Ah, those were the days! I'm surprised I did not see Lucy there in the parking lot! (BTW, Alpine Valley was where I cut my festival camping "teeth" during my hippie-dippy decade. And it makes FRFF look like the lap of luxury! Very few amenities of any kind (food, showers, ice) it was essentially tented tailgating on grass for three days. Now they have goons who forcibly clear the parking fields after each show. Falcon Ridge in contrast is just the kindest, most compact, best organized, and "nicest" festival going (and I'm from Minnesota so I know "nice"!) Does that sound too much like a "plug"? I have camped at only one better called Old Songs Festival in Altamont, NY. It is smaller but definitely as good. I prefer to stay off grounds and join the folks at any festival. My days of camping out were Ok but now I would rather have comfortable solitude at night. Sharing the joys of music is fine but there comes a time for everything and sleeping is one of them. Warren Zevon Camp Dar (which is where lots of Lucy-Listers wind up pitching tents) is just so darn convenient. I pitch my tent right behind the line that defines the mainstage SEATING area. If I were so inclined, I could watch the mainstage performers through my tent screen! But nicer than that is not having to REMEMBER and CARRY everything you will need for the whole day of music (which is about 12-14 hours on-stage and another 4-6 overnight). Even other user-friendly festivals cannot usually make the claim that all stages, parking, food, showers, tenting, and late night jams are all contained in the same compound. So if I need to add another layer, or fetch sunscreen, or change a sweaty shirt (who, me?) or have a snack back at my tent, it is only about 200 steps away. I've become quite fond of that. Besides, I only see most of these (list) folks once a year at best and pulling out after the show would mean I'd have to talk in their ear during sets, which many find taboo. More "level-headed" fans tend to camp up on the TOP of the hill, where it is....er....flat. But it is a bit further away as well. (Dreaming of summer already because winter FINALLY struck us here in Minnesota....below zero windchills and, finally, some snow.) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 10 Jan 2003 21:54:19 -0000 From: "Dave McKay" Subject: [none] John (in London U.K.) wrote: > I've learnt all about Lynn Miles, Susan Werner, Mark Erelli, Kris Delmhorst etc.through the list. > Thanks to everyone.... It was summer, 1976. At the Majestic Theatre, Corvallis, Oregon, October 21, 2000, Lucy gave a lengthy monologue from the stage near the beginning of her second set about her camping experience, which was a YMCA cross-country bus "teen tour" consisting of two bus loads of teenagers traveling to national parks, camping out, visiting monuments and historic sites. Lucy would mesmerize us around the camp fire with her angelic voice and lovely guitar playing. I am proud we encouraged her so early on and she was able to gain experience and confidence in performing for us just about every night of the summer trip! The indoor photo was probably taken in Warren, Ohio, at a YMCA. The outdoor photograph is hard for me to place exactly. We did visit the Wisconsin Dells on our way out west. We listened to a lot of Grateful Dead, Yes, and Joni Mitchell. I had always thought of Lucy as a young Joan Baez because of the angelic quality of her voice and the mesmerizing effect her singing had on me and everyone present; inspiring and spiritual. After many years, the first time I heard her voice again, live, quiet and beautiful was a moving moment for me which brought me back to those days around the campfire. The experience reminded me of the spiritual healing power of music and how blessed I am, and we all are, to have Lucy in our midst. Thank you for noticing and complimenting these priceless photographs.
