The past two days were what I dubbed my Grateful Dead Lucy Weekend...so named because a coworker not familiar with Lucy, to whom I mentioned the fact that I was going to see Lucy in Alexandria, Virginia, then coming back the next day to see her in Hightstown, NJ, said (in all seriousness), "Is she like the Grateful Dead or something?" Anyway, I didn't mention the trip on-list beforehand because the whole thing involved enough planning and travel connections that I wasn't entirely sure until the last minute that it would all work out. And it all DID work out, absolutely perfectly...I couldn't have asked for anything better, from Lucy or from any of the other kind and generous people who helped me put the whole plan into motion. Unfortunately, I am momentarily not in a position to do one of my customary lengthy review postings. This has NOTHING to do with any lack of enthusiasm about the past two days of Lucy shows---I had an amazing time, start to finish, and anyone who saw me can attest to that. It's just other circumstances now that I'm home. But in the interests of practicing what I preach, because it's the least I would want if I hadn't been there and because I have them written down, I am at least going to do setlists now. BIRCHMERE-ALEXANDRIA, VIRGINIA-10/18/02 (with Duke Levine; opener: Commonbond) The Angels Rejoice One Good Reason Written on the Back of His Hand Secret Journey The Tide Don't Mind Me (air guitar story) Loch Lomond Guilty As Sin I'm Looking Through You I Had Something Ten Year Night This Is Home Land of the Living Hot Burrito #1 (piano) End of the Day Nowhere Swimming Song Someday Soon Scorpion Encores: Guinevere You're Still Standing There HIGHTSTOWN, NJ-10/19/02 (with Duke Levine; opener: Deb Pasternak) Small Dark Movie One Good Reason Written on the Back of HIs Hand Secret Journey The Tide Don't Mind Me (air guitar story) Loch Lomond Guilty As Sin I'm Looking Through You I Had Something Ten Year Night This Is Home Land of the Living Hole in My Head Nowhere End of the Day By Way of Sorrow Goodnight Largely similar setlists, you may notice, but no less wonderful because of it. Lucy still seems to outdo herself at every single show. And Rick, back from Ireland for now, came to both of these shows, which was a great treat in itself. Incredible thanks to Libby, my most gracious host in Virginia, for enduring all the planning and believing with me that a whirlwind trip was feasible and worthwhile and then helping me actually make it happen...and thanks to Joann for being so welcoming too. And to Donna in NJ (whose kids are, it turns out, not only incredibly sweet, but ace domino players to boot!) for getting me to public-transit-less Hightstown in high style and being great company as usual. And to Sharon for getting me safely home in more ways than one. And thanks to Lucy, of course, for being who she is and doing what she does...and Rick, to whom, though he doesn't go onstage, that same thanks certainly applies. I know this is pretty bare-bones (for me), and doesn't do true justice to what was an incredibly amazing weekend I"ll never forget, but it's what I can do now. I may manage to tack on some of the bells and whistles later...in the meantime, anyone who was there and who wants to is welcome and encouraged to fill in more details. I headed to Heightstown NJ where the venue is an elementary school. If you are 5 feet tall..you are too tall for the "girls room" stalls.. this happens to be the first place i saw Lucy Solo and the first place i met graham and becky, pre Falcon ridge, and then 2 years ago thanksgiving weekend, the first place i met donna,,, its actually the first place i MET Lucy and Rick so this venue is a very special stop in my Lucy adventure the people there are the nicest of most of the venues..its hassle free...they love the music and love the fans..its a small auditorium with kick butt (another dirty word) sound... Benay posted the set list.. ill post the ancillary stuff.. the plan was to meet donna, and benay and graham and becky to have dinner pre show..so we did and we saw lucy and the suddenly Rick (from Ireland for a week ) in the lobby well we saw Rick first and lucy came over to catch up with us.. and that is what it was like..catching up.. i realized i hadnt seen rick and since august in huntington LI so its been a while.. Deb pasternak opened for lucy and its good that she is back at music she took a hiatus after 9-11... Lucy brought Duke Levine with her.. and he needs to play with her every night He is a guitar genius..he plays the best guitar parts that i have heard. .as a producer and an artist, he has a great ear...GET ellis Pauls new cd.. and hear the other side of Duke Levine.. he is a Maybe Baby with jennifer kimball dont miss him Lucy can play differently wtih duke and play .. Hole in My head.. with him on guitar.. he fillout, completes the music.. and she loves it.. we all noticed lucys new Leather jacket.. and the quote of the night was from Becky... "i knew it was new, because it hasnt been talked about on the internet".. well becky.. its crushed brown leather with flower inserts on the shoulders, its is a brown gasoline jacket that she got at Guess..its a beautiful worn looking jacket in light brown.. becky took photos.. maybe we can coax her to scan some.. lucy talked about her air guitar adventure.. i dont think she plays it herself.. i wonder if she sings into the hairbrush... oh we've seen her hair.. she cant brush it.. what is her make-believe microphone.. oh she carries a real one so its off to Montclair NJ on Friday.. oh GAWD.. the threat of NY/NJ traffic sucks....i had the run to Montclair on friday its lucy and we wont see her here until November.... those ny dates are getting spaced further apart her big news was.. she and rick are going to the Royal Albert Hall for the Harrison Tribute and she'll see the beatles... sharon The after the show... if your sister or your brother were stumbling on their last mile in a self-inflicted exile wish for them a humble friend and i hope someday that the best of falstaffs planners give you seven half-built manors where dreams may dream without end dar williams ------------------------------ End of lucy-list-digest V4 #243 ******************************* This has been a posting from the Lucy Kaplansky mail list digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe lucy-list-digest" in the body of the message
