The hubbub did settle down a little at this point but people at the tables and the bar did continue to chat away through the songs and some of the chat and you could see Lucy's eyes drawn to the bar quite regularly at this point. Anyway, since I don't record concerts I don't have a set list but it was a pleasure to hear The Tide and Secret Journey from her first album in amongst the more usual songs. This was the first time that I had heard Land Of The Living, which I believe was written after arrived back from the last UK/Ireland tour, and the wait was definitely worth it. Lucy mentioned that she had been on the BBC Radio Ulster George Jones show that afternoon which a few people in the audience had heard. However she was surprised at the audience generally reacting with laughter at this point and when asking what the joke was, she got a few less that complimentary replies about the DJ which surprised her and she admitted that she would not be repeating them to the rest of the audience. Suffice to say that he is not the trendiest or hippest DJ in Northern Ireland but I doubt that he deserved the laughter. Anyway she WAS expecting the audience's laughter when she said that she would be appearing on BBC Radio 4 Woman's Hour on Thursday 3rd October. This still seems to puzzle Lucy although she knows that it is good for a laugh. Perhaps I should say that Radio 4 Woman's Hour conjures up images of 1950's Britain with housewives in pinafores and bouffant hairdos sitting down for nice cup of tea listening to the radio before they get on with the rest of the housework. Those women are long gone but the image remains in the national consciousness. Lucy plugged her new single Guilty As Sin but unfortunately there were no copies for sale. She did tell us the "Asking for Irish Whiskey in a Scottish Pub" story with mine being the only voice to shout out when she asked if anyone knew were Glenfarg was, and naturally the Northern Ireland audience cheered to hear her asking for the Irish whiskey (when the Scottish audience had booed). A few songs later a girl from the audience took her up a whiskey unannounced but gratefully accepted by Lucy who found out that the girl was actually an American and from Nashville. First Riccolas, now free whiskey? I wouldn't normally comment on Lucy's clothes, but there is some relevance for a change. As I said, the room was very hot and Lucy was wearing light blue embroidered jeans and a black short sleeve tee-shirt. Some time into the show she finally admitted that she did not normally wear so little especially short sleeves but as she has been working out recently she now has muscle definition in her arms. She was so proud of this she made a fist and showed off her muscles to a round of applause. There is something for the rest of the UK shows if Lucy asks for requests - ask to see her muscles! She rounded off the main part of the show with Scorpion, always my favourite, followed by the inevitable walk off stage/walk back on stage almost immediately for the encore. Lucy had said earlier that she was happy to take requests although the few requests were for songs she was planning on singing anyway, but one woman's voice from the bar had been quite persistent for Broken Things and we got a great rendition of that one followed by My Name Joe because someone had pointed out that she didn't normally sing that. She finally came off stage at midnight ready to sign anything (although I am sure that she would have preferred it to be an album). Our Lucy virgin Steve was captivated enough to join the queue for an album and an autograph (ahh - another convert) whilst Chris and I headed for the top of the stairs where it was cooler, not so smoky and where we saved the staff the trouble of having to remove the Lucy advertising posters from the walls and got a third one for Steve (which was put up in his house the next day - a true convert!). Lucy was in good form telling the audience that she was pleased not just to be back in Northern Ireland and Belfast but to be back in the Errigle again, where she had been before. Personally I will be looking forward to seeing her in the more salubrious setting of the St Andrews in the Square Church in Glasgow (in the company of the rest of Lucy List Scotland) with a quiet audience, a decent seating layout, a non smoking policy, and hopefully no glasses getting shattered in the middle of Lucy singing Ten Year Night! Jeremy - who is just back from holiday and begs Benay's forgiveness for not being able to get the review to the List earlier! ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Oct 2002 08:18:08 +0000 (GMT) From: jeremy.briggs@baesystems.com Subject: [lucy-list] Review of Lucy in Belfast - 27 September : 1 I tried getting one of the other listers to send this whilst I was on holiday but it has yet to arrive in one of the Digests so I will try again and split it in two this time. Sorry that it is not now arriving in time to give warning of Lucy on BBC Radio 4... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Lucy Played the Jazz Cafi in London on Wednesday 25 October (reviewed by Matt Bloomfield and Louise Doolan), moved to the Pontardawe Arts Centre in Wales on the Thursday night (reviewed by Peter Cox) and then flew to Belfast to play the Errigle Inn on the Friday night. Despite being one of the Scottish Listers, I am originally from Belfast and after seeing Lucy many times in Glasgow, Glenfarg and even once, many years back, in Edinburgh, I had never before had the chance to see her in my native town. Having previously converted Chris (a Dar Williams fan from Northern Ireland) to Lucy, this was a chance to team up with him to see her in Belfast. We encouraged (dragged?) along another old friend, Steve, who had been given copies of Ten Year Night and Every Single Day to listen to earlier in the week (since he is a teacher I was hoping that he was not going to treat listening to the albums too much like having to do homework!). The Errigle Inn is a large pub up the Ormeau Road relatively close to the city centre with a large upstairs venue. Meeting up in the downstairs bar beforehand we chose not to interrupt Lucy as we watched her waiting for a pot of tea to be made behind the bar. A few people did indeed speak to her and someone was with her which made Chris and I realise that we did not actually know what Rick looks like. The gentleman would video her during the concert and sell CDs afterwards, so unless anyone can put us right or point us to a pic of Rick (!), then we remain puzzled on that one. The upstairs opened at 8:30pm and the long, relatively narrow, room had a bar running half the length of one of the long walls, a small stage in the middle at the other side and square tables with chairs arranged in rows at right angles to the stage. This meant that almost half the chairs where pointing away from the stage and others where being blocked by the speakers which where at head height. As we walked in, and before we could even sit down, we were asked for our drinks order by a waitress. This kind of set the tone for the rest of the night. The dark room got busier, smokier, hotter and by 9:30 we finally got some movement as Susan Enan, a local singer, got up on stage with a guitarist friend, as the support. Susan sang for about half an hour, admitting to not having had much rehearsal time, and the audiences reaction tending to be to keep talking and buying drinks both whilst she was playing and trying to tell us a little about the songs. However a small group of, presumably, her friends made sure that the audience did give her a round of applause after each song. She is finishing off her first album and it will be out soon. I will be non-committal about her, she was no Alice Peacock but I have heard many worse opening acts, and I would be happy to listen to her again in a quieter place. But we had come to see and hear Lucy. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Will Lucy make it on stage before midnight? Will we be able to see her through the smoke? Will we be able to hear her over the clink of glasses? All this and more will be revealed next time on... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 Oct 2002 06:31:53 -0400 From: fair325@juno.com Subject: Re: [lucy-list] Review of Lucy in Belfast - 27 September : 1 Thanks for the review mate! It is interesting to realize that the music of Lucy K. is enjoyed and worshipped on foreign soils and distant lands. The pubs in Belfast must be quite the cultural experience. I would think it would be an enormous task to attempt to subdue the typical Irish exuberance and conviviality that occurs in a pub while an artist trying to create music. Jeremy, what would the Scottish be without the Irish? Answer: ENGLISH It's good to hear that Lucy is partaking of the legendary and mythical intoxicating malt beverages that exist in your corner of the world. In any event, Best Wishes and Warmest Regards from cyber space, keep them coming, Kevin. You have not disappointed---keep it up (she says selfishly, wanting to hear yet more). Yes, do please allow Lucy to come home...the U.S. isn't the same without her, although I for one am still managing to hear some live music. Like Aimee Mann on Monday night in New Jersey (the sound wasn't great so it was hard to hear the words, and she can't do an intro, or ANY kind of banter, to save her life, but the woman is still a performer...I can never quite classify her, but a large cross-section of people I know, even on the non-folk circuit, ALSO like Aimee Mann, so she's an interesting phenomenon). And tonight, Ellis Paul and Vance Gilbert will be here in NY (got Ellis's new CD, proudly proclaiming Lucy's and Jennifer Kimball's contributions in the blurb printed prominently on the outside...but I still have not figured out just where their voices appear! Luckily, I like Ellis Paul well enough and I would have ended up buying the CD regardless, but it has no real Lucy content as far as I can tell). Don't know when Woman's Hour is on over there, but wish we could get it over here...I'd love to hear it after all the Lucy mentions of it as the way Bryan Ferry heard her voice before asking her to be on his new album. Off to work and to nurse my hand, which has been painful lately (have been trying, not always successfully, not to type too much...lucky I have no more Lucy shows to review myself quite yet so will not be tempted that way). Thanks for the review, and fear not all you WWW Lucy fans! Just surf along to http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4, and look for the 'Listen Again' link - it brings up an alphabetical list, and under Woman's hour today's programme is there - it's playing on my speakers as I type. I will now take the baton for this weekend , as Liz and I are travelling the almost 400 miles to Bolton for Lucy's second gig in a golf club in West Houghton - sounds unlikely but she's been there before , so anybody else out there in Lucy land going to the show on Sat night ? I know Kay was planning to , but ... do have we any lurkers out there ?? The two Scottish fans would be delighted to meet anyone from the list ... so please send me an e-mail off list if you're going along Anyway , as we see much less of Lucy than the NYC branch , we are also going along to see The Doc in Glasgow on Sunday where we will meet up , again , with Jeremy (The Irishman who now lives in Scoland) and several other friends made at previous Lucy shows and thru the list It's been 9 months since the last visit and I can't wait to hear the new songs We are also taking our friends and their two teenage daughters as potential Lucy converts (got to spread the word folks) along with us to the Glasgow show , and i just know that they are going to love her So look forward (not) to my amatuer review/s when we get back home on Monday Donald ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 03 Oct 2002 23:03:58 -0400 From: "Benay Bubar" Subject: [lucy-list] woman's hour Thanks for those links, Matt. Even though it took me 45 minutes to establish a connection good enough to hear seven minutes of Lucy on Woman's Hour, it was worth it. For those who haven't heard it and are interested, they discussed the ideas behind Written on the Back of His Hand, then Lucy's last appearance on the show and how it led to the Bryan Ferry episode, then Lucy's experiences on 9/11 and how that led to Land of the Living, then Lucy's leaving music for psychology and returning to music...and Lucy sang what seemed like abbreviated versions of Written on the Back of His Hand and Song for Molly. Then---here is the question I have for those who heard the whole Woman's Hour---just as my snippet ended, the interviewer seemed to say something like, "We'd like you to stick around, Lucy, and join in our discussion of air guitar." Did she really say that, or was I hallucinating? Was Lucy involved in anything else on the show? Well, you may have Lucy over there in the UK right now...and you may have bourbon biscuits and people movers and places with lovely exotic names and accents of which I am crushingly envious, but you did NOT get to experience a great event which occurred today only in New York. You may think I am talking about the Ellis Paul/Vance Gilbert show, which was indeed great---the first concert that has ever left me with a headache AND a stomachache, all due to laughing so hard---but in fact I am referring to another momentous event: the debut, at that very show, of my long-awaited black leather jacket! It is finally in my possession, and I must thank again everyone who participated in my poll about whether I should get black or brown. The final decision was correct, and the jacket is all that I dreamed it would be...
