Yea! Last night was my first solo Lucy show. I have only seen her with Winters Night before. Bob Hillman opened with a short set about stalkers, communism, correct grammar and increasing his fan base. Funny guy. Lucy came on stage and had a tiny false start due to "housekeeping" stuff. After that she sang for quite a while before talking at all. Yup, she warms up to the audience. (for those who care: brown jacket, black jeans, black t-shirt) The venue is next to the Portland Art Museum, a great room , cabaret style. A real luxury. I think she enjoyed it except for the room temperature towards the end. I always feel isolated liking the music I do, but last night proved that there are lots of strangers in PDX who love it too! Somewhere between 175 and 250. She kept the audience spellbound with the following: Small Dark Movie Written on the Back of HIs Hand Secret Journey The Tide Don't Mind Me Cowboy Singer Acknowledged Dave Carter. I guess Tracy was in the audience. Said it was her first time playing in an art museum / Masonic temple / place that serves booze (Air guitar story) Loch Lomond Scorpion (Story about adultery and sharing song content with her mom) Guilty As Sin I'm Looking Through You (talked about the George Harrison Tribute) I Had Something b& said this is a true story then sang: Ten Year Night This Is Home Land of the Living Talked about her parents Song About Pi (A Beautiful Mind Story) Five in the Morning By Way of Sorrow Encores When she came back out the room was SO HOT that she said she was likely to do a Tom Jones and fling sweat all over the audience. Of course that didnbt happen, she just looked glowing to me! Molly Broken Things Unfortunately I have no more to add because the friend I was with was ready to go and I am not much of a "crowds" person anyway. As I left Lucy was in the little front room getting ready to sign cds. So I have no answers to the guitar travel mystery, except that I think Donald has the answer. (air) I would have loved getting her to write a note to my classes. If I want to play music they beg for Land of the Living! I guess that is MY Lucy fix for the next year :-( Sarah ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Dec 2002 11:53:11 -0500 From: "Benay Bubar" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] A west coast review - PDX Thanks and commendations to Sarah for a MOST excellent Portland review, complete with set list! It made me very happy. :-) Glad to know Song About Pi was in the mix...I hadn't heard any of her dad's songs for a long time, and it's nice to know one made an appearance. Any memory of what she said about the George Harrison tribute? Just curious. Also, what did Lucy say about the exciting news sharon pointed out that Kanada's team has calculated 1.24 x 10^12 digits of Pi? :-) Phil ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Dec 2002 14:28:52 EST From: Pashonfish@aol.com Subject: [lucy-list] A west coast review - test answers Any memory of what she said about the George Harrison tribute? Just curious. She was basically thrilled to have been there; said his son was there and the spitting image(?) of George in the 60's (I think). ...... I didn't know I was going to have to take a test the next day... maybe had one too many glasses of Chardonnay. Don't tell my students. Also, at the end of the night when she was thanking people, she attested to the fact that Michael Kearsey, who brought Lucy to us, bears a strong resemblance to Paul (now that she has seem him). << Also, what did Lucy say about the exciting news sharon pointed out that Kanada's team has calculated 1.24 x 10^12 digits of Pi? :-) >> Not a thing. When she asked if there were mathematicians in the audience, we got one voice! I think that ended that line of chat! ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V4 #277 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
