Yes, now that you bring it up, I am afraid I WILL need some Lucy Anonymous meetings these next couple of months...but oh, no, Lucy Anonymous is LA, and that reminds me of the "La la la la la la la la" ending that Lucy puts on Don't Mind Me when she's singing it solo...something I won't have any chance of hearing for TWO AND A HALF MONTHS!...sob. And, well, now that you have so generously volunteered to be my sponsor, you know when those phone calls are going to come: "I thought I was doing OK without Lucy shows, Sharon, but I couldn't sleep, and when I finally looked at the clock, it was...Five in the Morning!" But the name torture happens with even more common names like say, Gina. I never had a license plate either. These days they are more common. Nobody seems to know how to spell it - always wanting to start it with a J or an E after the G. When Geena Davis came into the picture, it complicated things even more. But, the true horror came when in the 7th grade, the teacher pronounced it to rhyme with Dinah. This is 7th grade folks! That does NOT go away. But, I moved shortly after that and there were more people named Gina in the area, so it was back to normal. This was until I started dating a gynecologist who one day said, "Did you know that your name is the second half of vagina?" I did not hurl food at him, although this was my first instinct. Instead, I smiled and glanced demurely as I asked if this aroused him. It was a stupid question because EVERYTHING aroused him. Oops, way off topic here. Cerulean will survive. - ----- Original Message ----- From: Benay Bubar To: Sent: Monday, November 25, 2002 11:11 PM Subject: [lucy-list] Lucy at 92nd St. Y 11/24-the rambling part > With this level of delay from me, I fear the expectation will be of Pulitzer > Prize-winning journalism here...but in fact, the truth is that mundane > craziness of life has kept me from promptly performing my reviewing duties, > and tempted as I was to jettison all else in favor of writing about a Lucy > show, I did not think anyone would care to read the personal essay that > would soon have followed, titled How I Lost My Job Because I Spent My > Workday Writing a Lucy Review. Paul wrote: >>>Why not something completely different? 1) Susan Werner -next album will be jazz<<< Susan Werner is indeed fabulous! And she moves with ease between the genres of folk and lounge jazz. I saw her a little over a month ago and she performed excerpts from her "song cycle" which is as funny (it's about the rise and fall of a relationship) as it is musically awesome. She even has a moniker: "Suzy Shantoozy" (i.e. chanteuse). Lucy content: I have Lucy in an interview (was it Kristen's "Trail Mix" CD from KANU in Kansas?) in which the interviewer goes into her early childhood singing along with her dad on all of the jazz standards. He askes her quite pointedly if she had ever considered doing an album of jazz standards....to which she responded something like "Hmmm....That's an interesting proposition...but, no, I haven't." She seemed pleased by the suggestion....you can hear it in her voice. I for one, think it would be marvelous....'cept that she may have to cozy up to some dedicated Jazz back-up musicians and stretch her voice a bit in order to produce a more sale-able product for this most discriminating audience. That could mean lots of late-night hours in smokey bars! As for country, you could almost put together an entire Lucy-does-country CD by excerpting from all the available recorded work including Cry Cry Cry (Down By The Water, etc.) and early recorded live stuff (Lucy rarities). We'll include the Gospel Bluegrass stuff (Angel's Rejoiced, etc.) in this CD as well. As you might recall, her bio states that she used to be in a touring country-western band! And we can call the CD "Heartbeat Of America"! Haha! This may be old news to all the "folk-hip" people on this list....but it sure was news to me!! While reading the Minneapolis Star-Tribune over lunch today I caught the following notice: "Bob Feldman, president of Red House Records, had noticed something diferent about the set lists played by his flagship artist Greg Brown recently: Far more love songs than usual were creeping their way into concerts. Feldman's hunch that the Iowa folk singer was in love was confirmed Monday when he found out that Brown, 53, married singer/songwriter Iris DeMent, 41, in a private ceremony in Kansas City, Mo., last Thursday. "They both sounded incredibly happy," said Feldman, confirming that the two had not dated long but "had admired each other for years." It's not the first marriage for either singer. They reportedly got to know each other better during the making of this year's "Going Driftless: An Artits' Tribute to Greg Brown," which features DeMent and others. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Nov 2002 19:27:07 -0600 From: "Gina" Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Lucy at 92nd St. Y 11/24-the rambling part > Not sure I could ever date a gynecologist... eeewoooweee! Sharon and Benay, you made me laugh today with your posts. You were both so right on. In fact, it didn't even take 24 hours, I joined the next morning--at work. Hey, a girl has to have her priorities straight. I'd also like to thank Sharon, Benay, Chris, Rebekah, and everybody else I met, for making me feel so comfortable and welcome. It was an added bonus to a wonderful evening of music. My cat, Dinah, keeps walking all over this keyboard--think she's trying to tell me something? Being a relatively new cat person, "No" is not in their vocabulary. Very interesting creatures. Anyway, I wish you all a happy Thanksgiving and a very happy and peaceful holiday season. I am hanging in here waiting for Lucy in a week and a half.... No, Benay, I don't feel sorry for you. Seeing her once a year by herself and once with "Winter's Night" does not compare with your opportunities, but I DO live vicariously through you and for that I am truly thankful. Oh yeah... that is what I was about to say....... I AM thankful for all of you sharing of yourselves. After a long day in the middle school trenches (like this week of parent conferences) I LOVE to come home and get my smiles. Anybody seen Lynn Miles? She was just here with Cosy Sheridan opening and it was great! A really small venue and a great night! I am thankful!
