Well, the animal ITSELF may not be related to Lucy, but when you get a group of them...I think it might just have to be "a chorus of kaplanskies." Benay alliterating again with different initial consonants...yes, it's quite possible, and isn't it great?...unfortunately, the editors of my college newspaper weren't quite as enthused about alliteration, and at a certain point I think they stopped letting me write headlines ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2002 08:05:43 -0400 From: Jeff Bernstein Subject: Re: [lucy-list] the zoo...and kaplanskies (lower case) Benay Bubar wrote: > ...a kaplansky, I have decided (and this is NOT an "if Lucy were > an animal, what animal would she be?" sort of thing, because I can't answer > it for myself and I sure wouldn't presume to answer it for Lucy...this is > just what I think of when I envision an animal called a kaplansky), should > be somewhat larger than a gerbil but smaller than a cat. ObLucy note: A dear music-loving friend of mine just had a baby girl a few weeks ago, so I assembled a tape of lullabyes for her. The babe's favorite? Why, Lucy's "Goodnight", which after one or two plays puts her right into deep dreamland. No doubt this is what you are all sighing...but I had to poke my head up one more time today to let those of you who have been following the exciting saga of the Work Fortnight from Hell know that it is winding down. We actually shipped out the big holiday issue project I've been slaving over for a month and a half. Tomorrow (Friday) will be devoted to random post-shipping crisis management...still stressful, but hopefully not oh-no-I-have-to-finish-this-or-else stressful. And then my work life goes back to ordinary chaos...about which, trust me, I will still be quite capable of complaining, but which shouldn't be as STEADILY draining as these few weeks have been. So thanks are due to all of you who have, both virtually and not so virtually, supported me through the work craziness...and to those of you who have merely endured its byproducts in the form of my postings to the list! One more thing...in celebration of basically finishing The Project, I went tonight to a women's basketball game, as I am now an avid women's basketball fan. Before this affects your entire image of me in any way, know that my career as a sports fan, in its entirety, has involved: 1) Attending the 2001 Super Bowl. (In case anybody missed this, I randomly won an all-expenses-paid trip to the Super Bowl last January...no joke. People do win those weird sweepstakes you figure nobody ever really wins; I'm living proof. My winning the trip, and GOING, caused great consternation amongst my friends who a) actually understood football, and b) actually cared about it. I tried to give myself a crash course in the game before flying to Orlando, but all I ended up figuring out was that I should be happy when the ball---which I could almost NEVER actually see---presumably went one way, and less happy when it went the other way, and that there was a lot of running and tackling and flailing in the course of getting the ball to go in one of the two directions. And New York, my team, was trounced. But it was a great trip anyway...the hotel had palm trees and a pool, and they sent us to Disney World...so I can't complain!) 2) Attending two women's basketball games, tonight's being the second. The reasons I am now an avid women's basketball fan are that I realized I can see the ball most of the time, and I actually mostly know what's going on and can pretend about the part I don't know, and it makes way more sense than football...and way, WAY more sense than the "basketball" I was forced to endure "playing" in high school gym class (a sea of flailing limbs, as I recall, except everyone else's limbs seemed to be flailing with purpose, while mine were merely flailing). But here's the problem: tonight "my" women's basketball team...the New York Liberty, who are the Eastern Conference Champions (I learned this tonight...not sure quite what they had to do to get that designation, but it sure sounds good), LOST. Just as they did the first time I saw them, a couple of weeks ago. And for a little while I was actually worried...ALL my experiences as a sports fan have involved my team's losing. This does not bode well for my career as a sports fan. As far as the basketball team went, having been to TWO losing games, II was feeling a little responsible, a little guilty... And then I took a good hard look at the Liberty's mascot. It's a big, lumbering yellow doglike creature named Maddie. And at that moment I knew. It wasn't me---it was Maddie. Nothing personal against Maddie, but I'll put it this way: I just KNEW that had the mascot been not a DOG dancing around Madison Square Garden, but a nice, furrily enthusiastic kaplansky (lower case), New York would have won. Enough said.
