I'm probably the only person on earth that doesn't have HBO!! I can't wait to see Lucy with the McGarrigles on Jan 19th. It's part of my "In-Your-Dreams" Folk Festival come true!!! I even splurged for the extra $$ for the meet & greet after the show. I've been on hiatus (like a struggling television show...but I don't seem to have been cancelled yet). My holidays were very nice and I hope all of yours were too...I just have not had anything Lucy-related to pipe in with lately. BUT tonight is Lucy's first show of 2003, up in Rochester...I hope we can expect some sort of review (Simona? No pressure. :-) ) Scheduling note: Lucy is now listed for THREE DAYS of Falcon Ridge instead of just one---hooray! (It looks like they're the last three of the four days, which gives me a chance of being there all the time that she's performing---hooray again!). I was just listening tonight to my tapes of some of last year's Falcon Ridge workshops, having FINALLY gotten a tape player at home, and I had to marvel once again at Lucy's performance in the Beatles workshop---the first time she did I'm Looking Through You, having come up with it as a last-minute substitution. She didn't even seem to hesitate---it sounded amazing even that first time. Random Lucy-related vacation experience: I was at my grandmother's for Christmas, and she was talking about something and I was only halfway listening because, while I adore my grandmother, half the things she says seem to be political opinions with which I vehemently disagree and it's best just not to get entangled. And then suddenly, making some kind of analogy, she said something about the myth of Paris and the apple, and I immediately perked up. Paris! Golden apples on a mountain! GUINEVERE! And then I thought, "MYTH? What myth?" Sigh...another example of a song I've blithely loved for ages with absolutely no clue about the meaning of the references. I've heard Lucy sing that Robin Batteau song I don't know how many times, and I always pretty much thought "Is it just the blood of Paris running through my veins/That sees a taken woman and myself I can't restrain" was just kind of a personification of Paris, France, that being a place widely associated with romance. And the golden apple reference that follows...well, I just kind of thought, oh, nice image, maybe it's from Arthurian legend somehow. Nope---GREEK MYTH. There's a whole legend about Paris having to choose the most beautiful woman of three to present with a golden apple, and he ends up choosing Aphrodite because she promises to set him up with Helen, the most beautiful woman in the world, even though Helen's already with somebody else...and Paris gets Helen in the end. At least, this is the short version of how I think it goes after some brief and highly unofficial research. Did everybody know this but me? (The other question being, does anybody really CARE but me? Probably not...but I was interested to find this out.) OK, back to your regularly scheduled Lucy-list programming for now... Benay P.S. If anybody wants, or knows anyone who wants, a Nields/Eddie from Ohio ticket for Peekskill, NY on Saturday, February 1st, fourth row aisle near the center, $25 (face) or best offer, email me off-list. I know it is slightly scandalous to even DISCUSS this show here in that it's happening the same night as a Lucy show in West Creek, NJ (I've found out I can get to West Creek, which is why I can't go to Peekskill!)...and by all means anybody who can go to West Creek to see Lucy should do so...but if there's anyone who will be in the Westchester area who CAN'T manage to get to Lucy in West Creek, this could be a good alternative...I would've loved to go if not for the conflict. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Jan 2003 01:48:43 EST From: Pashonfish@aol.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] first musings of the new year Benay, I have missed you and am so glad to hear the musings.... Yes! Even though I used to teach ancient history to 7th graders, I am not terribly well versed in the myths, so your reminder of the meaning of that song was welcome here in lonesome Oregon. Yes, somebody does really care, and anyway, you just have to realize that you are our teacher and instead of the glazed over look, you now get a "deleat" which is much less insulting, since you never really know! Happy New Year! I just went to see "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" this evening and I sometimes wonder if your relatives are a little like those in the movie.... It is really just my fantasy, since I have a bit of a sucky family... anyhoo... Welcome back.
