On the way Radio Scotland played a Lucy song , a good omen , or what. The Westhoughton venue , where Lucy was booked to play two nights , turned out to be a local golf club. We went to the bar , as Scots are likely to do , and spotted our lady who was having a meal . I later heard this American voice saying "Hey - Is that Donald , or is it Ian ?" I confirmed that it was indeed Donald and Lucy even remembered that we had been at both Glasgow and Glenfarg 9 months earlierand was really surprised that we had travelled so far to see her. Lucy introduced me to her husband Rick , a John Lennon look a like , or what , and a really nice guy. There was a full house (120 to 140 ish) for the second night and Lucy was in great form. Fashion note : see cover of Flesh & Bone and add some embroidery and sparkly bits to the jeans and you'll get the picture ! The gig was very relaxed and this audience sings along to most of the songs ! There were many stories and one of them was an update on the Air Guitar story where we developed a bit of audience discussion where it was explained that the concept arose from people wanting to copy Eric Clapton , but couldn't afford a guitar (Me ...I used to play the tennis racket !) ,. but Lucy couldn't believe that such a subject was being broadcast on National radio . Someone shouted out that Brian May used to play Air Guitar , and our lady replied "Who's Brian May ?" , and she wasn't kidding - the audience had a good laugh with her and advised that he was the guitar player in Queen. I've seen Lucy about six times before this show and she is really developing as an artist where her confidence seems to have increased and the arrangements on some of the songs have changed a lot. Set List - And no I didn't record the show (wish I had as the sound was great) , but a local Folk Magazine reporter was there and he took notes and e-mailed them to me , which I corrected , filled in the gaps and returned to him , so thanks to Dave Jones of Folk North West magazine As you will see we got very little from ESD , and loads of oldies , and some real surprises including Ricks request for Hot Burrito #1 , which meant that we didn't get Just You Tonight which is what I think she was going to play , and some beautiful new material - about time she got back in the studio ,dont you think ? 1. The Angels Rejoiced Last Night 2. Written on the back of his hand 3. More than this 4. Secret journey 5. Don't mind me 6. The Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond 7. Hot Burrito #1 8. Ian and myself (Iain - note the spelling difference) showed up on Sunday night in Glasgow which as Jeremy described earlier caused a bit of confusion to those new to the venue. It trully was a case of enter stage right. We walked in and there was Donald at the first table with his frie= nds who he'd brought along for their first indoctrination. He pointed out Luc= y who was sitting with Rick and friends nearby so we walked over, Lucy recognised us ("the stalkers") and introduced us to Rick who as Donald di= d mention is a bit of a Lennon lookalike if you screw your eyes up :-) What= I first noticed which doesn't seem to have been mentioned or maybe I missed= it is how well Lucy is looking. She's lost a lot of weight and looks terrifi= c. I hope that doesn't sound rude, it's meant as a compliment. We went upsta= irs to the venue and sure enough it was quickly filling up. I believe there w= ere around 350 tickets available (I may be wrong) but it was certainly a pack= ed house. The venue being a deconsecrated church was very atmospheric with terrific acoustics. Lucy did make mention of how cool it was to play in a church that sold alcohol (only that could happen in Scotland she remarked= ). I'll leave the technicalities to Donald although I probably could relate = the set list I wouldn't want to make any mistakes for the purists out there. = I would say that as Donald already pointed out Lucy's performances have rea= lly got better and better. "The Angels rejoiced last night" seemed so apt giv= en the venue but I'll leave the rest for Donald. We're talking football here , no not American football ... real football , which some of you will know as soccer but this match is between Glasgow's two biggest clubs Celtic and Rangers both of whom have a huge following and after match "celebrations" regularly include punch ups , the odd stabbing ... you get my drift ! So how to kill time on the road ? - divert to the Lake District and visit the town (Keswick) where me and my (long suffering) wife Liz went on our honeymoon some 22 years ago. (Scored a few points for this one) Lovely part of the world - almost as nice as Scotland ! Anyway , back to the point ... Lucy's gig in Glasgow was in an old 17th Century recently refurbished ex church which is the nicest venue that she has played in Glasgow so far. We went to the cafe bar in the venue and there was our Lucy and entourage. Now on Friday a lady called Amy Rigby was playing in The Bein Inn in Glenfarg and we did think of going along to see her but just couldn't get it together .... but who was supporting Lucy in Glasgow ... Amy Rigby , who was having a meal with Lucy & co. We said hello to Lucy and Rick and she was totally impressed with St Andrews In The Square. We were a bit late going upstairs to the show and when we walked in all I could think was where the h*ll all these people had come from ... Didn't they realise that Lucy's our treasure , how dare the 300 plus crowd come along to my show ! This was the biggest crowd I've seen for a Lucy gig in the UK , and I'm fairly sure Lucy was well surprised by the size of the crowd. We met several Lucy Listers Ian , Iain , and Jeremy - Where were you Lorna ? and some people that we had met at Glenfarg 9 months ago. Now we heard a brilliant story from a young fan called Alice who met Lucy after the show in Glenfarg and when asked what kind of music she liked she said she didn't really like much other than Lucy - so Lucy took a note of her name & address and said she would get her record company to send some discs , and about a month later a package from Red House arrived with 10 CD's - so good for you Lucy and Red House ! Lots of stories tonight ... Air Guitars - Lucy announced her new marketing ploy .... Buy a CD and get an Air Guitar free ! Scotland - she loves it , genuinely so I believe . OK Ms Goldberg you got the credit on ESD but our whole nation got one on TYN ! Played Crazy Dreams , followed by Mary & The Soldier which Lucy told us was taught to her by Paul Brady (Who's in NYC next month in The Village Underground for two nights , so maybe Lucy will join him ?) First time ever she's played in a church where they have a bar and sell booze , well that's Scotland for you Asked the audience if there any mathematicians in the house and guess what there was ... sad don't you think ? There was no reply when Lucy asked if he knew her Dad - So this led on to A Song About Pi , and some even sadder person shouted out that Pi equalled 3.1428571 etc - must have had his calculator with him - Lucy's response was "Who are you ? They will all think you're a plant" As they show grew to a close Lucy asked for requests and there were many all of which she refferred to as in the sad category , and theorised that the Scots liked drinking and singing sad songs - about right I would say ! Lucy was thrilled to receive a gift of the sheet music for the Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond , which can now replace the tattered piece of paper she's used at every show since Glasgow last year - and I'm not joking , ask her next time you see her We took along our friends Ramsey & Morag along with their daughters for there first Lucy show , and I introduced them to Lucy after the show - another 4 converts ! Set List : The Angels Rejoiced One Good Reason The Tide Don't Mind Me Secret Journey Bonnie Bonnie Banks Of Loch Lomond Guilty As Sin I'm Looking Through You I Had Something Ten Year Night Crazy Dreams Mary & The Soldier This Is Mine Land Of The Living A Song About Pi Written On The Back Of His Hand Scorpion You're Still Standing There Guinevere ~~~~~~~~~ Song For Molly Broken Things That's it folks - Two great and very different gigs - Lucy is going places over here Hope to see her back here soon , now returning Lucy back to the States - look after her ! We had a great weekend and the only problem was having to drive 170 miles back to Aberdeenshire after the show getting to bed at 2.30 am , and up for work at 6.30 .... but it was worth it Donald ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Oct 2002 21:57:24 +0100 From: "Kevin Ball" Subject: RE: [lucy-list] a tiny shocked introjection Sorry Donald, I didn't get to meet up with you, but I WAS there on Saturday night. Yes, Lucy did play some pretty amazing songs, and with a stridency that was missing the first time we saw her last year (this was only my second time). All three that you mention, Benay, were requests, in fact The Thief and The Swimming Song were (respectively) daughter and father requests. There was a little girl in the audience, sitting right in front of us, who couldn't have been more than about 6. She was with her parents, and it transpired during the show that they had been there on the Friday night as well. The little girl was a definite fan, I noticed she was wearing a tee-shirt with a picture of Lucy on it. Lucy told her that she wanted to take her home, she was so cute! Apparently the little girl had requested The Thief, and so Lucy played it for her (although pointing out that it wasn't really a kids song). Then she said that as they had been there 2 nights, she would play the little girl's father's request, which was the Swimming Song (I'm a Loudo fan of nearly 20 years, and although I'd read that Lucy sometimes sang The Swimming Song, I'd pretty much given up hope of ever hearing her sing it live, so this was a treat that I cannot describe). She also mentioned later on that she'd play a request for someone else because they'd been there the Friday night also, although it wasn't only people who came both nights that got a request, because Five in the Morning was my wife's request (and her favourite Lucy song), as she met Lucy in the ladies' toilets during the interval (Lucy was trying to cool down in there), and apparently ladies always talk to each other in the toilets! If there's anyone within striking distance of Westhoughton (and apparently this now includes Scotland!), I'd really recommend it as a venue. The regular support band are great, and the venue is so small and intimate that you're bound to have a great time - and the hot roast beef sandwiches are now getting an international reputation! The zeal and vigor of your efforts shines through your in your posts. It is always entertaining to hear the descriptions of the "particularly stunning configuration de jour" (leather pants, etc...) that Lucy is wearing. I am a big fan of using spaces formally used as churches as folk cafes and pubs in general. I think the time has come for a new religion, Lucy Music, eh? Good on you lads, and as always, Best Wishes and Warmest Regards, Kevin P.S. Hooligans and soccer matches always make for good reading in the States. Lucy, keep it real, over and out.
