Pittsburgh's a pretty big city and even has venues for artists. But then artists don't get invited at all or don't get invited back at the venues even when they sold out. We have a lot of local bands, a few are excellent, a couple are good, most are mediocre and the rest are just plain awful. Well, after seeing the succes of Big Tree Music in Rochester NY and Six Strings Concerts in Ohio I thought what would it take to start one's own Folk music series in a non profit volunteer run atmosphere? Lots of folks have done it and I figure so can those of us who yearn for more music. Artists will go where they are invited to go to and where they can be assured of getting paid. The biggest issues are a venue for the perfomrance, the sound equipment and technicians and getting the word out about the concerts. If anyone has done this and knows how to do this and is willing to share their information and experience I woudl greatly appreciate it. ~Simona - --- Pashonfish@aol.com wrote: > Leeann, > I just have to respond and say that even though > Portland is a "big" town, we > often don't get certain musicians to come play for > us. Well, I've just gone through this so I can share some of my experiences. The main reason I started producing shows in Richmond is because no one here would bring the artists I wanted to see. I could afford to do it and, more importantly, had the energy to do it. I have theatre experience both as an actor and as a stage manager, so I had experience of running a show and of the needs of the artist. My first show was bringing Voices on the Verge here in March which was a pretty big first attempt. I considered it successful and later was contacted about doing another show. I wanted a smaller space than I had for the previous show and knew of a 125 seat theatre in the Science Museum of Virginia. I have a friend there who is Director of Operations, and secured the space for 4 dates (ok, it grew from 1 to 2 (when you have the chance to book Kris Delmhorst you take it) to 4 (I added two shows of local artists). The great thing about the space is that it included sound and a sound person plus one other staff member. I also had the space from 5pm on. After getting space and artists, comes what was the toughest part for me. Getting the word out involves a LOT of work and I really need to improve in that area. And even with all I did, turnout was disappointing. But, Richmond is a tough nut to crack, unless you have motor vehicles going around in a circle. :-) The 5 shows in total ended up costing me what some would consider a large amount of money. But, in this case, the money is secondary. My goal is to bring people to this music, and if I succeed then the money will be there. To that end, I'm producing more shows next year. Hope some of this helps, don And deep down I thought that if I burrowed far enough into the minutiae I could drown out that little voice in the back of my head that told me I sucked. -- Necron, Romancer of Death http://www.bigempire.com/filthy/jimmysjournal.html Don Semmens; Richmond VA; donsem@attbi.com Visit the Regan fan site http://www.nickelsanddimes.org Rob Buck Memorial Scholarship Fund http://gottabuck.org/ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 23:04:07 -0500 From: "Benay Bubar" Subject: [lucy-list] a newly "found" Lucy show An alert for adventurous Lucy fans in NYC (or slightly less adventurous denizens of the northern suburbs): although it mysteriously does not seem to be on any of her official online schedules thus far, Lucy will be appearing in a 30th anniversary celebration for the Towne Crier to be held at 6 p.m. at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, NY on January 19th, also featuring Greg Brown, Kate and Anna McGarrigle, and Garnet Rogers. (Details are at www.townecrier.com.) I admit it's a bit "spendy" (a new word for me...one apparently generated on the West Coast that I was just taught by someone who's not on this list and therefore likely won't see my ingenious use of it here): around $40 for a ticket NOT including the wine-and-cheese-and-meet-and-greet for those who (unlike me) can cough up $25 more. But it sounds like a great show...and for us non-drivers, it's mercifully within train-and-taxi distance of the city (albeit just about as far as you can GO by train, barring Amtrak). I know that all of you in the New York area are salivating with eagerness to come along on this odyssey...seriously, I will go alone if necessary because I want to and I think I can manage it, but I'd be happy for company too, by train or otherwise...so if anybody would care to arrange something, email me off-list.
