They start the interview with one of my favorite Kaplansky/Litvin lyrics: "When the stars come out the night is alive Connect those stars with the lines of your life With the lines on your hand with the words that you write One true word's gonna beat a pack of lies" It was interesting to see how "Land of the Living" has changed. I still occasionally sing, "taxi drivers are bowing down" instead of "kneeling down". It amazes me how much a line can change with just a few words added or altered.. For example, "3rd St Fire House wall"....it makes it so personal! I shouldn't log-on to this computer before the kids go to school because they almost missed their bus! There was a link to a recent article about Fleetwood Mac on the Here & Now website and I started to listen to that as well. They are my favorite band! They were comparing the old Fleetwood Mac and the new Fleetwood Mac. It's like comparing apples and oranges in my opinion!! Has anyone ever squirmed through Lucy's reminiscences of reluctantly going to summer camp in Wisconsin? She makes it sound as if being away from the comforts of the city and sleeping in a tent on the hard ground would be the most unpleasant thing imaginable. Of course, some of this may be "between song banter" just for comic effect. But I just re-visited the www.lucykaplansky.com "Family" photo page and there are a couple of priceless photos of Lucy sitting on the ground playing guitar at some dusty festival (?) back when she was 17. She's barefoot and has very tan legs so apparently she hasn't always been the refined, nature-shunning big-city girl that's been her schtick lately. It's always been a bit ironic for me to sit on similar dusty ground, guitar in hand, singing Lucy songs in a song-circle under the moon and stars (probably in need of a shower!) one night, then hear Lucy bad rap camping from the stage the next day. At least NOW WE KNOW that she has been there and done that! (BTW Can anyone figure out what festival that might have been? (Maybe it's just the aforementioned "Camp Grenada" in Wisconsin!) There is what appears to be a bus with open door in the background. Keep in mind Lucy was probably living in Chicago at the time.... Just seems like I don't post to any lists anymore. I just finished reading about two weeks of Lucy list due to holiday delay. I wanted to chime in on two things: First - Helen of Troy Benay your story was correct, but not complete. Paris was given to Helen as a trophy. But the results are important. Because Helen was given to Paris it started the Trojan war and ultimately resulted in the founding or Rome. So one small incident led to major repurcussions. I think it is brought up in the song because like Helen, Gwen's little affair destroys Avalon, Arthur, The Round Table, etc. The beauty of these women brings down governments. Second - Birds of Prey No one answered the "are there falcons at Falcon Ridge question?" Are there? I don't remember which UK lister asked, but I will tell you that in California anyway, it is not hard to find birds of prey. Even in the most populous areas you will see red tailed hawks swirling around the sky. In slightly more wild areas you can see many owls in the evening. I recently saw my first Eagle on a trip through the Sierra Nevada's. The US does have a healthy collection of birds of prey. Some are endangered, but the most adaptable seem to be at home even in Los Angeles! Happy New Year everyone! Lisa P.S. If you UK listers miss the Kris Delmhorst/Peter Mulvey shows you're crazy! Peter is a brilliant songwriter and guitar player and Kris is gaining on Dar and Lucy (in my affections anyway) with each new recording and performance. She is the real McCoy! ________________________________________________ Get your own "800" number Voicemail, fax, email, and a lot more http://www.ureach.com/reg/tag ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Jan 2003 12:29:48 -0800 (PST) From: toby linder Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy Concert Prep Hi. I was looking for suggestions. My husband and I will be attending Lucy's Feb. 14th concert. We are relatively new Lucy fans, having just purchased Every Single Day after hearing her on WFUV here in NY. I notice that the album was released in September of 2001. We find that concerts are better if you know all the music. We can't learn every Lucy song between now and the concert, but if you have any information about what Lucy "usually" plays, and whether you think the concert will focus on Every Single Day or be a general concert with a mix of all of her albums, that would be helpful. Any chance of hearing the Ring, which I know was recorded with Darryl Purpose (who I adore)? Thanks! Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable. However, you'll likely hear quite a bit from Every Single Day, plus some from the other albums. Here's what I think you're most likely to hear of the songs Lucy has already recorded, with album titles in parentheses: Pretty definite: Written on the Back of His Hand (Every Single Day) Ten Year Night (Ten Year Night) Don't Mind Me (Every Single Day) End of the Day (Ten Year Night) Guilty As Sin (Every Single Day) One Good Reason (Ten Year Night) Probable [not absolutely every show, but often]: Turn the Lights Back On (Ten Year Night) The Tide (The Tide) Secret Journey (The Tide) By Way of Sorrow (Cry, Cry, Cry album) Nowhere (heard more often when she's accompanied by a guitarist) Maybe: Song for Molly (Every Single Day)---often requested as an encore Guinevere (The Tide)---often requested as an encore The Kid (Cry, Cry, Cry album) I Know What Kind of Love This Is (Cry, Cry, Cry album) Broken Things (Every Single Day) MORE maybe [occasionals] For Once in Your Life (Ten Year Night) Still Life (Flesh & Bone) What's So Funny About Peace, Love, & Understanding (Flesh & Bone) My Name Joe (The Tide) Promise Me (Ten Year Night) If You Could See (Flesh & Bone---maybe, if there's a piano) Just You Tonight (Ten Year Night---again, maybe, if there's a piano) Others may disagree, and I might be forgetting some obvious stuff in my haste, but that's my assessment. Whatever Lucy plays, you're in for a treat. I'll be at the 2/14 show too, so maybe we'll meet---it's always great to get to know more Lucy fans! Benay P.S. I forgot Scorpion! I thought of it tonight apropos of nothing...Scorpion should be on the "pretty definite" list because Lucy almost always plays it in concert. Surely no one else cares, but I would just feel guilty leaving Scorpion off the list and not correcting my error...as if I had betrayed the song somehow, banishing it to some netherworld of Unmemorable Musical Experiences, when in fact it is an EXCELLENT song! Of course, that won't help you in preparation, Toby, since Scorpion is on Flesh & Bone and you only have Every Single Day thus far...and if you decide to build up slowly, based on what you're likely to hear most in concert, Ten Year Night is probably the logical next step. But I have a major soft spot for Flesh & Bone...to me, that and Every Single Day are near-perfect albums---ones I'm never tempted to skip around on, ones I never grow tired of, ones I'd take to a desert island, etc. (Heck, I DID take Every Single Day---no, not to a desert island---but to the desert, at least. I went to Arizona with it last year and forced my friends to play it repeatedly in the car until they pretty much threatened to throw me out if I didn't quit playing "all this depressing music." Then they put on something by Moby that I couldn't even decipher. Hmpf. A lot THEY knew.) Anyway, the point is, I love Flesh & Bone...and someday, if the stars align correctly, maybe Lucy will start doing The Thief again at least once in a while...she's just so GOOD with angry and depressing songs!
