although I certainly hope their show does well and I'm quite sure it will---even if I decided that I was going to see Richard and Tracy on 3/29 and wanted to encourage others to go to that specific show, I probably wouldn't do so on this particular list except by saying---as I will say---that for those in the NYC area who really CAN'T get to Wayne that night to see Lucy and Patty Larkin and Susan Werner, the Richard and Tracy show would be an excellent alternative. On an unrelated note...surely most if not all of you are on Lucy's announcement list, but in her letter for this month (I'm glad she's back to letters...her commentary in recent months had seemed a little less chatty, and I'd missed the chattiness) she said her Mountain Stage appearance will be broadcast the week of April 11th. One month from today! Set your tape recorders! (Whoops, can't do that...odd how most tape recorders don't provide any VCR-like function...sometimes that would come in handy.)
