Well last night was that night - and for those Lucy listers who don't know Kate she put on a wonderful show for us... just like Lucy, full of integrity, rich melody and finely realised lyrics... but in Kate's case, all full of rich Southern States cultural influences. And after the show over a beer... Kate and I talked about Lucy! She just, kind of, came up in conversation - as she does. And... it was really nice to hear Kate speak very highly of Lucy - she is clearly a fan. So it might have been a cold, grey, wet day in Wales... and a long way from the delta heat and humidity - but once again, it was our turn, on this side of the Atlantic, to enjoy some of America's finest songwriting - performed with real honesty and powerful emotion. Thanks to everyone who helped me on my way a month ago. And I knew the distinction, but I typed it wrong anyway and realized it afterward and had visions of many irate people calling me a fraud for ever having promoted myself as a Grammar Person when I can't even keep a simple homophone (I almost typed homonym, but that too would have been wrong) straight. Of course, nobody actually DID pipe up to call me a fraud for this reason, but I have a feeling nobody except me would have been petty enough to bother considering it! But since I brought up the Capitol Steps, let me just say (and this barely scrapes into Lucy territory based on Lucy's father's parodies) that if one happens to fancy oneself an amateur parodist, a Capitol Steps performance---this was the first I'd seen---is pretty much heaven on earth. (It is currently probably a slightly more heavenly experience if one is a _liberal Democratic_ amateur parodist, but the Republicans sitting all around me---they did an audience applause poll on party affiliation---seemed to have a pretty good time too.) The whole thing is political satire, and it's essentially two hours of hysterical parodies of popular songs. The Supreme Court justices sing "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Scalia?"...Ariel Sharon and Yasir Arafat duet on a version of "You Don't Bring Me Flowers Anymore."...and there is lots, lots more. I never knew about them before, but the Capitol Steps have been doing this sort of thing for over 20 years, and people pay to see it! At long last, another addition to my little list---"public libraries" being the other entry thus far---of aspects of my personal conception of a perfect world that actually exist in real life! Benay home again, albeit still crossing her fingers in hope of having truly escaped the horrendous illness that has now stricken 10 of the 18 people at the same Thanksgiving gathering... ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V4 #272 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
