Neither I nor my organization can afford to spend money on doing this, we need to actually make at least a litttle bit (one show this fall we made a profit of $8) or we can't afford to do it. Finding the right sized and affordable venues is hard, and getting people in the door is harder. But its a totally wonderful fun thing to do. It really does bring me a lot of joy when I see 100 or 200 (or 20) people in a room truly enjoying some music that they would never have heard without me (and some good volunteers) doing the work to make it happen. There is a whole listserv for folk presenters (FOLKVENU) that I highly recommend if you are serious about getting into this. There are tons of experienced people happy to answer your questions (including me, but I am one of the much less experienced ones). I've been doing this here for almost two years, and I must say I am rather proud of what I've done in that time as far as putting on successful shows, bringing in the acts I want (OK despite not being able to convince Kris Delmhorst, YET.), not losing any money, and on May 3rd, I will be doing my second Lucy show (Missoula LOVES Lucy now, she was my first sold out show last April). Do email me if you want to talk about this more.
