I've only just joined the list, so I'm really sorry if this has been discussed a zillion times, but when Lucy came the the UK in the summer(Jazz Cafe in Camden on the off chance that anyone else was there!) she played a song that she wrote as a response to September 11th. She said she'd played it lots in the US but never before in the UK and it was the most beautiful, heartbreaking song that encapsulated all the fear as well as all the hope. Does anyone know what it's called and better yet how I might get hold of lyrics/a recording? It's been haunting my entire family since we heard it and I'd love to hear/read it again?! Lovely to meet you all! love & stardust, Gem ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jan 2003 15:01:53 -0800 (PST) From: Benay Bubar Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Hello & 9/11 song Welcome to the list, Gem! The song is Land of the Living, and lyrics are below. No recording yet, though I guess there used to be a snippet of Lucy's performance of it on the CBS Early Show up on the Internet (don't know whether that's still available or not). It should show up officially on Lucy's next album...whenever that is. Benay Late afternoon, back in New York town Waking up as the wheels touch down Pick up my guitar and walk away Wish I was going home to stay Line of taxis, I wait my turn Tar and asphalt, exhaust and fumes Beside the road on a patch of ground Taxi drivers are kneeling down 'Neath the concrete sky I watch them pray While the people of the world hurry on their way I think they're praying for us all today And the stories that fell from the sky that day This is the land of the living This is the land that's mine She still watches over Manhattan She's still holding onto that torch for life Back home fire's still burning, I can see it in the air Pictures of faces posted everywhere They say "Hazel eyes and chestnut hair Mother of two, missing down there" I pass the firemen on duty tonight Carpets of flowers in candlelight And thank you in a child's scrawl Taped to the Third Street firehouse wall There's shadows of the lost on the faces I see Brothers and strangers on this island of grief There's death in the air but there's life on this street There's life on this street This is the land of the living This is the land that's mine She still watches over Manhattan She's still holding onto that torch for life Got in a taxi, said "Hudson St. please" He started the meter and he looked at me I glanced at his name on the back of his seat And I looked out the window at the ghost-filled streets I noticed cuts on his hand and his face And I said "You're bleeding, are you okay?" He said "I'm not so good, got beat up today And I'm not one of them no matter what they say I'm just worried about my family My wife's in the house and she's scared to leave" And I didn't know what to say Didn't know what to say But I said a prayer for him anyway This is the land of the living This is the land that's mine She still watches over Manhattan She's still holding onto that torch for life Holding on for life ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jan 2003 15:11:50 -0500 From: fair325@juno.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Hello & 9/11 song Hello Gem, nice to read you, I believe you are refering to the song "LAND OF THE LIVING". If I am wrong, I apologize in advance. It is a dark and haunting song full of indelible images most people would love to shed from their psyches, the event that is , not the lovely song. I'm now typing with a mascara smudged face! Thank you so, so much everyone who just sent links and mp3 offers and lyrics (thank you Benay, the mascara's your fault!). I could not believe you all replied so quickly and I really had forgotten how amazing the song is. It's the 'She's still holding onto that torch for life ' line that brings out the tears and the goosepimples. Words do not do it justice and anyone associating Lucy with the words absolute genius would not be accused of crazy talk. Thank you so much. Truly, you cannot imagine how touched i was that you all replied so quickly and with such evident adoration for lucy! I'm now downloading the song, so I think preparation for a total emotional overload is in order! Thank you everyone! A little off topic but wasn't there a plan at one point in time to build four towers as a replacement to the two? I think I heard something along those lines in the UK papers. By the way - I like the Ozzy quote but isn't the line "millions of people living as foes"? Sorry to nitpick. - Richie In a message dated 23/01/03 15:21:37 Pacific Standard Time, Sdgold60@aol.com writes: > seems like land of the living is the hot topic of the day.. and Gems' > welcome > > i have just come home from a frozen day in lower manhattan where i have had > > the pleasure and pain once again to find myself near the site of the World > Trade Towers.. > the cold and winter makes the space more desparate than all of the other > seasons > with 14 degree weather in NY.. there ARE less people on the streets and the > > tourists > still survive... > > there are now 7 i think... projects or draftings of replacements for the > trade center > and i have been reading up on them in the paper and in the New Yorker ( so > i > am behind in my reading of the New Yorkers) and i have been interested in > the > blending of art and memorials and gardens and The use of space.. its been > facinating... > and while i was over the brooklyn bridge.. i caught sunset with the statue > of > liberty > in the harbor.. > > Lucy just nailed the feeling of having the torch.. still watching over > manhattan... > > so back to brooklyn.. i went... to warm up in some way... > > sharon > > crazy, hey that's how it goes > millions of people living, I suppose > maybe, it not too late > to learn how to love and forget how to hate. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 23 Jan 2003 18:36:22 EST From: Sdgold60@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] the statue of liberty still shines on...
