I've been to hundreds of live shows, but this one is way, way up there on the list. And I had a chance to connect with Lucy after the show. This was only the second time I'd seen Lucy. I drove the 3 plus hours from Omaha for the show. Thanks to the great Iowa fast food work slowdown, I arrived at the show just minutes before the 8 p.m. starting time. Luckily, I found a seat to the side of the stage, 2nd row, with a great view of the mike. The room was small, holding about 200 or so, but packed with loyal Lucy fans. Greg Klyma was the opener, and he was an energetic and extremely eccentive performer. Lots of stomping, crouching and staring down audience members. Just before 9 p.m. Our Girl took the stage. Looking radiant, she started with Small Dark Movie. And the top of her guitar blocked my view, but luckily not for long. By the third song, I had a lump in my throat that stayed there the whole night. Great songs and great singing that invades your very soul. O . . .M . . G. Folks, I'm not a set list guy--I find it distracts from my enjoyment of the show. Suffice to say that it was one long set similar to those listed here from recent shows. Rarities included "Secret Journey", then "My Name Joe" for an encore. Other than those, you have the usual suspects. The new songs are outstanding, and I can't wait to hear them on CD. I waited expectantly for Just You Tonight, which always grabs me way down deep. Sure enough, it did just that--although to my untrained ear, the piano sounded a little sharp, which was distracting. Lucy was in fine form. Her voice strained just a little to reach the high notes on a couple of songs. Overall, though, she was energetic and engaging through out. (And--bug story, irish whiskey story, parents mating ritual "Beautiful Mind"-related story.) And I noticed something new this time. Maybe it has to do with how close I was to the stage. But in the past, Lucy has always seemed a bit shy. Last night, however, she was, well, seductive (very), whispering lines like "I sting you with a kiss", and other intimate lines. It was like she was feeling very comfortable with that side of herself. Has anybody else noticed this, or am I all wet? Even though I had a three hour drive and work in the morning, I stayed for the meet and greet, and boy, I'm glad I did. As I usually do, I hung out until I could get dead last in the line so I could have some extra time with her. OK, I'm a nerd, but I wrote some notes so I wouldn't forget what I wanted to say. When my turn came, I told Lucy how much I loved the show. OK, first item checked off. Then I told her that I had once stayed at the Bien Inn in Scotland, the small inn where the Irish whiskey and leather pants incidents took place. She was shocked, not only that I'd been there, but that I knew that she'd been there. Score one for those of you who gave me that info. I had her sign a couple of CDs for dear friends, then when she signed mine (BTW, my name is Rick), she commented that was her husband's name, and seemed surprised that I already knew that! Geez, doesn't she know we do our research? Then came a great moment, which I have to be a bit mysterious about, so I hope you'll forgive me. The point is that I felt a real connection with Lucy. I'd asked her about some lyrics in one of her songs. She gave me the standard songwriter answer ("It means what it means to you"). But when I told her what I thought it was about, and how it resonated with me, she told me that, yes, it was about exactly what I thought it was, and told something very personal about where she was in her life. It was a peak moment for me. And I gave her an antique glass bottle which had "Kaplansky and Moran Drug Store" molded into the glass. I'd found it on eBay (amazing what ya find if ya type in 'Kaplansky'.), and she seemed to really appreciate it. I drove home blasting all the CDs on the way--and so intent was I that I didn't realize I was nearly out of gas until the very last moment (Distance till Empty Indicator = 0), when at 2 am I miraculously found a pay at the pump station in the Iowa hinterlands. Does anybody know how to reach Lucy via email? I'd love to follow up on something with her. If you do, please email me offlist. Folks, this one was a real keeper. I'll remember this night for a long time. Rick V.
