I managed (somewhat to my surprise) to be first in line at around quarter to six, which netted me the privilege of a seat on the freezing cold cement church steps. (It wasn't terribly cold outside, but the temperature dropped fairly dramatically over the course of the time until the doors opened.) The benefit to this position was the ability to hear through the thick wooden church doors the vague hint of soundcheck...I could just tell that Richard was singing, then Lucy, but couldn't hear well enough to make out the songs. Joanne joined me in short order, then Sharon and Donna and her friend Donna...we managed to connect with Renee and her aunt once inside. By the time the doors opened at 8, the line stretched all the way down the sidewalk to the street and well around the corner...I couldn't even see where it ended. The Outpost is a great venue except that the pews get kind of uncomfortable after a while and there's a woeful lack of restrooms such that those in the know do not drink ANYTHING while there. Still, it's a nice place to see a show---this was the first time I'd seen Lucy and Richard there, although they had also been there in February 2001. This was the first Richard/Lucy cobill I'd seen in which Richard did his set first...an arrangement I liked, not only because I'm a "save-the-best-for-last" type but also because Lucy has some more energetic songs and I think it would have been hard to get revved up by Lucy and then come down again for the contemplative nature of much of what Richard sings. Of course, "revved up" applied more to some of us than others---in the middle of I'm Looking Through You, I noticed that I and a good portion of the little group I was with were grinning and bouncing blissfully to the beat in our seats, while the other people I could see immediately around us looked to be sitting ramrod-straight in Let Us Appreciate This Fine Music mode...not a bounce to be seen. They will probably think we are nuts, I thought. Then I thought, well, who cares? When Lucy rocks, she rocks, and we should get to rock with her if we want to! I realized I left The Angels Rejoiced out of my setlist yesterday...it was dark where I was scribbling during the show, so I missed it when I was transcribing later...they did do that one, though, as the first encore, just before Farewell to Saint Delores. I did wish Lucy and Richard had done a few more songs together, since I could think of a few more possibilities, like Memory of You, Kenworth of My Dreams, Sin City, Fourth of July Asbury Park, and Mary Magdalene (though I'm not sure both of them have ever done that one TOGETHER...they have just both sung it). Still, I was very happy about what they DID do, and I think I agree about its being one of the best Lucy shows I've seen except that it's getting really hard to pick...she keeps getting better, and these days the last one I've seen always seems to be the best. Funniest moment in my book: Starting to play Farewell to Saint Delores, Richard forgot to plug in his guitar. He realized his mistake and stopped, then bent to plug it in, remarking, in a that-was-dumb-of-me kind of tone, something like, "Dave [Carter]'s laughing right now." A moment's pause, and then Lucy, giggling as she watched Richard fumble, remarked with perfect comic timing, "So am I!" I'm still shivering at how wonderful Farewell to Saint Delores was...unfortunately, not one Lucy would ever be likely to do without Richard, since he had the lead. But they're together tonight again up in Albany...if anybody on the list is up there and goes to that show, I'd love to hear about it. (I'd also love to hear in general, off-list, if anybody on the list is from the Albany, NY area and goes to shows there---it's tantalizingly close to where my parents are, and there's some good music up there these days, but as a non-driver, it's never been feasible for me to get there for evening shows, not to mention HOME. Since I do get to the area with some frequency, though, I'd love to know somebody there who's into this music.) I've received my first post a couple of minutes ago. I too was at the Lucy and Richard show in Montclair. Was extremely lucky to somehow find myself in the first row, which for some reason, was not reserved. It was awesome being within reach of the stage. It was my first Lucy show. I only began listening to Lucy during the summer when she was billed to have played with Judy Collins in Ocean Grove, NJ. It turned out she had a conflict in schedule or something but she did not perform that night. But because I thought she was playing there I purchased Ten Year Night, just to have a taste of her music and the rest is history. I can't get enough. Richard was quite a surprise. I began listening to his music about 2 months ago and find him very talented and his live performance was excellent. Lucy was unbelievable. The only thing missing was another hour or two of music. Has she performed "Song for Molly" live? I spoke briefly with Richard after the show when he signed a CD my friend purchased. On the way out I noticed Lucy coming into the vestibule of the church so we walked over to her and she was extremely pleasant and fun to talk with. At one point we mentioned her psychiatrist whom she stated was from Montclair. I thought she was joking during the show when she mentioned this but apparently it was true. I kiddingly asked if we needed therapy could we come to her for a session. She said "oh no, that was so long ago I wouldn't remember what to do". I told her I was going to see her in Rahway NJ in March. At first she seemed puzzled, but the women with her knew the date and told her it was a great location - Lucy said "Cool". Anyway, it was a great night, I'm glad I've somehow "stumbled" into her music. I've now introduced many others to her music. Looking forward to posts from the group. Thanks. Actually, Donna Myers and I (both on this list) were the women standing nearby when you asked Lucy that therapy question, and we were the ones who confirmed the Rahway date! (Lucy doesn't always remember her schedule very far in advance; that's OK, though, because her fans tend to remember it for her!) I'm surprised you managed the first row---we were steered into about the sixth row, having been told that the rest was reserved. However, I'm glad you got really good seating for your first Lucy show. Hopefully it will be the first of many. Yes, Lucy does do Song for Molly live relatively often, though it seems to be on hiatus lately. It's regularly requested as an encore. It's a song she's a little more likely to do it in solo shows, I think---when she plays with Duke Levine (and/or Zev Katz), as was the case in Montclair, she tends to stick with a similar (though not totally unvarying) set that showcases his/their talents, which doesn't necessarily include that song. Anyway, hope you enjoy the list---it's generally quite Lucy-focused (with occasional great gaping exceptions) and friendly. Certain people babble on rather excessively sometimes (that would be me...and me...and me...) but if you don't let that get to you too much, it's a pretty nice place to be! Again, welcome...Donna and I, among others, will look forward to seeing you at the Rahway show in March, and now that we have some idea who one another are, we'll be able to introduce ourselves!
