It is HAILING in Brooklyn, folks. Actually raining and snowing TOO, I think...but there's hail in there. And I am marching forth (actually, "marching sixth" now, right, Gerry?) to highlight my hair in potentially public view. Well, if should look a little more...um, FROSTED...than is intended, it won't be MY fault. HAIL. Really, now. I wouldn't even have made that one up. Are there any listers in that part of the state? For those out of the area, it is a farming community among other things and not really known as an artistic hotbed. But it is known for being off the chart HOT for much of the year. If you eat raisins/onions/garlic/tomatoes there's a good chance they came from the area. But I don't know it well either. Maybe there is a whole side of it that I don't know about. I am not sure of the meteorological principles, but you need lots of atmospheric disturbances/changes in temperature/lightining and thunder/etc. for hail. Hail is rain that, in layperson's terms, rises and falls (and freezes) repeatedly before becoming so heavy that it falls to earth. Given today's atmospheric conditions, I suspect what it was, was sleet (not to be confused, of course, with freezing rain). The Weather Channel might not have called it hail---but I don't get the Weather Channel, and so I'm going with Webster's, in which hail is "precipitation in the form of small balls or lumps." And by THAT definition, those THINGS that were bouncing and skittering on my air conditioner when I looked out my window this morning were...hail! Not hailSTONES, I admit...but hailGRAINS, at least. Rain, even partially frozen rain---that's what Webster's says sleet is---does not skitter as far as I'm concerned. The beauty of the rain may be how it falls (courtesy of Dar) but the beauty of the hail is how it skitters.
