Sorry that I did not get a chance to talk to you on Sunday, Iain (and Ian). I also knew I could rely on Donald for a set list for Glasgow and since Lucy claims that she will sign anything, I would love to see her face if someone took up Benay's suggestion of getting her to sign the free air guitar that she is planning to give away with her albums! As Donald said, Lucy did indeed say that this was the first time that she had played a church with a bar and that it could only happen in Scotland. Now, far me it for me to correct our lady but... Waaaaaaaaay back before Lucy's UK/Eire Christmas tours started, around the time that the Lucy List was just starting, she played the Ramshorn Drama Centre in Glasgow which is a deconsecrated church with a bar and she even asked for a drink from the stage. I was enthusiastic enough, even in those days, to review the show and that review went to the Dar List (for want of a better home). I will try and dig it out of their archives. Which leaves two questions which I was hoping that Lucy would clear up during the tour but didn't. 1. Would someone tell the list the Water Bug story? The UK did not get the chance to hear it (certainly not at any of the gigs that I was at). and almost as importantly... 2. Would someone translate "Water Bug" into the Queen's English so we will know what she was actually talking about? Jeremy ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Oct 2002 07:02:20 -0400 From: "Benay Bubar" Subject: [lucy-list] to answer Jeremy's questions First, here's Jeremy's past Ramshorn review from the Dar-list...so yes, there was another church serving alcohol in Lucy's past: http://grassyhill.org/stax/dar-list/index.cgi?i=928312179_jeremybr (Thanks to Tom Neff for the searchable archives...as I only recently discovered, blessedly available for the Lucy-list too, at www.grassyhill.org/stax/lucy-list.) And, though Sharon put a little waterbug explanation on the Dar-list that I now see may have been meant for the Lucy-list, I will say here that a waterbug may not be exactly a cockroach, but (as one who has seen more than she would wish, and written parodies thereof) it is LIKE a cockroach on steroids. No, we do not need to get into another big discussion of waterbugs here...but here's Lucy's story, in brief (those who have already heard it live can delete or scroll through from this point on): Ten Year Night [to which this is an intro] is a song about true love. Recently (OK, probably NOT so recently now, but it's always recently in the story), Lucy and Rick were in their bedroom one evening when a HUGE insect flew in the window and landed on the computer screen...she always says she doesn't even know if there's a NAME for something this big except maybe "flying waterbug"). Lucy screamed, ran out of the room to the other room of their two-room apartment, and slammed the door...leaving Rick in the room with this creature. Lucy talked through the door about checking into a hotel. Meanwhile, she heard banging noises in the room, and after a little while, Rick emerged, looking absolutely defeated. He said (dramatic tones here): "I think we need...the vacuum." Upon receiving said vacuum, he retreated BACK into the bedroom, still leaving Lucy outside, and there he VANQUISHED the creature. And he never said anything about the fact that Lucy had fled ("behaved like a five-year-old") and left him all alone with this thing. And that, to Lucy, is true love... Off to the dentist...wish I had a good story to tell MYSELF to get through that... I paid $10 for my ticket to see Lucy (well, $17 when Ticketbastard added "convenience" and other charges--which are not convenient at all and could lead to a rant about monopolies but won't), and if, say 300 others did as well, that doesn't add up to much. Anyway, can somebody help me understand this? Welcome to the wonderful high-roller world of professional folk music. :) At a typical gig, the house will take a percentage (anywhere from 25-50%) of the "gate," the total monies paid for tickets. So if 300 people pay (as opposed to freeload via the guest list etc) and pay $10 each, the artist might net $2000. And that's good money for a solo folk show. The artist also typically gets most (or in some cases all) the money for CD sales, T-shirt sales, etc, and this adds to the nightly "take." As a friend and a delighted fan of Dr. K, let me say that she is absolutely an A-list talent in every way! But as a folk presenter, I know that she's not one of the top billing acts. If you want to blow your birthday bash budget, try to get Natalie McMaster or Judy Collins or Tracy Chapman or Ani or someone like that - a Boxster might be cheaper. It's not a meritocracy, it's a reputation-ocracy and a major-label-marketing-ocracy and a few other -ocracies. But Lucy makes a decent living and we are directly responsible, and sometimes we have to take our blessings where we find them. (I just had a funny thought when I called Lucy "Dr. K." Remember the old days with Doc Gooden on the Mets, back in the mid-80's when he was untouchable bottled lightning? They used to call him "Doctor K" (K being the scorecard symbol for a strikeout) and Mets fans created a "K Corner" where a row of big poster-sized K's would be added to every time he whiffed a batter. One of these days at a balcony show like the Beacon, we ought to honor her with a K Corner of her own, one per song, eh?) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Oct 2002 08:03:34 -0500 From: jrattazz@juno.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Re: economics Tom: Yes,Ticket......is certainly capitalism run amuck..2 $35.00 tickets to american Idol (in Arizona) cost $90.00 from them..add $10.00 parking and forget about it..which we did. And before you tell me that it is "impossible", I'll have you know that they do make and sell "air guitars"--my singer-songwriter friend Will Hale sells them to kids at his shows for a buck and does a number where they all come up front and rock out with him! They're inflatable and come in a wide variety of colors. As for signing guitars, there is precendent. I had Lucy sign a new guitar I'd bought for myself as a Christmas gift two years back. It was a black semi-hollow body that resembled BB King's famous guitar(s) named "Lucille" enough that I had Lucy sign "Lucille K" on the same part of the guitar! (I remember her saying, "Are you SURE you want to do this?" I got the unusual idea from a returned check stub from a CD I'd bought directly from Lucy years ago. She endorsed the back of my check "Lucille Kaplansky", which I thought quaint at the time. (Anybody else got an autograph from Lucy from a check stub?) By the way, I thought her signing my guitar "Lucille K" was one of the funniest "inside jokes" of that year as she was at that time a potent inspiration in my coming out as a combined guitar/vocalist that following summer. The downside is that I'm now averse to clipping my capo up there as I'm afraid it could over time rub the letters off the wood. As I said the last time, I reviewed Lucy back in 1999 when she was in another deconsecrated church in Glasgow asking for a drink from the bar. This was sent to the Dar List at the time as I had yet to join the then new Lucy List although Walter did mention the gig if you search the Lucy archives. The only thing that I have done to it is to remove my old email address. We had all better be wary of this however - Benay may decide that we need reviews of concerts from years ago rather than just days! Enjoy a blast from the past Jeremy ******************************************************* From: Jeremy Briggs Date: Wed Jun 2 04:29:40 1999 Subj: Lucy in Scotland Lucy played the Ramshorn Theatre in Glasgow on Monday 31 May 1999. The Dar-List contingent of Lesley, Steven, Pam, Kathy and myself were virtually first in the queue waiting for the doors to open and when they did we were able to nab the front row centre table with enough seats for all of us. The theatre itself is part of the University of Strathclyde and is used as their Drama Centre. It is actually a converted church which seats 100 and Lucy had sold the place out as part of Glasgow's Big Big Country Festival. With no stage as such, just an area at the front on the same level as the audience, Steven and I could have spent the entire evening with our feet resting on the artist's loudspeakers, we were that close. Lucy appeared in her ubiquitous black leather jacket to discover that the opening act singer was considerably taller than she was and that the microphone was pointing over her head. So after a fiddle to get the mike into a more appropriate position she was off into both C3's and her own songs. Her attempt at a Glasgow greeting met with some amusement but she soon got into her stride by suggesting that the term "Glaswegian" sounded like an alien race from Star Trek. She seemed to enjoy herself after she had got the measure of the audience, Glasgow audiences being notorious for giving performers a hard time, and even told us that she could see everyone smiling at her in the small auditorium. In amongst her own songs we were treated to That's Mathematics and The Song About Pi from her father and the fact that after she mentioned her father's e-mail address at an Alaskan concert he had received some 50 e-mails which had delighted him. Later on, when she got thirsty, she asked for a drink from the bar to be brought over to her with the comment that wasn't it sacrilegious to drink alcohol in a church. Other than the stories about her father, she told us the story about her mother phoning her in a taxi about the new album, how much she enjoyed being on the C3 tour bus and denied that the infamous kitchen floor incident ever took place. After her encore she was out almost immediately to sign autographs and to chat, apologising that the cover of Ten Year Night was not really the right colour to sign autographs in black pen on. The meet and greet seemed to surprise a lot of the audience but it certainly increased the CD sales once they realised what was going on and a lot of people were impressed that she was asking them questions and personalising their autographs. So a great concert and a good night was had by all (see what you missed Phil). Roll on the next UK Dar tour so we can do it all over again. I was speaking yesterday with someone involved with this show, and she said that it was not going to be "well-attended," which broke my heart. Originally, the show was going to be Christine Lavin and Julie Gold. I'm not very familiar with either of them, but know many of Julie's songs, and Christine's enchanting new album has been receiving much airplay on WUMB, and I've already earmarked some moolah to purchase it! What then happened is that Nerissa and Katryna Nields were scheduled to play on the same night at the Somerville Theatre, with Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer. Upon hearing of Dave's death, that promoter immediately pulled out on the show, even though Tracy, Nerissa and Katryna had had a confab, with the consensus being that they all still REALLY wanted to do the show. Somehow, the promoters involved with Christine's and Julie's show were approached, and after talking it over with Christine and Julie, it was agreed that Tracy, Nerissa and Katryna would be added to their bill. I was SO excited about this, and so grateful to Christine, Julie and Multistage Productions for saying "yes" when the other promoter said "no." It seems to me like this is a really great lineup, and I was disappointed to hear that ticket sales were not as strong as could be hoped. I, for one, have 100% faith in Tracy's ability to be a solo performer, with or without backup. I admit that I had wondered until Falcon Ridge, but she stepped into the spotlight, took my breath away and erased all lingering doubt. I will do anything to help support her in her mission to keep Dave's music alive. If anyone's in the Boston area and looking for some great music, I hope that you might consider this show. As I've said, I've seen neither Christine or Julie, but Nerissa, Katryna and Tracy are three of my favorite performers in this world (not counting Lucy, of course). I'd love for this show to be a success for everyone, but especially for Tracy as she performs this first non-festival, non-memorial show since Dave's death. I want there to be other shows for her in the future. More information can be found at: http://www.multistage.org/ChristineJulie.html For anyone going, please feel free to come say hi to me! I'll be manning the merch table for Tracy's and Nerissa's and Katryna's wares.
