There are two new factors to consider: A) This is an ANNIVERSARY year and they are beefing up the line-up with past festival favorites, and B) They are adding a whole day to the festival up-front so last year's advice to arrive Thursday is probably no longer valid. I, like many other Dar-Campers, feel it's most comfortable and relaxing to arrive the afternoon before. We all go out to eat at the diner that first night. But as Dar Camp Dar is quite hilly terrain, we are not exactly claiming the "top real estate" on the grounds at that time. Do you want "flat AND convenient"? For that, I would need to have someone from the lowlands chime in. What I DO know about the lowlands is that when I drive through them on my way to Dar Camp Dar, I see most all of the lowlands either tented or "staked-out" waiting for friends tents to arrive. Anybody know when THOSE folks happened to arrive? Of course, if time is no object for you, volunteering for official "set-up" duties is one way to get a top-notch spot and meet a lot of friends right off. Not done that yet either, but others have, like Graham and Becky. Glad to see that I'm not the only one daydreaming about this!.... I have always arrived the first day of the festival (traditionally Friday, this year the first day will be Thursday as the festival has been expanded a day). My wife and I travel from the west coast and our connections have always been such that arriving the night before at Long Hill Farm was just not possible. This has not affected our camping very much, because we camp at CampDar, a camp founded by members of the Dar Williams mailing list. A number of people from the Lucy list camp there as well. I would prefer to arrive the day before the music starts as there are lots of fun gatherings the night before including a Nields Nook spaghetti dinner that sounds like a blast. Also, arriving midday Friday the past two years has really cut into my seeing the new artist showcase. Pitching one's tent, meeting and greeting people, as well as getting oriented to the festival grounds, especially the first year takes a lot of time. There are three areas for camping, lower camp, upper camp and middle camp. Lower camp is very convenient to everything and is off to the side of the main stage. This area tends to fill up the quickest. Upper camp is on the top of the hill above the festival site. It can be a hike between the stages and upper camp, but LOTS of people camp up there. Middle camp is a little trickier, as it is on the hillside and tends to be on an angle. However, I camp here because this is where campdar is. Last year we found a spot in campdar that was on flat ground and far enough away form the song circle that my wife was able to sleep (suzi and sharon, you should have pitched your tent near ours, i still feel bad about initiating a 5:00 am Stairway to Heaven sing along right outside your tent). There is always a place to camp as far as I know. I would consider camping for the fun that ensues before the festival actually begins. Camping has lost some of it's charm for me. I would still consider it but more often than not I come in and leave. Falcon Ridge is unique in that Long Hill offers three distinct areas in which to camp. I remember Old Songs camping was on a race track in Altamont. It was flat but very much removed from the music. People would still play fiddles well into the night which was very nice. I do miss some aspects of camping but usually day-trip or stay at a motel. Thanks for your observations...
