May I also recommend to those of you who don't have Anti-Virus protection installed that you download the free and easy to use AVG from Grisoft http://www.grisoft.com/ They provide free and regular updates (automatic if you wish). It also contains plug-ins for Outlook and Outlook Express that will scan all incoming and outgoing mail and, if you wish, append a message to that effect. http://www.cert.org/homeusers/ira_sysadmin.html Is a good read if you're thinking "why should I". Version: 6.0.391 / Virus Database: 222 - Release Date: 19/09/02 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Sep 2002 21:49:10 +0100 From: "Matt Bloomfield" Subject: [lucy-list] London calling Last night Lucy played the Jazz Cafi in Camden, London, on what I believe was the first stop on her UK tour. 24 hours before, I learned that there was to be a tube strike (London Underground closed due to the (already very well paid) train drivers walking out to demand more money) meaning that going any further than a mainline station in London would be next to impossible without an expensive cab ride, a long walk, or a ride on an ancient London bus. So I decided to drive myself and my brother the 30 odd miles through what I expected would be gridlock. Still, we got there ok, found a parking space - rarer than hens' teeth in London - and walked along to the Jazz Cafi. The door is staffed by big, scary-looking, but polite people who advised that the show wouldnt start until at least 9 o'clock, that there was no support and that once we were in, we couldn't leave. We therefore decided to take our lives in our hands and wander around Camden in the hope of finding some take-away that didn't look like it had been found on the street and re-heated. At night Camden is a dingy, brown/grey, stinky part of London whose night-life is highly thought of (there are some good pubs/clubs in the area). It is a magnet for the young and during the day is, in contrast, a vibrant and colourful part of London with lots of interesting shops, one of which has a giant rocking chair suspended above the door, what for, I know not but it looks great. At night, you negotiate the pushers, vagrants and muggers and try not to look too conspicuous. We walked for about 10 minutes and picked up some food at a garage, nodding politely, but declining the offers of "weed" as we went and decided we might as well go back to the venue anyway, if only to get our drug of choice, beer. Now, the Jazz Cafi didn't have support last time I saw Lucy there and it didn't this time either. But in addition to the tables in front of the stage, they've conveniently added stools to the bar area opposite the stage. Nice one. As it turns out, Lucy did not come on until 9:30 and as we were there at 7:40 we had plenty of time to kill. This was, in fact, a good thing as it meant that despite having to drive there was plenty of time to have a beer and still be sober enough to avoid any pedestrians that couldn't see me hurtling towards them on the sidewalk - nb: I'm trying to speak American as I think we, possibly, understand your vernacular better than you do ours - see the leather pants incident ;). The Jazz Cafi itself is a nice venue with excellent sound and a pretty good view of the stage regardless of where you are, if you don't get there early enough to grab a pillar, a pew or a portion of wall then I would imagine that standing is a bit uncomfortable, the guy in front of us was doing knee bends every couple of songs. I don't think he was dancing. Painted on one of the pillars is "STFU during performances thanx", I leave you to work out what the letters stand for. This was fairly well observed by the downstairs audience, at least from where I was sitting, there were some comments towards the end of the show about the noise in the upstairs restaurant which is above and around the stage, I must admit to not being able to hear it from where I was. Lucy was absolutely brilliant. This was my fourth show, and the second time I've seen her at the Jazz Cafi. It was the best show I've seen her do. She seemed to love it. Fashion wise (see the things I pay attention to for my fellow listers), Lucy looked resplendent in BLJ and what appeared to be purple (it might've been the lights) jeans with a lacy thing which looked glittery too, on one leg. The audience - which seemed, perhaps surprisingly, to be mostly male - was very receptive with some good interaction. A few songs in, a guy from the audience bought her a bourbon - of the liquid, rather than chocolate biscuit kind - which she said does not happen elsewhere. Lucy forgot the words once, maybe twice, but technically, the performance was flawless. As I say, the Jazz Cafi has a great sound system and with Lucy's amazing voice and superb picking it was sonic bliss. I don't keep a set list, the standards were there though: TYN, TTLBO, Scorpion, WOTBOHH, EOTD, Broken Things, the new single, Guilty as Sin and a beautiful rendition of Just You Tonight on the PIANO. I love it when Lucy plays piano, she should do more. Another highlight was a request for The Thief, I've always loved this song and to hear it done live, especially unplanned, was a real treat. Stories were The Bug, Mum, Dad and Mr Mackee (sp?) and I forget the others. Lucy also learned a new term in London. "People Carrier", actually I thought it was an Americanism but obviously not. For those not in the know, it's a bigger than average family car (usually carrying 8-12 people) but doesn't quite make van size and like Lucy said, it's accurate. We got two encores and the applause lasted for ever. It's great to see Lucy so appreciated. I bought a copy of the Greg Brown tribute CD, Going Driftless on which Lucy does Small Dark Movie, not one of my favourites but done brilliantly last night. Lucy signed it as always but I think next time, I'll take a banana. I had the same problem when I was writing about the Peacock Cafe (with an accent) at the Beardsley Zoo. But what a masterful review! Thank you, Matt! I even figured out all the acronyms, Lucy songs and otherwise (TTLBO as Turn the Lights Back On took me longer than it should have...STFU as written on the pillar in the performance space took me a REALLY long time because I am so dense about these things, but thankfully I finally got that too). It was so much fun reading about the show---I do get a vicarious thrill from these things. And Lucy did The Thief...wow...I haven't heard that one live in AGES...hopefully she'll do it again when she gets back to my part of the world too. Plus I've now been introduced to People Carriers and Bourbon Biscuits...two things I'd NEVER heard of. Glad you provided the links! Bourbon Biscuits sound sort of like Oreos...not in terms of shape or flavor, but definitely in terms of methods of consumption! I'll have to keep an eye out for them next time I'm in a grocery with an import aisle (which won't be near where I live...grocery stores in NYC almost seem to pride themselves on a lack of DOMESTIC selection, never mind foreign items!). I was right that the UK reviewers wouldn't disappoint! Please keep up the reviews, those who are able...it's a treat to get to follow Lucy's UK tour, albeit from a distance.
